Thats unbelievable. There are some things the umpire cant see in one fast viewing so getting on the umpires back isnt always the way.For me it`s shame on Greg Dyer for this one.
The umpire should have clicked that Dyer went for the ball with his left hand but ulimately held it up with his right hand. Why would the keeper swap the ball unless it had hit the turf? Seems McDermott was onto it which is why he hesitated mid appeal.
hahahah I was there when Wright made 99 and Crowe made 50something yep Hadlee had too get Whitney out in the last over but failed from memory there was a lbw that went against the Kiwi Danny Moorrison
dodgiest ever piece of work behind the stumps, but true, sacking him was a bit harsh...ironic how he recently got voted head of the Australian Cricketers Association :P
the dyer catch didnt cost nz the match, umpire dick french did when he turned down a plum lbw danny morrison against mcdermot that was the cheating part of that test we would have won
It's a bit of a furphy that Dyer was sacked over this incident. Dyer stayed the Australian keeper for the remainder of the 1987-88 season, which included 2 more Tests and about 10 ODIs. At the end of the summer, the selectors decided that Dyer wasn't the keeper they wanted long-term and they punted on Healy for the 1988 Pakistan tour. The story about Dyer being sacked for this incident was created a few years later, although, obviously this incident wouldn't have helped his cause.
@inxia38 Yes but some people just believe anything! Most people i speak too say with 1000% confidence that Dyer was told he was sacked at the tea break! Idiots, it was only December 87, had more tests and the whole World Series to play yet!
Sacked to this?.I can't remember how many times Healy stumped to claim bowled(brain Mcmillan was one).Hadding also done that.May be Gilly is the most sincere WK AUS ever had at least post war.
what was the importance of this decision, did it affect the game? oh and I'm only 16 so i don't know the controversy surrounding this which is a surprise coz i have followed nearly all of the tests and world series matches with australia involved during the 70s-2000s
Its interesting to imagine the different outcomes of many matches if the DRS system had been around a lot longer..,.

@bavarebava So all Aussies are cheaters? Full stop, end of story? Based on this logic all Kiwis have little brother syndrome.

@south6bt For all your shouting.....it's still cheating. Wear it.
ragers66 5 days ago
how is it australian cheating? it would just be the keeper not all of the aussie team, and it was also the umpire that called it.
shabbyroadgaming23 1 month ago
That so hit the ground, even a blind man can SEE that.
loveenglandcricket 2 months ago
@loveenglandcricket Aside from the 2 blind men on the field called the umpires, lol.

what a cheat
KhurshidMJ 3 months ago
i guess incidents like these will always happen. kids always do it . and players cheat at first class level too.
i suppose just the few who get international level make it a point to be careful.
also, i sometimes wonder if players are 100% aware of the ball and everything arnd them in general whn theyre diving and tumbling like tht.

How can really one do this? I have really admired the Aussie team for their fighting spirit but why do they cheat ?
gokulsreeragam 5 months ago
@gokulsreeragam I think you'll find cases of players wrongly claiming catches in most international teams, if not all
trex0021 4 months ago
Once Inzimam claimed a dropped catch against India. And he got it too. Don't remember which match that was.

Anyone remember Saleem Yousuf? He bounced the ball like a basketball and still tried to claim a catch.
MrCains820 5 months ago
I didnt see any cheating, he was simply bouncing the ball on the ground in jubilation, happy about his catch!

Still too harsh on him( to be sacked)...I mean everyone from Healys to Latiffs have claimed a dropped catch. feel sorry for this chap.

True, and you feel pretty shitty about it afterwards - er, not that I've ever cheated or anything...
ludocrat 5 months ago
Did the square leg umpire give that out on his own or did he ask the keeper's woed for that? Not conclusive from this.
Because the keeper looks confused at first, in a sort of 'I am not sure' mode.
Either way, any WK/catcher would know it when he has grounded something in that manner. So, yeah he was dishonest there.

Been a few unsportsman like moments from Aussie against NZ, although the same could be said in reverse? Bit of trans Tasman rivalry ae??

Crazy stuff. Thank god for the tech we've got these days.
And a request, have you got Ian Healy's "stumping" of Brian Lara (think it was at the Gabba, 1993?)
