This was on the radio yesterday while i was driving to a friend's house. It's a good thing i didn't pay attention to the lyrics. Like crustyclown said, what great encouragement.
this song reminds me of my little girl i had lost August 14/1998 full term baby 9months n thats what god did took my little girl...:( i still miss her today , :(
got a bass for christmas. the bassline for this song was the first thing i learned on it, it's also the first song my mom learned all the words too. i love this song
@xxxPurplexGirlxxx same what @Desi5218 said, you can't really beat the original, especially an oldie, besides i have never really cared for pearl jam's voice, just sounds really annoying
My sister made up her own lyrics for this when we were teenagers. Up in the road straight ahead, Was a little old lady, we killed her dead, I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right, Never forget the sound that night -- The cryin' tires, the bustin' glass, The painful screams when I broke my ass. Oh, where oh where, can my baby be, I saw her leg over by a tree; Her butt was caught in the back seat door, And her kidneys were laid out all over the floor.

Originals, are always better! A replacement is exactly what it is, a remake is exactly what it is...likewise, a cover is just a cover...Never the original! No matter how many times it was done...
How about you guys just plain enjoy the song without messing our minds up with whose to blame and what not? Great singing, beautiful melody and a reminder of the fantastic song era of the '60s.
@CrustyClown11 My drivers end instructor actually played this song for the entire class, and told us this is what would happen if we didn't drive safely. lmao
I love this song. I love the original and I love Pearl Jam. But I think this song is just too fast in both versions. It could be a very haunting type of song, but the fast pace just kills it. And whoever that is talking about who's to blame for the accident etc, get a grip on reality already.
@TheRimDoctor the man clearly states he couldn't stop so he swerved to the right. So I was just rhetorically asking what if had he swerved to the left?
@TheRimDoctor oh no problem. It's all good. Actually I'm a fan of the oldies because namely songs like this do trigger a lot of emotions because this actually has probably happened to people. I've also been watching literal music videos lately. Frankly I miss those days and wish all these artists would live on forever. Kind of hard to see aging band members passing away right before your eyes but this is just a fact of life. So have long lives and some don't. Hats of to JFW and the Cavs.
@cornhuskers321 I never would have thought that. Glad you are familiar with the details. Haven't read the police report. I stand corrected. Though when he swerved to the right I was hoping he would've hit a pedestrian that goes by the name of E. Vedder but the song made no mention of a pedestrian or driver of the other vehicle being hit that night. Only other conclusion I can come to is driving too fast for conditions. I guess for its time this song alone was a smash hit.
@cornhuskers321 there in the road straight ahead signifies a straight away. You mean to tell me the driver of his daddy's car was a terrible driver and didn't learn to scan ahead. Should have he had his headlights on and again on a straight away if one can't see a car dead ahead and stopped then perhaps one should be found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for killing his date. Geez and don't get me started on the insurance claims and wrongful death suit. I can see the girl's family sueing,
@cornhuskers321 and c'mon killing your date and crashing your daddy's car are serious failures and no way to get laid. Now was the car maintained? Should we overlook the driver being at fault and accusing the owner of the car namely the father for not getting a brake check done. Had the car had a proper safety inspection then perhaps everything was preventable. I'll go with lack of car maintenance or careless driving and driving to fast for conditions as the causes of the accident.
i always liked this song. i started liking oldies at age 14. i'm 30 now. when i discovered that j. frank wilson was from lufkin, only 1 hour from where i live, i couldn't believe that a small piece of rock and roll history came from a place so close. then at age 18, i was lucky enough to meet a lady that went to school with j. frank. although she didn't know much about him
@yankees704 I remember reading in the insert to an album that the backup singers for this song were actually untrained and not particularly skilled, hence the breaking voices.
J. Frank was born and raised in Lufkin, Texas which is also my hometown. I enjoyed this song in my teen years also. I am a little younger than J. Frank, and was working in the hospital he was admitted to when he died. It was a sad moment. Like jpnagle59 said... J. Frank never made a dime off of this song. It was the bad business manager that put him into the depression that lead to his alcoholism and eventually his death October 4, 1991.
While I admit to preferring the Pearl Jam version (I heard it first, grew up with it... makes this one seem almost happy :P ) this one has a sense of creepy death. Sad. But somehow happy.
im 11 and i LOVE oldies.. it puts me and my dad to sleep every night every night. He used to sing this to me and my older sister every night so we would go to sleep faster. I always loved oldies and I always will.

@nickshelton1978 That's what I always heard and read too, but Wiki now says the song was first recorded in 1961, which was the year before the Barnesville wreck. That wreck happened during Christmas holidays of 1962 so there is a problem with chronology. (I've read the news story from the Atlanta Journal newspaper microfilm that covered the Barnesville accident. It was actually a double date and the driver slammed into the back of a semi stopped to make a left turn.)
@nickshelton1978 The sad thing is that according to wiki, there was a gas station attendent work that night, that didn't realise that one of the bodies he pulled from the wreckage was his own daughter.
Such a good song. Rarely see this much real emotion and love put into a song. They just don't make song like this anymore, and it really just a shame to think that fewer and fewer young people are discovering beautiful music like this.
You are so right. There are so many great oldies and the kids nowadays have no idea what good music is. Most of today singers can't sing a note and even then you can't understand any of their lyrics. As long as the base is blasting then they think it's good music.
As a man, I cant even listen to this song. I can't have this playing, then one day this might happen. Great song though, heard the original and pearl jam cover many times. It just strikes my soul too hard.
@RelaxKickback Yeah I agree. Something about the song (this version) is very haunting. I first heard it when I was about 8 and it put a lump in my throat, and it still does at age 53. The PJ cover ain't bad, but this one is the one that hits hard. It really paints a picture.
I remember hearing this song when I was in High School, ( yeah I know, I'm telling my age, but I don't care, I'm as old as the Good Lord wants me to be.)
I applaud Pearl Jam for doing a classic 60`s "teen" hit, so as to expose more of today`s youth to the great music of yesterday. But it is clear that the original from J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers was the better version!
@thebigfist: Define better and better to whom. Pearl Jam's version elicits stronger emotions from me when I listen to it and they keep the classical feel. While I like the original by JFW and the Cavaliers, I don't feel any connections to the singer, nor do I feel like he lost anyone, particularly @0:53 when the inflection is more towards presenting the lyrics in the song rather than the emotions in the song.
I remember hearing Pearl Jam's version of this song when I was around 15 or 16... and being completely appalled, because they had managed to ruin one of my favourite songs that my nana used to play me from her cassette tapes. While Pearl Jam do have some good songs, they should have stayed away from this one - the vocalist simply makes it sound whiny and not at all sad or beautiful as intended. Boo you, Pearl Jam, and boo to everyone who loves the PJ version just because it's all they know.
@graciebullie I agree, i hate when bands ruin good songs and then they become the only versions you can find, like this, or if you've heard Guns n Roses version of Live and Let Die, it's butchered and everybody loves it
@graciebullie This version is great....but I don't think Pearl Jam didn't anything wrong with it. They brought a great oldies tune and allowed it to live on. Same thing goes for Working Class Hero and Green Day.
@graciebullie Pearl Jam version is great, and if everyone should stay away from this song then he should too, because the original belongs to Wayne Cochran.
LAST KISS: was Originally done by "J. Frank Wilson and The Cavaliers". It was first released on Le Cam Records, later, on Tamara Records. Finally, It was released in June of 1964 on Josie Records.
