They had to make covers to protect the strings from their abnormally large penises. Then they realised they couldn't play with a cover on so they gave it keys.

The nyckelharpa (key fiddle) is a traditional folk instrument in Sweden (and possibly in Norway and Denmark as well?), dating back to the 16th century if I'm not mistaken. It's one of the few original folk instruments we have here, although the chromatic version seen here is a relative "modern" invention.

And yeah, I agree: great playing!

it's a relative of the hurdy-gurdy, but the substitution of a bow instead of a wheel makes it sound much better, and gives it a much greater range of expression.

I'd call it a rough cross between the hardanger fiddle and hurdy-gurdy
