Jojo Mayer did this same type of groove on his DVD. Where did you learn this groove originally and where did those ideas come from?

  • You're so relaxed and still fast!

  • man you can play

    play really well

  • I would really much like to see you do a tutorial on the stuff you play on the snare while playing your regular swing say around 3,58. The elvin jones /brian blade fills.

something 3 over 4 mixed with a bassdrum?

Your lesson is very well explained.

    Thanks for doing this.

  • Sound great man!

  • Hey Tim!

I love your lesson! Do you have a DVD for sale on jazz drumming? Or know any good "how to play jazz drums" DVD's on the market?

I've been playing drums about 5 years and want to get into jazz drumming. Your lessons have been quite helpful in my endeavor!

  • this isn't metal drumming dude......

  • great playing.

  • great teaching skills... just awesome...

  • you do the most amazing playing I've seen on this size kit

  • are you crazy?

lol this guys pretty good yeah, but this is a common sized kit for bebop swingers. its like saying hes the best jazz drummer ever.

  • grooove¡¡¡

  • Man, you've got especially good hands. Where did you study?

  • Nice playing. What kit is that? A Gretch Catalina Club Jazz?

  • its the 125th annaversary kit you gimp

  • sweet!

  • Thanks, I learned a lot and I can finally keep up with my teacher when he teaches jazz. And I was never able to learn the snare pattern for the bossa nova before watching your video. Great job, keep uploading.

  • seems like you need a new teacher...

  • Your an amazing teacher. Thank you so much!

  • Bravo

  • how about spang spang spang a lang spang or ding ding dingading ding its all in the phrasing

  • Great lesson!

  • Awesome. Metric modulation, made easy. Thanks.

  • Very nice playing! Entertaining and informative clips, thank you :)

And I like your sound, are you planning on making a video about your drums, heads, tuning?

  • that was awesome

  • mmmmmm spine shivering:)

    thanks man

  • Wow you're really good. And I say that coming straight from a Tony Williams video -- which'll make anything sound like crap! What brand are your drums and did you learn to tune at an online site? If so...please link! Thanks!

  • Great videos! I've been playing drums for about 25 years, mainly in local rock bands, but never developed the bounce technique for playing very fast. I can fake it but it is not very much fun and is tiring to the hand. Can you post a video that shows how to use the technique for rebounding the sticks against the skins to get that nice even roll? Or how to do rolls like the double stroke at faster speeds? Especially with the left hand. Thanks!!

  • Happened by your videos while checking out some old Tony Williams clips. Man, you really made me want to play jazz, awesome videos. You probably already answered this question several times, but what snare are you using? It sounds fantastic.

Thanks for the great clips, keep 'em coming.

  • Thanks for the kind words! The snare is a gretsch usa custom 5X14. Hope this helps.

    Tim

  • Those artisans are off the hook man; I almost want to sell my cons...

  • One little point. The samba is traditionally played with a very subtle feel. Meaning, the sticking is to be very soft, not overtly loud and bombastic. Other than that, good job man.

  • Samba isn't TRADITIONALLY played on a freaking drumset. This guy is a kickass drummer.....he's got great control over his dynamics. Samba means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Saying samba is supposed to be soft is a pretty amateur thing to say....especially to a drummer of this caliber. Trad. samba is often a bit mellow, but this guy is doing it in a jazz/fusion/bop context which means he's doing what he wants.

    Nice try though.

  • Great job! dude. Hugs from Brazil!

  • Awesome!!! Your drums sound great.

  • Great idea. I can't wait to try it.
