smith is good when you don't have a spotter. I always keep in mind that the bar on this machine is only 15lbs so I always add extra weight to compensate for that to get as close to the more natural free weight lift. Nothing can replace free weights but smith machines are good too when you want to max to failure on your own with no spotter. IMO. Good lift though. Keep banging away!

locking out by going all the way up takes stress OFF the chest and places it squarely in the shoulders and triceps. His form is 100% perfect for solid chest building.

Bench press is more difficult because it takes place in two planes of motion whereas the smith press is locked in the horizontal plane and only takes place vertically.
Studies show that most lifters can lift about 15% more on a free bench than on a Smith machine. So even though more stabilization muscle is needed for a free bench, the result lifted is higher. As such, I'm not sure I would call a free bench more "difficult."
Squat is the opposite, where the result is usually better on a Smith.
