here in the philippines we put smaller holes at the breech of the bamboo cannon to produce louder bang..due to loud impact of the explosion..sometimes the cannon breaks in half

We used to make these when we were kids in the Philippines. Green bamboo, tilted so the kerosene would pools under the lighting hole and let it rip. What you are lighting is the fumes from the kerosene, especially after it was heated up a little bit. Once the constant firing weakened the bamboo, though, look out. It would eventually fly apart spraying burning bamboo and kerosene around. But for a few hours, it was good fun.

Sadly these days the aspect of learning the control of fire is being lost on the new generations of kids as they prefer to play on computers or inside, the real adventure is always outdoors.

i can also give instructions on how to make and use it. But always make sure to use either diesel or kerosene, never use gasoline or the bamboo can blow up. i have gotten my eyebrows burnt off a couple times from doing this. The bamboo gun appears to work from the building up and then spontaneous combustion of gases on the inside of the barrel - creating a "vacuum gun" effect - anyone who has played Halo and driven the warthog will see a similar principle in use! I was working in Fiji and heard this device one day, at first I thought it was a car backfiring, the kids were so eager to have a video made of their gun.

It reminds me of a pulse jet without the petal valve, it really is pretty dangerous but its a different world there, this video was shot about three years ago.

Hopefully someone will know the origions of this device, I was told it was devised when the Fiji people saw English cannons, and this was their response..I am open to any other suggestion of why it exists.
