  • "it killed him dead"

  • I render fat without water, seems to yield 100x more tallow? Whats the purpose of the water?

  • Hey Dave, any reason you couldn't use bankline instead of uphoulstery thread for this project?

  • raccoons make a gr8 dressin. if the glands are all removed. they taste like metal otherwise.

  • you have the life i want my friend

  • Somehow I missed this video when it was first uploaded. I'm glad I finally ran into it. I do wonder how many times Dave has used that shirt in the past 2 years?

  • Hey Dave another cool video man and let me know if your coming to Arizona It would be cool to go hunt some predators with some of my big Guns

  • What seasoning did you use on the deer meat?

  • i really enjoy all of your videos i get alot of good info im gonna try some of your methads i have been working on a kit for the last 4 years and your videos have gave me good ideas so thank you

  • Great video. Your info and instruction is always legit. What is the difference between lard and tallow? If you rendered the fat from the raccoon could you use it for food like lard? I have rendered lard before and it seems like the same process...

  • hey aren't u on that tv show dual surivial?

  • Looks like you're 2/3 of the way to some pemmican. Make some jerky with that venison, gather some berries, and you're golden. Raccoon tallow makes the BEST pemmican!

  • damn thats a big coon dave, must of baited that trap with a lot of fried chicken lol

  • personally with the shirt, if i made one id have to make like a tunic type hood that drapes over the shoulders and back. while i was watching it looked like something robinhood mightve worn. so i was thinking of those monk outfits, and they looked pretty warm. just some random thoughts on the subject

  • can the tallow be used as a lip balm?

  • @YourNameHere693 Yup, sure can, it's used in many lipo balms.

  • Reminds me of Robin Hood =) btw, when u trap an animal like that & its been dead for ?? however many hrs..you said u were "processing it"..does that mean ur gonna eat it?? aackk! I thought u cant eat meat after its been dead awhile..thought u had to process it for eating right away. I just caught this video so not sure what u mean by processing it.

  • @kokonutbaby1 he means he is going to eat it and its fine because it was in the cold water and processing it means skining and gutting.

  • @timehero9 No way would I eat something that was not a fresh kill & drained of its blood..whether it was in cold water or in a fridge it still laid there bloating and growing slimy for Lord knows how long..ewww!

  • @kokonutbaby1 Ummm, I hate to spoil your party chick, but if it's cold, in a fridge or water (actually that water is way colder than ANY fridge) it WILL NOT bloat!! To bloat it has to start rotting, and it takes anywhere from a few hours in hot weather to weeks, or months, in really cold weather. I would also bleed it, personally, because of my religous convictions, but that coon is totally fresher than what YOU had for dinner last night-guaranteed!

  • looks like yoda

  • @natureman97 It looks similar to a capote (French trapper coat) without the hood. I've hunted all my life, WOOL is the only way to go. I own quite a bit of Filson and Pendleton wool myself.

  • May the force be with you ^^

  • Super Practical!! Love it :D

  • can you use the fat to make glue?

  • What's wrong with this video, (all the stopping and starting??

  • Dave: Great job on this! Finally someone, i.e. you shows the real deal on Survival skills with an emphasis on hunting and trapping. Everyone else seems to mention these skills, but you are actually living it and showing it. That's a big difference as the amount of detail you show makes all the difference. Keep going, your doing great!

  • Is that the best way to get the tallow?

  • yeah don't take offense, but when i saw you wearing that shirt , all you needed was a light saber ;) very cool :) hahahaha

  • see am planning on making one of those shirts, and for my closure for my collar i'm gonna make some buttons from elk antler i have. it would look cool and still be effective.

  • You think that tallow would start to stink after awhile on your boots or screw up your scent profile.

  • this other dude, his friend, made a 2 seamed on and the shoulder is seamless so it's not as messy or uncomfortable. but this is practical too.

  • now that is how a man sews, sitting in the dirt with deer roast on the fire lol. All you needed was a beer

  • Are those reading glasses? He IS human....

  • Hey, you look like a monk mithe theese big sleeves. =)

  • How about a video on some pants to go with that shirt?

  • this summer I was with my grandma learning basic sewing, my father thought I`m going gay. Actually I learned how to transfer measurements to sheet.

  • Will make one with a hood on. Sleeves: when arm down, to cover fist form. Option with rolling sleeve up+button to shorten it up when warm or busy hands. Attach a hard leather piece on back (to sit on). Front "skirt" can be double longer with "V" on both sides, and whole jacket should be overlaping style like suite. Belt make from same material with sticky tape insted of tying. Thank you for reading my ideas, but Dave, THANK YOU FOR TEACHING US

  • I had the same thing. LOL

  • I just bought 2 Italian wool blankets, and they reek of mothballs, so I'm hanging them up outside. Any suggestions on cleaning these blankets in the future?

  • wash them.

wool is supposed to be dry cleaned but a military blanket isnt gunna get hurt in the washer and dryer.

i wash my wool uniform jacket and pants and all my wool blankets when they get too dirty.

it tends to soften up the really scratchy blankets too.

  • are ur blankets 100% wool? i was looking an saw it 70 30 wool poly so...

  • my blankets are 100% im pretty sure, but my confederate uniform is 100% wool from woolrich. either way both blankets and my uniform were rough and scratchy when new and through a little washing and use they softened up.

after years of use i havent seen any bad effects from washing them occasionaly.

  • run them in a laundery dryer with 2-3 dryer sheets for an hour. then hang up outside for 2-3 days.

  • ✩✩✩✩✩ Dave!

  • Could u show how to make pemmican out of a kill please.

some people claim its the best food ever,

others say its like dog food.

Is it supposed to be like jerky or Confit ?

  • ✩✩✩✩✩ !! I can only imagine what Thanksgiving is like at your house! Damn now I'm hungry for some deer! Happy Thanksgiving Dave to you and yours!

  • Where are the glands on the coon???

  • Raccoons should have all the fat, inside and out, removed, as well as the glands that are under the legs, along the spine, and in the small of the back. The meat is very dark, long-fibered, and somewhat coarse; it is improved by an hour's parboiling

  • Firstly thank-you for making these vids, I love this wilderness stuff. If the animal for example the raccoon that you trapped, how would you know if it was sick with rabies? Would it be safe to eat? Would all types of pigeon & squirrels make a good meal?

    thanks

  • @wildernessoutfitters look like robin hood

  • @wildernessoutfitters can you use ground hog fat to.

  • If you have some more of that fabric you could add a short cape onto the shirt as they did in the 18th century. Just some added warmth for those cold days while out hunting. Docprovost

  • Yes, Master Kenobi.

  • Perhaps the rest of that tallow could be used for pemmican.

  • excellent video, packed w/ great info- and the venison probably tasted fabulous :)

  • It's ROBIN HOOD!!!

  • woohoo coon :D

  • Nice Video Dave

  • u r good man very good for one more time.... 5/5

  • lol your outfit looks like a Jedi outfit

  • @TheGods1marine That was my thought too. But he gets props. He can sew WAY better than I can.

  • @TheGods1marine He's Dave BushWalker, I bet if he wanted to he could make a Light Saber out of a Hickory stick and a Firefly LOL

  • 4. You said you take a garbage bag as water protection. Did you also cut it into a coat? or in case of rain just throw it over you?

    5. When starting your trip how much water do you advise to carry? just enough to fill up out canteen? and how much should i be drinking in a self reliance situation?

sry for my bad english - im german

this deer meat looked wicked jummy and your son got a coll tatoo.

  • mabey you should visit his forum..you can learn more details there, in a question/ answer format

  • Hey Dave,

    1. Awsome Job on all your vids, so far the "rabbit stick" was my favorite one ;) followed by the spider shelter series then the commons man kit!

    2. When u made ur Wool-Balnket / Coat and you carry it as a bedroll, would you take a coat or so on you? if you get cold, but want to continue to move, you couldn't take the bedroll apart..?

    3. I remeber a vid of you where u had a pack with a US sleeping bag inside. i have a sleeping bag, so take it? or go light with the bedroll?

    thank you !

    !

  • Many Thx Dave!!

  • Thank You... Nice video on the hunting shirt... - Andy

  • Dave, thanks for showing the completion of the shirt.

  • damn fine vid. id heard you could make animal fat lamps never seen it done though thanks dave.

  • Hey say you have more meat than you need, and its pretty warm weather. To save the rest of the meat for future use, is it better to keep it raw or cook it and store it? And how long can meat be good for, until its useless in warmer weather?

  • you can smoke the meat and make jerky which will keep for a long time, there are several videos on youtube about it.

  • Hey thanx!

  • Thanks Dave..really appreciate the wealth of info in this vid,,a functional garment and a grease lamp ..thanks for sharing..also great to see a good dad/son time in the woods..damn that deer meat sounded tasty.

  • I like the wool shirt. I made one last winter from an old blanket. My design used a lot less stiching. I'll make a video and upload it for you to see. Might give you some ideas for the next one.

  • Sean, would luv to see ur version of this shirt. Haven't seen many vids from u lately.

  • I've been really busy. I am struggling to find time to get out to the woods for myself. New videos and projects on the way. Thanks

  • I like the wool blanket coat. This is what I was talking about. with some good trim on the edges it should serve you a long time. Making it decorative will make it an enjoyable memory. I'd suggest some buckskin leather trim on the edges.

  • would be nice to see a hood on that shirt?

  • Thanks Dave!

  • During WWI, The first "ghillie suits" were made from burlap in similiar fashion. Just in case someone wants to know.

  • @scottpd1404

Ghillie suits were around long before the first world war, the Lovat Scouts were the first military unit to use Ghillies that had been recruited from Scottish estates as snipers in 1916. And as such the first military unit in history to make use of the Ghillie Suit. And burlap was American, and they didn't enter the war till 1917.

  • ratcoon is dead he's no more....

  • Dave, to go withthe whole outdoor theme if you let the tallow stand in a separate container, and took off the top part after it cooled, then added it to a pan w/ beeswax, you would be able to make dipped candles. I know it would have to be done at night around a fire or woodstove, but the hunting shirt is the same process in a way. Processing lye from wood ashes, adding tallow, oatmeal, honey, yucca, and any flower will produce soap that is made the same as Bath&Body works!

  • If that candle was in my shelter burning, what is it gonna smell like? I guess I need to go catch a coon tomorrow.

  • nice shirt i have a army blanket i was issued with in 1976 will convert that i think......as for the raccoon lamp good one . though in the UK we have no wild 'coon, so no tallow lamp but no doubt something will turn up lol

  • great job dave!!..plus the inside of the tied hunting shirt can serve as a pocket..i did 1750's renacting as well..glad to see those old skills being passed on to a new generation....hey dave!! how bout showing a tump line or make a sling for the shotgun..a sort of modern trade gun!!

  • Just an idea...you should snag another one of those dog bowls and carry two. You can use one as a lid if you need to...just flip it over and put it on top the other one.

  • great idea, plus the bowls would nest in each other so it wouldn't really take up any extra room, just slightly more weight :D

  • I love it!!

coon fat to tallow, I wanted to know how make that and make a old fashion tallow lamp.

will that work with any fat, or just certain fat(s)?

    thank you very much.

  • badphobar:

    works with any animal fat

  • I want some venison!

  • dave what about the coon do u now of any ways to cook it ?? i would think it would be good meat right??

  • Coon Bacon! -- Great video!!!

  • Dave thanks as always for the great info. Where are the glands located on the coon that need to be removed to make the meat eatable?

    Mark

  • Ya I like the wool shirt.

I remember the kid who died in The Outlaw Josey Wales talking about his paw making a linsywoolsy shirt for him. I always wondered why that was such a big deal. Now I know.

    That was really interesting.

  • i heard WD-40 works great for water proofing boots also

  • Obi-wan!!

    Looks comfortable.

  • you look like a Jedi. : P well it may not be like it but i think so. awesome stuff. I've learned so much from watching your videos.

  • Ben Kenobi!!! Good video!!

  • Great video! I've been wanting to make a wool shirt for a long time now. I'm also in the process of making buckskin. The pattern you used will definitely help me out!

  • Nice, I like the shirt. It will go well with the handmade quiver and long bow. When I was a kid I'd trap 6 to 8 coons per week and sell them to Old man Pickle in the Hill Country out Northwest Austin, TX. I wish I would have kept some and made a coon vest or coat with dozen or so. They are fatty critters in deed, I didn't even know about the tallow method. Thanks again Dave; I'm going to try stitch up a buckskin shirt for now. I like the pattern, looks good.

  • Excellent Video Dave!!!

    *****

  • hobbit clothes

  • i would have just folded the the blanket in half cut a hole for my melon and tied a cord around my waist...

  • Make a poncho like Clint Eastwood used in his western movies.

  • for the tallow you can probably add some mint leaves while it's cooking to add a more pleasant scent...

  • Actually Racoon Tallow does not smell.

  • exactly my point...

  • @wildernessoutfitters That answers my question on the tallow on the boots attracting critters from the scent. :-D Great videos.

  • Dave... I dont want to sound weird or anything.... And I think I speak for all of us, I'm gonna miss your videos.... I love the shirt, great job....

  • Can you do this with any animal fat?

  • could u eat that fat with out getting sick or anything......fresh vid

  • Yes you could in an emergency

  • omg, that shirt looks like something a peasant in the medieval time would wear, very similar at least.

you could make a button from bone or wood for the neck of the shirt, where you plan for the closure, too bad you wouldn't have a hood on the shirt, keep you warmer.

also, don't you need to wear orange while hunting? if not, whatever.

  • No orange except gun week, I dont hunt then anyway. Have not finished yet buddy, remember I said I was trying to save material for something.

  • Dave..

Fine looking shirt Bro.. I'm very impressed.. Thanks for a great video

  • Wow... Dave made a snuggie...

  • not really, snuggies have no back on them, this shirt does.

  • @flamedrag18 I know it's the pathfinder snuggie. Put those in Walmart and make a million...

  • as i said, not a snuggie, snuggies are a blanket with arms and a hood, but no back, this SHIRT has a back, sewed and everything, don't confuse this with a snuggie.

  • Great vid Dave thanks man

  • I would think that using left over wool scraps to add pockets to your hunting shirt would be a good example of on-going improvements that could be made (in addition to the decoration and neck closure you mentioned). Thanks for the video.

  • nice idea

  • Enjoyed the raccoon bonus, thanks Dave!

  • shoot, i was going to make a video about coonfat, you beat me to it dave, great video

  • Awesome shirt!

  • You look like Rambo from Rambo I: First Blood except more resourceful and maybe more dangerous.

"Are you telling me that 200 of our men against your boy is a no-win situation for us?

-You send that many, don't forget one thing.

    What?

-A good supply of body bags."

  • just thought of another question...can tallow be made from the fat of any animal? just found a freshly killed dear (someone killed for the head apparently), might try to make some tomorow...

  • @drumrrr83

There's not much fat on deer. But yes tallow can be made from any fat.

  • yup, from any animal, but some animals don't have have much fat like squirrels, rabbits/hares, and deer, since they have high metabolisms, but a bear or hog would be the best source of fat, bear especially now, right before hibernation, it will be full of fat, same process, but be prepared for all the fat, the bear will have close to half it's weight in fat right now.

  • thats a good looking shirt! id wear that thing out to the bars! LOL going to see if i can find a surplus store in the cleveland area to look for blankets, i gotta make one for myself!

  • You should strain the liquid into another container, what comes to the top and sets hard is the tallow. The liquid beneath it can also be condensed down to make glue.

  • You da man Dave!

  • gr8 vid dave n lance, tallow candles are something ive been interested in for a while ,so thanx for making it look more easy ,also dave you forgot to say that the tallow itself can be eaten as sa last resort .... if your snares ,traps were not getting results, respect tintin18975

  • could your tallow, and some wood ash- make some lye soap?

  • YES

  • whould a old cabin be a good perosnal space it been abonde for a 100 year or better i was just wondering dave

  • I wish I was eating deer steak off the fire... is Lance a bowhunter or did he get it with a rifle?

  • cant rifle hunt in ohio, shotgun only. season doesnt start for a week. my guess is lance arrowed it or it was roadkill

  • I see I didn't know that... If you didn't know I live in missouri and we can hunt with rifle.. I dont usually, more of a bowhunter especially for deer..

  • Good job :)

    Greetings from Poland !

  • good video

    nice shirt

  • Did you have enough of the wool blanket left over to make anything like a hood, hat, mittens or socks?

  • 6:36 Holy crap, Dave's a Jedi! It HAD to be said XD.

On a tallow note, an old farmer told me a while back about some around-the-house chemical mix you can add to the fat while it's boiling to make it harden up almost like porcelain once it's cooled, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Would you know anything about that? If not, I'll see what I can do to get that information for you. The guy's son made medieval leather armor, so he made the tallow as a finish to toughen the armor

  • @HylianNinja

i know you can add ash to it, and it hardens and forms soap , but thats all i know

    sorry

  • Could you just use fat from a Beef? or stuff like that?

  • Awsome, Thanks Man!

  • fight club

  • Educational, good food and family. It does not get much better than that! Great video and thanks so much for sharing this with us Dave.

  • I love the shirt.. I will have to try and make one for sure.

  • great video

  • I was reading reviews about those Italian Army wool blankets - seems that folks who bought them through other places got them in the mail smelling fierce of moth balls. They said airing them out for a week makes the smell go completely away. I don't hear the same complaints from folks that get them from you. You must air them out good before selling them.

  • Wow... busy day. Great video

  • Thanks Dave

  • Animals are not dumb, Humans are just smarter!

  • Depends on the human. I've known animals that were smarter than some humans.

  • Ya like most of the deer i have seen.

  • preach it brother! The old ones know when it's huntin' season and where they can't be shot!
