What Azmi Bishara said is that there has never been a Palestinian nation and that it has existed for the past 1400 years as part of the larger Arab nation (led by Cairo, Baghdad or Damascus) or under the Ottoman empire in Istanbul.

Indeed, Arabs lived in the Land of Israel (as well as Jews, Greeks, Turks, Armenians) ,but during the Ottoman era they were not called "Palestinians", neither by the Ottomans nor by the Arab residents of the region themselves.
In fact, the Ottomans did not call the land "Palestine" either during their 400 years here. Under the Ottomans, the land was part of various administrative districts such as the Vilayet of Damascus and the Sanjak of Jerusalem. Of course, Europeans sometimes referred to the region as a whole by the name "Palestine", but they also had a vague idea of what that meant--the name also included vast parts of present-day Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, as well as Israel and the West Bank and Gaza.
At any rate, from the Romans until the British, the name "Palestine" was really never the official name for the country as a whole, and it was never considered the name of any specific nationality. When the British kicked out the Turks in 1917 they were awarded a mandate over a big part of the region and they decided to revive the old Roman name "Palestine". From 1917-1922, British "Palestine" also included present-day Jordan.

What Azmi Bishara said is that there has never been a Palestinian nation and that it has existed for the past 1400 years as part of the larger Arab nation (led by Cairo, Baghdad or Damascus) or under the Ottoman empire in Istanbul.
Similarly a Virginian nation has never existed but that doesn't mean that the province (state) of Virginia has not been part of the United States and would not give a group of Spaniards the right to Virginia because it was never a separate nation state.

Many of them such as yours truly, also come from families that have never left the Land of Israel. My father's mother was born in Jerusalem-her ancestors were living here since at least the 1500s (probably longer). Many Arabs only arrived here in the 1800s/1900s.

Except the Holocaust is an actual historical occurrence, whereas there has never been a sovereign political entity called "Palestine", "FIlastin", etc. My late grandmother was born in Jerusalem in 1907 to a Jewish family with unbroken roots going back many generations.
