a car doesn't stop accelerating just because the speedo hits the end stop. its obviously still going way past 85!!!

@coolakiIlen007 ..because of an anti-speed campain. it was an obligation for aome years in the 80´s for all car maufactors. i saw pontac firebird trans am of that time with high output 5.7 V8 which had a top speed high above 200 kmh which also had a 85 mph speedometer. after some years the us-government accept the fact that is ridiculous and a 85 mph speedometer doesn´t save any lives

I hawe a 1979 w123 240D i goes faster than that, this car must be limited or somteing or the spedo is from a different car who knows :)

it s about california law ath that tme which has forbidden speedometers which shows more than 85 miles. my friend has trans am from 1985 who has also a speedometer with maximum85 miles, 135 kilomters although that trans am runs 240 kmh

All Mercedes 450 models took a huge hit in horsepower for 1980. Euro cars were rated at 230 and US cars had 180 but in 1980 that dropped to 155. By 1981 they went to the 380 SEL meaning a 3.8 litre v-8 rated about the same horsepower. I am sure any 450 SEL could exceed 85mph though. Just because it's on the speedo doesn't mean it goes that speed!
