The intention of the study is to 'dupe' the subjects enlisted. The last pair of images presented to Leslie are so incredibly alike they are meant to trip you up. Such studies are useless in the real world and these types of studies are meant to create a pseudoscientific basis for False Memory syndrome (FMS). FMS is making inroads among the lazy or incompetent psychotherapists who do not want to deal with patients experiencing recollections of previous child abuse.

@2huntnfish These studies are not useless at all. It casts huge doubt on cases where most of the evidence is eye witness testimony. People are sometimes convicted of crimes they didn't commit because they were chosen out of a lineup which didn't even contain the real criminal.
I assume the name of the study comes from the fact that you CAN manufacture some memories. Like people being led to believe that when they were children they were lost in the mall, when such an event had never happened.
