Yes this ruins the strength of the helmet but no-one is forcing you to do it, so if you want to risk it then go for it, if not then a decent bullet cam or similar will cost you quite a lot.
My cam is inside the helmet behind the visor and modifys the helmet in no way at all but I had to use a camera with much lower quality (about mobile phone video maybe a bit better) and cost me £9 total.
So, risk it for good quality or not, its your choice. He made his choice so stop moaning at him for it
JUst a little note for the folks that think this is so unsafe.... Alot of moto helmets these days are built with collapsable face gaurds because tests have proven that it's better to get a busted face than a broken neck which is sure to happen with a frontal impact with a big bar 5" in front of your face. Best thing is to see whats in front of you and not to hit it!!
You whiners crack me up!! This is the best way I've seen as far as visibility of the rider, room in the helmet and plain ol good looks.... I ride with a skull cap anyways and a helmet cam is the only reason I'd were a full face helmet. Kudos to you Mr. Wilson.... I'm ordering my Fulmer helmet and V570 today!!
Other than changing your helmet's integrity, this was an excellent idea. You took your time and did it well. Nice job!
I think you should add "this may reduce the effectiveness of your helmet during a crash" to the description. There are alot of idiots out here who might not understand the consequences of modifying a helmet.
I meant "put a bullet cam on the helmet in such a place as it's not in your field of view". At no point did I suggest your camera is in your field of view (I'm not that daft lol). What I meant was there's alternative options to cutting up a piece of safety equipment ;)
As I also said though, it's your head, so do what you like with it ;)
Awesome concept, though I too am worried about helmet integrity. While I understand it may feel rigid, think of how the physics of the helmet work. Eggs are much the same way, in that they are super thin and yet quite strong. if you were to cut out part of the egg, well then that creates a pretty big weakness.
Anyway, you've already done it so I would like to make some suggestions! I'll do that in a second comment though seeing as how I have no characters left :)
If you were to heat the knife you use for the cutting of the foam, it goes through much easier. Also, it melts it all together so you don't get that flaky junk falling out all over the place!
Also - if you cared to invest a little more time into it - you could cut the plexiglass more to the shape of the inside of the helmet. For example, the sharp corners look to be holding the center of the glass further from the hole. I think if you trimmed that down there would be much smaller gaps
Everyone needs to chill out. I think this is a great idea. It does get the camera more out of your line of vision. If you were to get into a serious wreck and that tiny piece of foam would make a difference, I think you would be screwed anyway. Good job Wilsonrider69!!
Well, for the record, a 3/4 face mask IS less safe than a full face mask, so you are in effect admitting you just reduced the safety of your once full face mask to at least that of a 3/4. Either way I still don't see the point of this camera concept.
The point is to get the camera out of the line of site for motorcycle vloggers....I guess you have the choice of turning your full face into a 3/4 helmet "or" diminishing your vision while riding. I know which one I prefer and which one is safer.
I give you props for creativity--it's cool. But I've got to side with the rest of the guys about the mods possibly compromising your safety.
That helmet would offer you some protection--certainly better than no helmet at all. The issue is that you don't know how your mods will affect performance in a serious accident. Today's helmets are are designed to use every fiber in the helmet to absorb impact. If the physics behind that protection break down, so does your brain.
This is the dumbest idea! A bullet cam and some velcro is a lot cheaper and safer than destroying a helmet to stick a point-n-shoot camera inside it... Yikes.
OMG.. you've actually seriously compromised the entire integrity of the helmet!.. Please atleast post a disclaimer. Has this helmet been crashtested after this procedure to make sure it actually does its primary job?
Honsestly, I don't mean to flame away here, but no one should do this to there helmet. The amount of foam that has come out to make this work has seriously structurally damaged the integrity of the helmet. Not to mention the fact that if you go down with this thing the paramedics will be digging nikon out of your face.
Everyone who motorcycle vlogs does so with a certain amount of risk acceptance...if you get a chance to look at a helmet's chin bar sometime you will notice that the material that is there is already paper thin an not much protection anyway. After modding 2 helmets this way I can tell you that there is not a difference that I can feel in the structure of the helmet "and" using this method is much safer than what a lot of vloggers are doing when they stick the camera in their line of site.
The foam in a helmet is designed as a shell to work together regardless of how 'paper thin' it feels. Removing foam in one place weakens the entire helmet. And to be honest you won't feel the difference just by pressing on it. Helmets are designed for high speed sudden impacts, not slow pressing pressure. I'm sorry you feel different, but I reiterate no one should ever do this to their helmet.

I think I'd rather stick a bullet cam on the outside of the helmet, where it wasn't in my field of view, than cut my helmet up.
Still, it's your head so you can do what you like with it!! :p

man all the complainers need to go and complain to people that ride with half helmet first! only then can they critisize your helmet mod.
