MegaUpload was a file hoster. They were not responsible for the illegal activity that their users were engaging in, though they of course profited from it. In essence, the takedown of that site is pretty much what everyone was getting all excited about in PIPA and SOPA.

I don't know what the feedback regarding these features where but i don;t think Blizzard would make such major changes unless the Beta has shown they arn't working. Not only has Mega Upload been taken down without SOPA or PIPA, but a Richard O'Dwyer, a 23 year old college student who created a website that linked people to online video's (comparable to google video) has been extradited to the US and may face 10 years in prison.
The ESA pulled support for SOPA.... AFTER the people who wrote the bill pulled support for SOPA. These guys are terrible at their job. For the gaming community to feel better, the ESA should take a good hard look at the people who run their PR, and the higher ups who were so ill-informed to stick with SOPA for so long. Something needs to be fixed, and if it goes unchanged, then who knows what sort of corruption the ESA will get into in the future.
Still can't wait for Diablo 3... But I made it so far, so i guess i can wait just a little longer. I think the closing of megaupload was pretty bad timed because i was just about the same time as the protest against SOPA.

@Xodeous i've never had this problem when using icefilms, streaming tons and tons of movies from megaupload :\ they did do that for a bit but they kept changing things and before they got taken down recently they allowed you to instantly watch a movie via ICE with no count down timer.
I remember the old days when it wasn't such a big issue. Computer games on 3 1/2 foppies could be just copied and given to buddies. It wasn't ever about piracy on anything. It was just about sharing the the game with my friends. Now, games are almost DOUBLE in cost what they were then. On the other side, costs of producing those games have gone exponentially as well.
On manga and anime, these "piracy" sites often is the only place you can get current stuff. I don't DL. I just view.

If they fixed the wording, I would have little problem with the acts, but as of right now the acts would give the government a lot of control that they do not need over virtually everything on the internet. There is a huge problem with piracy, anyone who doesnt admit that is ridiculous. However, the numbers of how much hollywood is losing on pirated movies or record companies are losing on pirated songs are inflated. Somebody takes it like a demo, somebody takes it like anti DRM even they have original, but dont want CD in drive or they dont want be connected to the internet when they play, an there are people, who dont have the money, because the money for last 5 year they gave for the computer on console, so the company can not calculate every download as a lose.
And for the Megaupload, i think that the goverment is controling every byte, that go thru the internet, byiause, how can they know, what is inside the rar or zip package, when they are not the owner and uploader of the file. And how much, can Megaupload affect the uploaders and files, when they can not look inside every file. Its like every sharing service, people sharing with each other.
But when he downloads the game from internet, company for copyrights say, you created for as a damage for 200 000$, and he gets in the jail. In my eyes its the same crime.
When you steal something that is for 500$ its a misdemeanor and zou go not in the jail, but you do somethink for the public, like cleaning the streets for 2 hours or so, and sometimes you pay only the prize for the thing that you steal. And when its more then 1000$ it is a crime, andy you go to jail. And let me see, what they do, to a guy, who steals a game. When he steals in a shop, nobody see him, he get a original game, and everybody is happy. When they see him, he pays for the game 50$.
Hey Force, i think that censorship is already on the internet, so SOPA means not so much, there are some videos on youtube, they i can not play (not allowed in your country) and i am in EU. The same for some US sites, i can not watch or play thinks on those sites. I was not able to see VGA online, because i was not UK or US, thats a shame. I really think you should reconcider how big the "system changes" actually are/were. All they really did was to either remove or rename stuff that was already implementet.
- Nephalem Cube and Cauldron of Jordan: Got deleted, they instead gave the blacksmith the ability to salvage.
- Town Portal/Stone of Recall: Deleted the stone, same funtion, just a different "thing". Not a big deal of work.. at all.
- Attributes: Renamed them and changed a few numbers in the database.

As a response to taking down megaupload. There are still people doing something about FBI / U.S Government taking down websites as they please.
Things like Pirate Bay and Lime Wire should be shut down. Everyone knows they are stealing and there should not need to be any thing in place to take them down, That being said they cannot be restricting user created content and should maybe shut things down from a user by user perspective not whole websites. I don't know what the feedback regarding these features where but i don;t think Blizzard would make such major changes unless the Beta has shown they arn't working. I prefer to wait and get a greta game then needing 10 patches week 1. Let's remeber the game can't be late if there has been no release date issued on it.

The ESA pulled support for SOPA.... AFTER the people who wrote the bill pulled support for SOPA. These guys are terrible at their job. For the gaming community to feel better, the ESA should take a good hard look at the people who run their PR, and the higher ups who were so ill-informed to stick with SOPA for so long. Something needs to be fixed, and if it goes unchanged, then who knows what sort of corruption the ESA will get into in the future.

@Xodeous i've never had this problem when using icefilms, streaming tons and tons of movies from megaupload :\ they did do that for a bit but they kept changing things and before they got taken down recently they allowed you to instantly watch a movie via ICE with no count down timer.

I remember the old days when it wasn't such a big issue. Computer games on 3 1/2 foppies could be just copied and given to buddies. It wasn't ever about piracy on anything. It was just about sharing the the game with my friends. Now, games are almost DOUBLE in cost what they were then. On the other side, costs of producing those games have gone exponentially as well.
On manga and anime, these "piracy" sites often is the only place you can get current stuff. I don't DL. I just view.

However, the numbers of how much hollywood is losing on pirated movies or record companies are losing on pirated songs are inflated. Offcourse its used by pirates but in comparison to what else it is used for then you would say that there are almost no pirates.... Take a large bank every large bank is used for laundering and the cards they give are being scimmed big time. but the bank can't do much about it and it is used by alot people who dont launder or scim. Megaupload knew full well what they were being used for the majority of which was illegal content. I really think you should reconcider how big the "system changes" actually are/were. All they really did was to either remove or rename stuff that was already implementet.
- Nephalem Cube and Cauldron of Jordan: Got deleted, they instead gave the blacksmith the ability to salvage.
- Town Portal/Stone of Recall: Deleted the stone, same funtion, just a different "thing". Not a big deal of work.. at all.
- Attributes: Renamed them and changed a few numbers in the database.

Things like Pirate Bay and Lime Wire should be shut down. Everyone knows they are stealing and there should not need to be any thing in place to take them down, That being said they cannot be restricting user created content and should maybe shut things down from a user by user perspective not whole websites. Its better to use a scalple than a chain saw.
