I've been collecting basketball cards (off & on) for 10 years.  I've busted a lot of boxes and the majority of my collection I've pulled. But I would say about 10% are from eBay or card shows. You can buy a "Beckett Basketball" magazine and find values of cards there. I just use it as a guide really, screw them. I'll come up with my own values. You have to be careful of what you buy. Stores like KMart usually carry retail basketball cards which have less hits than hobby.
