How can ya say it's live, when Del's obviously lip-synchin'? Del hit #33 in Billboard, 2-6-82. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week. RIP, Del.
@DaveWollenberg I heard him do this live and it sounded every bit as good as this. WATCH HIS THROAT as he sings this in this clip, and listen for his breath. It's LIVE. He was one of the few who actually sounded better live than in the recordings as he got older. His live "Runaway" just a year before he died beat the old recorded version COLD. It was cleaner, clearer, *more* soulful, absolutely beautiful. They don't make them like that anymore.
@DaveWollenberg actually heard Del say on an interview when asked about the two different endings - quote he says the Solid Gold performance was recorded live
Del was so talented, to make a classic song sound better than the original, how often does that happen? He himself was a great songwriter too, wish he was still alive so I could see him in concert but he's not so videos like this are so wonderful to see, thanks
i was like alright this is awesome, its going great and then the man on the synthesizer filled whatever i thought might have been missing even if there wasnt anything and took me on a magical journey through a tunnel of melody and harmony.
Wow, its really sad that he wasn't as big as he should have been with his voice and style; all I ever heard were Runaway and the other hits he had around that time period. If he were alive now, I'd want to hear him in concert.
I think Del sounded even better when he got older. His voice was always right on pitch. I am listening to all his hit and loving every minute of it. I just hate he didn't know how great he really was.
@lukeloveslauraalways - I agree I thought he got better as he got older. Such a great rock n roll voice. What a great performer - I could listen to him all day long.
Thanks for the great post, DelRocksMySpace!! He rocks my space, too!! My wife and I saw him several times in the mid-eighties before he died. She, too, was convinced of his greatness as a performer. Five stars!!
I heard Cat Power's version before I heard this one, but I can honestly say, from a teenager's point of view, the original is better. More upbeat and overall, nicer to listen to. Just my opinion.
Cat Power? Come on. Her version sounds like a beached-whale moaning in pain while someone strums a guitar in the background. This is a Louisiana swamp-pop song. Del's version is good with what sounds like a south Texas influence.
I saw this on Solid Gold and went straight out and bought the album. This is easily the best version of this song and I include in that the original. Del Shannon was the greatest rock singer / writer/ producer of all time.
Sea Of Love was opriginally a #1 by Phil Phillips in 1959. Del Shannon released his version of this song in 1981 and got a Top 40 hit with it. It's is off the excellent album, Derop Down And Get Me. It was prodcued by Tom Petty and the band playing on the album is The Heartbreakers. Del Shannon remained an excellent songwritter his whole career, and he had a knack for covering the best songs too.
...another perfect bass line. Listen to it it is flawless. Howie was an acquaintance of mine.
We lived near each other. He was a great talent
bigger than most people will ever know. Check out his MS page. Howie was a very kind and humble and shy guy when I knew him. I wish he would not have died. Everyone who knew him pretty much says the same thing. Had he lived on, we would have heard a lot of great songs. RIP ...miss you!
I was just reading the 'Howie' chapter in a book called Conversations With Tom Petty...it's cool that you knew him...as a musician myself, I always appreciated Howie's contributions to The Heartbreakers; Tom describes him as his Everly Brother!...a sad loss indeed
My family and the Epstien's actually used to be very good friends, and I always thought it was way cool that Howie was in the Heartbreakers. Tom Petty didn't like totally steal him though, he really enjoyed there music, so :P. It was really sad to go to his funeral, but I also got to see some of the great rock legends that I love like Stevie Nicks, but it wasn't as great as I'd imagined, I was too sad over Howie. I miss him, he was really awesome.
the most underated singer of all time fantastic songwriter too ive met him backstage 3 times a true gent also. anyone got the video of del on the rolf harris show 1966?
see the great Howie Epstein on bass guitar, the bass guitar. he also was an Heartbreakers member, the Tom Petty's band.He was a relly great musician with a good voice, he died few years ago.
anything 'del'....is to be treasured....proud to say he's from michigan.... :))

Hard to believe the harmony vocals starting at ~ 0:50 aren't studio-doctored. Almost sounds like a female ensemble.
