You are correct in saying one individual doesn't speak for everyone. There are some muslims who aren't hostile. I personally don't support the muslim population though. It angers me when people say the crusades were a horrible thing. I am facinated by them. I also hate when people act like the muslims were peaceful and did nothing to start the crusades which, is compleatly untrue. The cristians may have done some un-noble things but so did the muslims. The cristians began to use the muslims methods against them. After the battle of Hattin, Saladin executed all the remaining Templars and Hospitallers because they refused to convert to islam. That is just one example. I suppose the crusaders decided to give them similar options. As to your other question all I can say is I follow the one true Gods teachings and that doesn't include islam.

First of all the info I wrote wasn't based on the movie. Balien is real and was the defender of Jerusalem and Baron of Ibelin at one point. He also made the nogotiations I mentioned previously. -rivalry between european kingdoms.
-europe was very poor at that time.
-plague & other factors lead to decline in european population.
-few crusaders were left to defend the holy land.
