As a performer, orchestral percussion, I ALWAYS prefer a conductor with a clear beat pattern versus some vague in the air conducting. That being said; baring some intense multi-meter 20th century / 21st century work, conducting the 'phrasing' so to speak is perfectly fine and can, indeed, be helpful as well. Good job and thanks for sharing!
Conducting unfortunately is a very custom art so it's hard to teach a standard in it. All potential conductors have their own style that they eventually go into. What's hard is keeping pace and cueing. Since we're in so much control of the orchestra it's hard to not get too much into the tune. Though I'd imagine by now you've mastered the art. I still have alot to learn about it. My favourite music to conduct though is Handel's. Va Tacito from Giulio Ceaser. Anyways, Thanks for posting these.
I feel like you're a little trapped by the beat pattern. They all know where one, two, three and four are, so you don't have to be tied down by showing the group where they are in the music.
I am actually taking some conducting lessons. I am a junior in high school. I will be preforming with an orchestra. I actually have been greatly helped by your videos. I notice some faults of my own and I place myself in your shoes when being criticised. Don't listen to these amatuers. They don't know what it is like. I did not know what it was like until I actually did it for the first time myself. GOOD JOB
I am the conductor, and have played tuba under many of the world's best conductors. This video was taken almost 10 years ago when I had ZERO experience with a baton. why don't you read the info on the video before jumping to conclusions?
I´ve said that if the corrections I´ve written were the same as Schindler´s, then YOU WOULD BE WASTING TIME. If they´re not, you´re learning from my comments... Did you understand now?
Not a waste of time, what I did was to watch you conducting, stop the video and then make corrections... I would waste more time if I had listened to Jeffrey Schindler correct you´re gesture.
Hopefully he has not spoken the same as me... Than it would be a waste of time, but not for me, but for you, that read the same corrections twice!
It is difficult to understand your writing (English), but it sounds like you have been learning from these videos, which is great. Glad to be of service.

The only one who should have learned something here is yourself. But it seems like you are too cocky to recognize how much your "conducting" performance sucks. A pity, considering that you have worked with "world famous conductors". You should know the difference by now.
Ah, OK. Perhaps if you paid more attention to the video and read the text associated with it you would't have wasted your time with all those comments. Thanks for caring though.
If this is really your very FIRST class, you're on your way. I posted a very critical comment before, but I hadn't read your information. I hope you forget them. You have a lot to learn but you're doing very fine at it won't be too hard for you to improve a lot.
My god! I don't mean to be mean but isn't anybody watching? The rest was great!? Did this guy have any conductors training at all? I'm sorry but, unless this young man learns the rudiments of music making with a baton in the hand, he shouldn't stand before an orchestra, not even such a kind one as these.
Great work, even without any experience on conducting. The musicians said they was good. So, that's true.

Great video, excellent for understanding a lot of such a complex thing as conducting. Thanks for sharing!

Are the musicians just ignoring him???
When you watch, just imagine:
"I'm a little teapot, short and stout....."

why should a man who played tuba under many of he worlds best conductors make bad movies uploaded by youtube?

"This is from a conducting class I took at UCLA extention with conductor and orchestrator Jeffrey Schindler in 2002."
You said the video was taken 10 years ago? That would make it 2012. I'm confused.

5 years. Sorry.

10 years ago?!? And you still bother replying to people who post comments on your videos????

One question for the conductor: have you EVER watched a real professional conductor do his job?!?

I do understand better now, although I'm not looking for criticism, as the video was taken many years ago. Thanks.

If you dont't expect criticism, don't upload this kind of video.

also check that musicians do a crescendo in both first notes, D and E, altough your gesture doesn´t ask for it...
whookamnet 4 years ago
In the consequent, measure 15, change your gesture to legato, there´s no need to use sharp lines...
whookamnet 4 years ago
Take care of your left arm , most of the time, it only conducts beats 3 and 4.
