US has 2 robotic spacecraft on the Martian surface -- several craft in deep space and one, the first entirely solar powered spacecraft in route ot Jupiter. Plus, the US has put more people from other nations into space. Soviets never returned an unmanned craft from the moon & US heads up the future flight to Mars - cosmonauts being trained by NASA.

James Van Allen said so himself. Even if you are in the most dangerous parts of the belts, it would take 2-3 months to absorb a lethal amount of radiation.
