This dude is just so good! There is a lot to learn by watching his style and checking out his time feel. Practice, practice, practice! oh yeah....and then........PRACTICE!
Hey Folks. . You can see and hear Keith in action on the new RUDDER live DVD. over 2 hours of footage, and a big keith drum solo. Four Camera shoot, mixed by nic hard. nineteeneight (dot) com
Keith's got such a lovely, light musical touch. When he needs to drop bombs or get loud snare accents etc, he's got that, but unlike a lot of drummers who just beat the living daylights out of their kits, this guy plays melodically and sensitively—This guys' a wizzard without any doubt.
Remember if you always bash every part of the kit, where else can you go? Because drums don't have scales and arpegios as such, melody has to be implied by using many varying degrees of force.
Have been studying his dvd for a few months. Don't don't don't underestimate Keith's arms and stick motions. If you focus on and practice towards gaining those high arm whips and stick paths/motions and can learn to get that whipping velocity, you will be amazed when your doubles starting having that type of power and volume. You will feel like that is no effort to it.....and there won't be much...
0.44- 0.46 - i think the fill he played was like that. a paradiddle-diddle twice then with doubles on the feet and you do it twice. The first R L are played on the toms then the rest on the snare. any experienced drummer want to correct me? because i am trying to figure out how to do that fill. its so tasty
@blight4hire That fast roll which is the fill I think you're referring to, is in fact a sixteenth note triplet played with a double stroke roll. This is a very hard rudiment/phrase to play because it requires an accent on the first note of the first double and then an accent on the second note of the second double=R r l L r r L l r R
Yeh, if you want to get good, learn how to put accents into double stroke rolls—should keep you busy...
@kewlfonz ...I dont think so. It's a common 8 note grouping he does, consisting of two bass drum hits, and a paradiddle-diddle. Sometimes he'll tighten up the first two snare hits into a flam. Check out his other solos and you'll see it all over the place. On drummerworld they have a solo from his DVD, it's got better audio for clarification!
not true friend.... I got an album of a live smooth jazz group (dont remeber the name of the band) keith was playing drums before he got real known and it was not happening at all. This was at least 10 years ago..
the theme of the story is you got a sound!!!! find it!!!!!! Gadd cant do what Vinnie does.... Paul Motion can't do what bill stewart does.. find your own.. skies the limit.. i never thought drums could be played like keith does.... it's all coming out of nothing...
The band you're trying to think of is called "The Head's Up Super Band". If you listen to Keith's work on people's cd's like Clay Aiken or Jane Getter, you will find him sounding more like any other drummer (still great but he's not playing stuff like on this video). In fact, I suggest that if Keith ONLY played like he does with WKT all the time, he wouldn't have made it onto Steely Dan's stuff. Like all great musicians, one must play to the music to make music.
I hear what your saying but he was playing with Wayne when Donald Fagen and Walter Becker sat in and then decided to hire Keith so he got the gig while playin' very busy stuff.
Absolutely.................now, imagine Keith's first day in the studio with Donald and Walter.......and Two Against Nature is called out and away he goes with the stuff he plays in WKT.............what do you think that exchange which would follow might be like?
@ostrichfoot ... a good point you make ... I did a gig last summer with someone who went to North Texas with Keith .. he told me that Keith had fabulous chops because of drum corps but thats about it ..he had no voice on drumset ... Keith obviously developed into something extraordinary ... it is within us , we just have to find it ...good post man
oh man....this is great stuff !!...been rollin' around the idea, after seein' keith w/ steely dan in sept...of how phattback funky he's always been......now here's a killa piece of modern fusion !!!...
A very innovative nyc combo...and all humble gentlemen, for sure !!
i feel circles and more open with trad grip(triplets.). reg grip i feel more straight and linear. does that make sense? at least for me i def generate more power from reg grip and feels more comfortable to me. always trad grip with brushes though
@TheDrumma42 definitely makes sense .... I have heard Joe Morello talk about trad VS matched and he is absolutely convinced that he can swing much harder with trad grip .... i am like you , i use trad for brushes but typically use matched grips with sticks ... then again i do not play a hell of a lot of swing ...mostly funk and rock oriented drumming
Yeah dude . I agree. I do play both but trad impresses me more . it's beginning to look like some artistic reference from the past. And that has everything to do w/the instant gratification fixes modern drummers crave.

Another good drummer that uses what grip? That's right trad. No coincidence that the best players use it. Great left hand. Try it you matched grip limitors.
wow keith has a pretty cool style but does anyone know who is the guy on the guitar cos he was playing some pretty eclectic out there stuff which makes keiths job all the more harder and kudos to him
Wayne Krantz with Lefebvre on bass, it was thanks to Krantz that Carlock got the Steely Dan gig, Krantz's drummer, 6 years +, Thursday nights, the 55 Bar NYC, sadly the gig is no more.
Keith is very interesting to watch play when it comes to technique. He has that crazy loose french grip type thing going with his right hand and he's choked ridiculously far back on the stick in his left. Buuut, it definitly works for him. He has some thunderous beats. I'm really digging his playing right now. I like his hi hat foot work too. He really incorporates it into the groove, as opposed to always keeing it strictly on the quarter note or the backbeat. Very tasteful.
Both of you are idiots for not knowing the difference between your and you're. Your is possessive, you're means you are, which is the one you were looking for.
The only thing which sounds similar to you about this music compared to Chick Corea's is the effect Wayne Krantz is using, the MoogerFooger Ring Modulator
Im guessing the those who think youre weird dont play traditional grip? They really only need to try it for a few seconds with traditional grip to understand.
It's all preference my friend. I practice both grips, but using my snare like that matched isn't really a problem for me. Everyone has their own way of doing things. ^_^
I'm not saying it can't be done, it concerns the basic physics of hitting a drum that's most economical/comfortable while movin round the rest of the kit, you could get used to it though. The problem here is, you'd find your left hand hittin the rim of the 1st rack tom during fast fills (as a match player), or, you'd have to travel the extra distance to avoid it, which'd slow u down.
Very funny.... For those of you who don't know, there are a growing number of people deprived of attention who post absurd comments like this to intentionally provoke a response.
