Long ago I had a grey cheek parrot, which she was about 10 months old when we got her. She would eat hand outs only when offered or prechew from the mouth. After a couple a years she started stealing and flying off to a higher spot in the room with her food prize. We had a cookie/candy jar made of thick glass and a thick glass lid. she eventually learned to lift it up and slide it off , to get herself a treat. We had to be a lot more mindful with what we had laying out. = )
if i was eating something, that would be healthy to the bird, not what your eating i would gladly give up my food for this awesome and endangered species.
There is a good reason not to feed the kea, and it's because feeding them makes them dependent upon humans and unable to survive by themselves. This means that they will become even more endangered, especially since it is very easy for humans to tire of taking care of particular cute animals over time. While you might think that you're doing them a favor, it actually hurts them in the long run. Thus, if you can avoid it, try not to feed them (but yes, they are adorable and hard to resist...)
There's still a one-legged kea at Arthur's Pass as of 4 September, 2011 - saw him spill a girl's milkshake and take chunk of her lolli cake!
