Jeezzzz... Now the problem is you wont be able to shoot for another week because your wrist will hurt so much. .45-70 is big on a rifle... Well not that big but still
Jesus, that thing's a zip gun with a handle. Why not just hold the cartridge in your fist and hit it with a hammer? What's next, a 4-bore over .50BMG derringer? Or maybe 2-bore over 20mm?
They do, but it's a custom order item. Also, the case rims are so big that you would have to file off part of the lip to fit both cartridges in at the same time (that's what AD told me).
You would be better served with a .45-70/.44 mag or .357 mag combination. Or go for the .45-70/.410+.45 colt of you live in a free state.
According to the brass fetcher website (300gr hot-cor load from the derringer):
Single shot fired from 6" distance. Bullet impacted at unknown velocity, penetrated to 26.3" and expanded to 0.614" average diameter. Bullet recovered at 287.0gr weight.
26.3" penetration into gelatin is VERY impressive out of a derringer. Most common pistol rounds would penetrate 10-15" especially out of that short a barrel.
Worst case you'd still light your target on fire :D
Number 1. You should not cock the hammer until you are ready to pull the trigger and hit whatever you're aiming at.
Number 2. (Regardless if you only put one bullet in) Do you really think it's a good idea to violently flail the gun around after you shoot it, so that when you shoot with other people you can not only show them that you are afraid of it, but that you also enjoy putting them in danger?
Unfortunately, shooting accidents prove valid points... learn from them, don't cause them.
In case a grizzly bear sneaks up on you at your tasteful masquerade ball, hiding easily away in a tux pocket, you can protect yourself and your date with this lovely piece.
@XR4turbo You are supposed to half-cock it with the safety on so the firing pins are not sticking out and hit the primers. If its still pointed at your face when you close it, I think you are holding it backwards.
@CREWGOG289,NOT EVERYBODY GETS TO OWN THEM DUMB ASS,check the laws in other states,I live in California and I CAN'T OWN A 45/410 which is one that I want to get so now I'm trying for the 45/70 upper and lower
You can custom order (or retro-fit a Model 1) to any combo you like. If I want one in CA, that's what I'd have to do.
They also sold the Alaskan M-4 in a .45-70/.45 colt ONLY version, but it's rare. Pure .45 colt works better because of no big freebore liek the ones overbored to accept .410.
@theAXL35784 why would you say 9mm is to much, larger cal pistols like 40 and 45 acp often aren't enough to stop a threat quickly, so why would 9mm be to much?
@Bumblesski I've never heard anyone say 9mm is too much either. That's my minimum for CCW since compacts are offered in that caliber and it's best for guns that size. 45acp is a great close up and medium range round but because of it's size and slow muzzle speed it doesn't have much velocity at long range. Pistols aren't intended for long range so that's OK. Maybe he's talking too much recoil? In which case I suggest 40s&w. It's basically a faster 9mm with snappy recoil. I prefer 45 over 40.
@theAXL35784 why would you say 9mm is to much, larger cal pistols like 40 and 45 acp often aren't enough to stop a threat quickly, so why would 9mm be to much?
@aquaphone In case of self defense a 9mm is enough , quite too much! Any caliber is good for self defense ( obviously in case of emergency), even a .22 LR is good.
Rifle round in a derringer....What stupid idea will someone come up with next? That round is a kicker in the magnum research BFR platform, and that gun with a 7.5" barrel is like 5 lbs or more. It looks like fun to shoot, but i cant see putting a historical round like the 45-70 to a practical use in this derringer.
@Bigman031893 Its marketed as a survival weapon. Sure, lots of the power from the 45-70 is wasted with such a short barrel. But it still had some grunt in it and especially in places where there are bears and such it could be quite useful. Considering only one of the barrels takes the 45-70 round. The other one is .45 Colt/.410.
If it were a pure 45-70 gun it would be a piece of crap though.
Completely useless, but certainly looks fun to shoot at least once. Reminds me of my old .45-70 Handi-Rifle - It really serves no purpose, but anything inside 75 yards is dead meat.
that pistol is pointless, just like punching out the rib in a judge. dont get me wrong i love my judge but why would you ever run a round that big through a gun that cant use it
To deanage69: Respectfully, go back to their site & look up the Model 4 Alaskan Survival Model - NOT the Model 4 Survival Model. They are different. Any way - if you look up pricing you'll see the M-4 Alaskan Survival (M4AK457ST) you will see it does in fact exsist & it is what you see in my video. Thank you for viewing!
I have shot one of these before. It is absolutely retarded and the only thing it causes is pain to the shooter. There is no point in it. Just get a .44 mag and your gonna do the same damage with less recoil and more accuracy.
That's a pretty large frame for a "Derringer"...my BFR .45-70 weighs over 4 pounds and has a pretty stout kick. I'm guessing that the loading used in the vid was a reduced loading. I would recommend using Aliant 2400 powder as it's fast burning and will combust as completely as possible in such a short barrel...using IMR 3031, you'll blow out a lot of unburnt powder and the mass of the ejecta will reaaallllyy add to felt recoil.
I wonder what the ballistics are like on .45/70 from that short barrell. I'd wager that most of it goes into that cone of fire coming out of the barrel. (and less into bullet velocity, though it would still take someone's head off, I'm sure)
I remember doing that. I always thought it would be a neat backup, but dang its not my favorite to shoot with that grip. Props for filming it, even with the experts denouncing it. Thats def. a 45-70 shell and def. a model 4 derringer...
It seems to be a bit of a waste with such a short barrel. I'm sure with such minimal time for the propellant to burn the weapon isn't even scratching the surface of the 45-70's potential. I'll stick to longer barrel lengths.

CRAP! I was not expecting that. When you grabbed the gun with both hands I thought "what's this guy doing", then BANG! Haha, man that reminds me of the noisy cricket from Men in Black.
He has the same look I did the first time I skydived on exit. The Oh shit here I go look. You cant teach it -thats instinct brother. It leaves a fireball like my Mosin m44.I love "getting" the guy next to me on the range with big boomers lol.
This video is awesome. Seeing it has been the highlight of my day. I need to move to the States so I can buy one of these. Until then, I must make do shooting 45-70 from my Marlin 1894. I am going out this weekend where there are griz. I'll strap on the Marlin and be questioned by forest pricks and tree huggers on the way in as to why I carrying it when it is not hunting season. Sorry if I don't feel like being mauled, dragged off and eaten. I am in Canada where we have stupid laws and liberals.
Well... pain for one thing. Perhaps also the expense of purchasing a gun with no practical use. Medical bills associated with the development of osteoarthritis.
dude its not a gun for everyday use.Its an alaskan survival pistol.I think its meant as a last resort measure is something attacks you ie "bears"... or mental salmon LOL!!
A barrel that short could never take advantage of the 45-70, you could chamber the same gun in a weaker cartridge and get just as much power for less recoil and muzzle flash.
@ionz75 most guns chambered in a rifle cartridge that uses that short of a barrel wont take much advantage of the round. I think this gun is one of those "just because we can" guns lol.
@ionz75 if that's the same derringer I've seen in other videos, one barrel is for .45-70, the other is .45LC/.410 shotgun.
But yeah, I wonder how much energy the .45-70 has coming out of there with that short barrel, and if you couldn't get similar peformance out of a conventional revolver loaded with .454 cassull or something.
@ionz75 I agree but the idea may have been to make a back up that chambered the same round as your rifle. this is a very popular big game round so this firearm might be attractive to hunters, thus the name survival gun.
In that case a Magnum Research BFR in 45-70 would be a much better option, as it would have the barrel length necessary to get the bullet up to respectable velocities. I know it would be heavier, but these derringers aren't exactly lightweights. Personally, I don't see much value in having a back up gun chambered in the same round as your rifle, the slow-burning gunpowder used in rifle rounds would make it even more inefficient out of a handgun.
@ionz75 About the whole "compensation" issue, damn right we're compensating! I've never been able to shoot bullets out of my penis, so I own firearms instead. ;)
Wow, I Love IT! Ranger Rick makes a 720gr .458 bullet, I wouldn't shoot it but I would like to watch! The recoil is so violent I'll bet it is almost impossible to keep both hands on it! Keep shooting, I'd like to see anyone pull the trigger without a little bit of hesitation.
@telerocker72 i would have to agree with you. that cartridge doesnt look big enough to be a 45-70. on top of that, shooting more than two rounds through my ruger #3 is enough to make anyone put it down for the day(and that is with a light load and a light weight slug). i doubt anyone could shoot the round through a pistol and not have it fly back in their face. next time, a close up of the cartridge would be handy.
lol, i have a 45 lc /410 version. that handle you have is nice, the only way to shoot that mamoth 45-70. some real soft cast bullet ought to do you best since its probly going all the way through anyway and the softer one transfers more energy.
@alzlon So what are you planning on doing when you happen to miss in your dark house with your pistol with only two shots and a one inch barrel? And I don't know if you have ever shot a .410 handgun with birdshot but after about 20 feet or so it aint exactly a one hitter quitter espicially out of a short barrel...
Jeezzzz... Now the problem is you wont be able to shoot for another week because your wrist will hurt so much. .45-70 is big on a rifle... Well not that big but still

The chamber pressure is too high- it would blow up (more than 1/3 higher than .45-70). Same reason they'll never make a .500 S&W version (I asked!).

45-70 derringer? Why?
ionz75 2 years ago 3
before I scrolled down to see the comments. I asked that very same question-Why? I have shot a lever action 45-70 and that is a shoulder breaker!!!
cmg617 2 years ago
Why not?
lmao!!
scottishbadboytracks 2 years ago 2
Well... pain for one thing. Perhaps also the expense of purchasing a gun with no practical use. Medical bills associated with the development of osteoarthritis.
ionz75 2 years ago
dude its not a gun for everyday use.Its an alaskan survival pistol.I think its meant as a last resort measure is something attacks you ie "bears"... or mental salmon LOL!!
scottishbadboytracks 2 years ago 3
A barrel that short could never take advantage of the 45-70, you could chamber the same gun in a weaker cartridge and get just as much power for less recoil and muzzle flash.
ionz75 2 years ago 13
Muzzle flash hater!!!!
HalfLifeAMD 2 years ago 2
@ionz75 most guns chambered in a rifle cartridge that uses that short of a barrel wont take much advantage of the round. I think this gun is one of those "just because we can" guns lol.
AllAlaskan907 1 year ago
@ionz75 if that's the same derringer I've seen in other videos, one barrel is for .45-70, the other is .45LC/.410 shotgun.
But yeah, I wonder how much energy the .45-70 has coming out of there with that short barrel, and if you couldn't get similar peformance out of a conventional revolver loaded with .454 cassull or something.
roentgen571 1 year ago
yes, but then you wouldn't have as much recoil or muzzle flash.....
87manowarkills 1 year ago
@ionz75 I agree but the idea may have been to make a back up that chambered the same round as your rifle. this is a very popular big game round so this firearm might be attractive to hunters, thus the name survival gun.
saxonforge 1 year ago
@saxonforge

The cartridge he holds in his hand looks much smaller than a .45-70. To my knowledge Bond Arms doesn't even make a barrel for .45-70.
telerocker72 2 years ago
your right bond arms doesnt make a 45-70 but the gun i am shooting is an american derringer M4 survival model
davegunman 2 years ago 28
ive drooled over that exact gun in the latest buyers guide as a matter of fact lol
MetalMan400 2 years ago
@davegunman isn't the m4 a .45 colt/.410?
PooPoo2U 1 year ago
@PooPoo2U 45 colt/410 on the bottem and 45-70 on top
AllAlaskan907 1 year ago
@telerocker72 i would have to agree with you. that cartridge doesnt look big enough to be a 45-70. on top of that, shooting more than two rounds through my ruger #3 is enough to make anyone put it down for the day(and that is with a light load and a light weight slug). i doubt anyone could shoot the round through a pistol and not have it fly back in their face. next time, a close up of the cartridge would be handy.
robertw006 1 year ago
@robertw006 It fits, but you only have like an inch of actual barrel. Look up Derringer 45-70 and there is another guy who does a review on one.
AllAlaskan907 1 year ago
barrel is too small for that bullet, nice husky in the background
SoccerBalbus 2 years ago
wow, I bet the long barrel makes that gun extremely accurate
KrazyKuul111 2 years ago
lol, i have a 45 lc /410 version. that handle you have is nice, the only way to shoot that mamoth 45-70. some real soft cast bullet ought to do you best since its probly going all the way through anyway and the softer one transfers more energy.

The best personal defense gun is the one you only have to shoot once.
ski2livelive2ski 2 years ago
that thing would of hurt like hell if it wasnt for the oversized grips
Maser209 2 years ago
best home defense handgun right there! careful whats behind the bad guy though, wouldn't wanna shoot your neighbors house across the street
megalord299 2 years ago
What the hell are you talking about?
Thats a terrible home defense gun!
It has only two rounds and is way to powerful.
Joelsefur 2 years ago 3
the best tool is the one you have with you.
you should only need one shot per person even with bird shot. home defence is where accuracy is the most important.
alzlon 2 years ago
@alzlon So what are you planning on doing when you happen to miss in your dark house with your pistol with only two shots and a one inch barrel? And I don't know if you have ever shot a .410 handgun with birdshot but after about 20 feet or so it aint exactly a one hitter quitter espicially out of a short barrel...
Joelsefur 5 months ago
The 45-70gov barrel is for shooting at the bear charging you and the .410 is for killing yourself when you miss. hahaha
