Although it made an operating profit at some stage, this was only after development costs had been written off. It never came close to paying those so sadly it was a failure. It cost the equivalent of 110 hospitals in Britain alone. We needed those rather more than we needed 16 expensive aircraft - no matter how charismatic they were.
Roy Jenkins at 2.35 - typical Labour politician: completely out of his depth. All bluff and bravado. Here he was the "Aviation Minister," yet graduated with a degree in politics, philosophy & economics. Knew nothing about aviation. Small wonder the UK is heading slowly and inexorably to third world status.

The problem with the concorde is that its too damn fast so that parts are shakin and people are ralphin while destinations are completely overflown because the pilots are sleeping on duty and blaming the pretty attendants for decaf and missing parts...-the end.
I think that the number of passengers was limitated by technical factors:more seats would have required a longer ,and much heavier, fuselage, and duraluminium would be not enough "strong" to guarantee the integrity at high speed. Structural integrity was a great problem, Concorde was re-designed several times in order to have enough safeness.
I wonder if with modern technology, like composite materials, digital avionics, more efficient and silent engines, etc..., an "updated" Concorde could be made again with lower costs, enough to make it practical...
We could have something like an "Airbus Concorde"... :)
I miss that plane I wish we could have a fast transport, noise, and cost killed it,the concorde only had 120 seats, the crash was a freak accident, sad as it was.
The U.S. just don`t like anyone being better than them so they start bullying countries that inevitably are better. We bowed to the bullies and cancelled the TSR2 and Concorde got discontinued.
Oh please. What makes the concord better? It carried less passengers. It cost more to operate. The only thing it offered was a faster flight at a higher altitude, which was great to see the curvature of the Earth. I always loved the unique look. And yes, it landed in San Diego ONCE at an air show near the border and offered rides. I agree it was a great plane, but not the best, just unique. Why would they bring it back when it cost more to operate anyway?
What a splendid aircraft ! I once saw it take off from NY JFK: Awesome vision and sound ! Remember that its economic failure was mainly due to US protectionism.
I don't blame the US more than French-British decision makers' illusions. In this world, every country plays its interests' game. We were told that the combination of US aircraft industry lobby, combined with growing environmentla concern, resulted in banning Concorde from flying over the USA. This certainly hampered Concorde's economics. But I'm not an expert.
I see what you're saying, the Concorde wasn't allowed to fly supersonic over the continental US. Not sure that was economically motivated, but Concorde still did fly to New York... and D.C. I think.
Concorde was NOT banned to fly over the US, it was banned to fly supersonically over the US, but not subsonically. This is the case with ALL countries, although there are exceptions like desert etc.
No it doesn't. It FLEW over land, so that's hardly banned. Only supersonic flight was banned - that was the case for any other country.
737's and all that have more or less 100 seats. The number of seats have nothing to do with it. Concorde flying subsonically would shave 15% off the time. Concorde was not only limited to airports on the coast, regularly flying over land to get to other airports for air shows or charters.
The vast majority of it's life was spent flying to NY, by a long shot. BA did fly once weekly seasonal flights to Barbados, but this didn't account for much when compared to the NY service.
With all respects, there is an "e" at the end of Concorde. Both BAC and Sud discussed which way to spell it and decided to add the "e" for excellent and extrordinary and (most of all) EXPENSIVE. Thank you for documenting airliners.
1: It was not actually scrapped, bar one aircraft which was sadly mistreated by a half-hearted Air France, who let it stand outside for many years until it was scrapped in 1994 because of severe corrosion.
2: That's your opinion, but to many more, Concorde is special, why let all that work go to waste. Concorde was built from dreams, and it also created many more dreams.
Concorde, for many people, will be forever special.
Bomberguy, since a while I am scanning Youtube for your video clips.
Today I found a collection of newswheel footage about the Concord.During this time I grew up and developed my interest in aviation.
I still regret not to see one of the last touchdowns of a Concord nearby here in Germany,12 miles away. This Concord now is on display in a technical museum outdoors aside of a Tupolev 144, also not far away.
Please continue with placing rare footage of aviation history to youtube. Regards
Whilst undoubtedly a beautiful machine and an interesting engineering exercise, Concorde was a disaster commercially. I would far rather the British/French contribution to commercial aviation had been something like the 747 and it had actually made a profit.
If the definition of an engineer is someone who could do for £1 what anyone else could only do for £10 then Concorde was a huge failure.
Something like the 747? BORING! The Concorde was a triumph of aeronautical engineering whose economic shortcomings could have been put right were it not for the utterly useless politicians led by idiots like Harold Wilson and others, not to mention idol tea break unionists who literally put a spanner in the works of all British manufacturing. That is why the Americans and others got the commercial advantage. With the 747 and similar airliners of today we are still stuck in the 1950s.
If any aircraft is stuck in the 50s it's Concorde. Bristol Olympus engines are rather old-hat.
Do you think the lightweight composite structures and advanced wing design of modern aircraft are 1950s? From 30 years working for RR involved in development of turbo fans I know just how high tech modern engines are. Quieter and far more fuel efficient then before. Modern airliners may look similar to Comet 4s but they aren't.
Modern airliners look similar to the Boeing 707. My point is the shape and speed of airliners is 1950s. I agree with you that aircraft are much more economical today. Construction materials and propulsion is highly advanced. However, as I said in my previous post, given the right sort of encouragement and political support by the British government, the UK could have been the world leaders in the technology, combining the quest for efficiency with breakthrough technology.
Awesome video - thanks for posting! From the narrators' comments, they clearly thought that there would eventually be many supersonic airliners flying all around the world. Instead, Concorde was the first and the last (for now anyway). Most people want affordable flights so that's where the market is.
As an aside, it's interesting to see how much the pre-production Concorde resembles the Tu-144.
no not really the russians nicked a set of (doctored) plans and bulid there own version.. strangely it kept crashing...
and before you say any more the russians have a long tratdition of coping planes.. the Tu4 (B-29) the blackjack( a rather poor even by the russians standards) of the B1 bomber
Nope, Blackjack is the one that is similar to a B1.
Are you suggesting the pre-production Concordes look less like the Tu-144 than the production versions? I was saying that the resemblance is more marked with the early model, which supports the idea that the Soviets may have 'borrowed' the plans early on.
At least the USSR built an SST, which is more than the Americans could manage.
thank you Shazzasloon mate for correcting me on this..(i always get the buggers mixed up..)
your right about the early versions of the TU-144 beening so alike to the concorde and the russians did "borrow" the plans...sadly for them MI5 got to hear about there intrest and let a doctored set "drop" into there hands...that is why all the early TU144's had a habit of falling out of the sky..
yes at least the russians did make a sst..(even if it was a copy of the concorde)
sadly your right ..Concord(or Concorde) never made a penny in service.. something to do with the us airlines not buying it (they where going with the boeing S.S.T cancelled in 1967) and the us puplic's hatred of this lovely plane(the old "not invented here syndrome"it was a sad day when it finally went out of service we shall NEVER see it's like again
RIP Concorde, I am truly sad I didn't get the honour of flying with you :(
