@antcowan Thanks for the reply but I don't really understand. It may catch more water than it lets through but it doesn't catch as much water as a hand with closed fingers, does it? I guess it must do because I've seen tons of swimmers with open fingers but I don't understand the physics.

Hey, it was hard to think Phelps would be able to do so before it happened. Man was just being honest. Another thing is that we do not apprichiate Thorpe for his caracter (we do so for Ghandi and mother Teresa) but for his swimming. I suppose you can swim faster than him?

So in other words, the best swimmers don't make an S-shape across their chest as they stroke underwater and pull straight down the side of the body after their arm enters the water? I've always wondered which method of stroking is considered more effective, could you please answer my question?

Simple answer: they are so darn good they have a flaw in style but still win.

The S shaped stroke is 3-D - always think of space. They turn the body, the hand path looks like S-shaped for the swimmer but when you watch a movie, you can not perceive it until you really pay attention to it.

Have your style adapted to your characteristics, including strengh of your kicks, flexibility of your arms, reach of your arms, strengh of your triceps and biceps.

A decent coach - will help you.
