He told me that there was a *lot* of dope-smoking in his unit, since the soldiers were bored sh!tless most of the time, and cannabis grew wild in the country. (Yes, he "inhaled". He said of the experience, "It was okay, but I prefer Scotch!")
You should know that war in Vietnam was not a war, it was a military conflict. It wasn't supposed to happen. These soldiers were sent pretty much to their death, fighting against an enemy who didn't give a shit if they died or not. Them getting high on weed was the best thing they could do when not engaged in warfare. It doesn't leave a hangover, so you're capable of fighting 24/7. I'd be doing the same shit if I was in their shoes.
Also, your enemy generally will not care for you. That's the point of them being your enemy. I wasn't reffering to the weed, though. They simply didn't care for the war. Not caring for the war means their only interest would be their own survival. It's hard to win a war when your soldiers don't want to fight it. They should have been educated what they were fighting for.

Soldiers may not be able to choose where they go, although now they all volunteer to give up freedom, but soldiers will always choose the way to get away for a while and be stoned on something to bear the nightmare.

@oiyabastard getting high doesn't make you dumb in some cases (as in super high me") an individual who smokes weed before an SAT test did better on weed. why? because when your medicated from cannabis you don't get as nervous. sure you might be a little slow. but to say it makes you dumb is just a flat lie. studies show that marijuana is actually good for the mind :).

@lordocow Smoking isnt good for your mind, if you smoke you get numb and lazy and it lasts a couple of days after you stop smoking so if you do it on a regular basis is really takes a toll on your assertiveness. I'm certaintly not against drugs as I do many different drugs from time to time but smoking weed e'rr day is going to change your personality (untill you stop)

@vvillem9 i agree. smoking weed everyday is a bad idea and advise anyone to do it. after a while you start getting more paranoid than high.
weed became an all-day, every day habit for me after a while. got stoned in the morning, got stoned in the evening, and got stoned at night. my tolerance skyrocketed to the point where i was smoking high grade weed and not even getting a buzz.
and your right about the personality changes too.
i recommend smoking a few times a week at the most.

Oh man I had a buddy in my block back in 65 who drafted and let me tell you when he got back he changed. At first he was a red blood clean cut white collar kid. When he got back he was a pot smoking twig with frequent trips on lucy in the sky with diamonds. The only good thing out of this war was that I got to trip out with fucking jeremy carter.

Americans in that age were real men. Now the majority of the american armed forces are a bunch of posers with more muscle than brain - not their fault, they were trained for being like that. All I see are people who never been under fire strolling with hundreds of dollars in "tactical" equipment they don't need and that is not effective.
