You're right on the short-coming of just protesting; the powers just take it as a bluff. It's not taken seriously unless it is made serious; either through 'tough measures' (which I don't condone) or some sort of strategic planning. Forming a new party, a new media outlet (TV, radio or Internet,) or speaking with/annoying elected officials on the matter are more effective. From my perspective, protesting is a good way to bring the attention of others to an important issue.

Allen, I agree, this is very effective in France, but only because they still have a sizeable workforce which is actually unionized. This puts massive pressure on the corporate elite, and not all French people are in favor of this. That's why Sarkozy got elected, BUT, and this BUT is important, he's prevented from overreaching, because real political debates are actually being aired in France...unlike here. I like your points on the side bar, as an adjunct to point #6, why not bring back the short term capital gains tax to return investing to a long term endeavor instead of a form of on line gambling? Set the rate at about 75% for under a year. And then make the remaining 25% subject to standard income tax rates.
