This song is right up there with Last Dinosaur. And NO he DID NOT mess up the guitar solo, perhaps you are a noob to music or have never seen a band live, or perhaps you are not a musician yourself, but bands (I.E. Incubus) like to "mix it up" while on stage, in order to keep things fresh. There weren't any sour notes and any that may have been off were bent into key as expected. If you want to hear the song note for note every single time with no variations then stick to the studio CD.
I agree here. This performance is simply what it means to love the pillows; Sawao's energy. Manabe's playing. The rocking out between Jun and Sawao during the rad solo. The unclear, bent awesomeness of Manabe during the solo. I came the first time I saw this, seriously.
I mean, if a live performance sounds exactly the same as the CD I'm disappointed. I WANT unique stuff done at live shows. Maybe it doesn't sound as clean or in-tune as the studio version, but that's part of the charm.
You're kind of avoiding a pretty major difference between this performance and most of their live performances; Yamanaka's voice doesn't sound like shit. This is extremely rare for their live performances, which makes this one of their best live recordings I've heard.
You think so? I've only heard people say that recently, but I've heard it a lot...
I can only think that maybe I've never noticed because, even though I distinctly listen to the vocalist's voice (since I have a nice voice fetish), I got into the pillows before I actually listened that closely to what the singer actually sounded like. I dunno, his voice has a really familiar tone to me since I've been listening to the pillows for quite a while =]
lol anyone notice HOW FREAKIN SWEATY AND TIRED THEY ARE IN THIS SONG I think that is a huge reason why manabe might of messed up a bit but i love the pillows either way!!!
they used to have thier ages on the pillows official website. im not sure now though 'cause they redid the site, but if you look under profile you get lucky or s'th.
Yeah, that's a good one. He gets a pretty nice riff in Terminal Heaven's Rock, too. Thing is, Jun is a solid bassist. His playing is just a lot simpler than some of the pillows' previous bassist, and from that comes the harsh criticism.
Yeah. Frankly, I like his playing, solid would be the word to describe it, I don't know where dingy got the idea he's known for messing up. If anything, the stuff he plays makes him just the opposite.
vocal(sawao) steps like paul weller when he was in the jam!!

His voice reminds me of Morrissey from The Smiths. Some of their early stuff sounds like The Smiths too.
But there is nooooooooooooo way in hell that The Smiths are better than The Pillows!!!
OH YEAH!!! XD

I thought the solo still sounded awesome.

I love Yamanaka's head bop thing. Everytime he does it, it looks like his hair's about to fall off.
KewlSkewl 4 years ago
I don't how people can say manabe screwed up big time on his guitar solo when i've heard FAR sloppier jimmy page solo attempts.
JJLipton 4 years ago
Yeah, Jimmy Page did have some pretty sloppy solos, but hey, hes still a good player nonetheless.

The Pillows are the sickest 3 piece band PERIOD.

Itamae 4 years ago
well if you count bassist, then 4. (But really, you can't hear him)
Hobo789 4 years ago
You can hear him quite clearly, I think. Don't ever just count out a member of a band...
Itamae 4 years ago
No, 3 is correct. Suzuki is considered a support member, and is not technically part of the band.

heres an idea genius
whats if hes just alterating how he plays it
when they played Swanky Street at the liquid room in 1997
(not on youtube i think)
the solo was whacked out so..
dizzany 4 years ago
Your theory would work except that he's basically playing the same solo he does on the album, but off-pitch. And it sounds bad.
Usually when they switch up how they play a song it still sounds decent, not like this.
He screwed up. Deal with it.

I don't think he sucks at singing at all. His voice is certainly unique, but I really like it.

it hard to play live

Jun is like a "guest" bassist to the group.
Out of respect to the past bassists, he isn't actually included with the band.
emergencyexitmud 5 years ago
i kinda feel bad for the bassist jun. he gets about 3 seconds of screen time in their live stuff and no screen time during their videos:( poor guy
EarthBoundNess 5 years ago
Jun is a "support" member. Check Wikipeadia.
NEDM77 5 years ago
at least he still just went with it... It looked like Sawao and Jun had to rock out extra hard to balance out his bad solo though :)

He didn't screw anything. YOU LIE!
Manabe is a genius, Sawao is the coolest, Jun is strong and Shinichirou is the best drummer ever.
The Pillows are the best band on this planet. Followed by the Pees of course. ;)

Well, most of the time. He's mostly used as just a standard only-play-the-eighths bassist. Biscuit Hammer comes to mind as an exception. :D

show me.
Itamae 5 years ago
lol im not saying hes bad just a lot of people at shows said he messed up
PoppinDingy 5 years ago
Jun doesn't really mess up all that often; his bass lines are just kind of unimaginative. Especially if you compare him to Kashima.
Joyeuse 5 years ago
I respect a guitarist who makes solos that he messes up when live. Shows that he's really trying.
Camio 5 years ago
Yeaa who cares the pillows are still good, Yoshiaki's solo is watever. People mess up here and there..... still pretty funny tho hahh.
FireballKid 5 years ago

Hahaha @ the solo. It definitely wasn't that bad but pretty hilarious regardless.

There might have been, but the original stream just had this one. If there's others, maybe they'll surface.
Joyeuse 5 years ago
It was ripped from a RealMedia stream. Which means that most likely, the audio IS a bit messed up. And low-quality. Because RealPlayer sucks.
Joyeuse 5 years ago
Hahaha... the solo killed the mood...
overall its pretty good, the audio seems a bit messed up though...
