I have absolutely no confidence whatsoever in Sarah Palin, and it truly blows my mind that anyone could accept her as a VP nominee when they had no idea who she was. I don't know if Governor Palin should be cheered for seeing her pregnancy through term, I don't think that's the focus here, but that she took up the labor with love and has a good attitude. Anyone whose principles are individual liberty, and understanding that capitalism is the only system that bans force from human relationships. Any principled conservative would call Falwell an agent of intolerance. True conservatism is about protecting individuals from the tyranny of the majority. The religious right is about banning the sale of alcohol on Sunday, and banning books in libraries. McCain had principles but found out that you can't win the republican nomination that way.
I agree specifically about some of Fallwell's comments, that they are intolerant and ignorant, but I disagree that the religious right is only about banning indulgences. I think Fallwell's Moral Majority was about reclaiming religious liberties from a slippery slope of licentious encroachments that had crept into our society in the 1960's. I concur, there's definitely a significant number of the Religious Right that would like to curtail individual liberties in favor of social morality. There's also social policy, where a society curtails individual liberties because collectively we know certain things would be destructive.
Our society change in the 1960's because young people were tired of the religious, old government controlling their lives. The only reason why this country survives is from progressives changing policies for the current times and not "old world" times in which Fallwell and the left think about.

Now Nixon, who did NOT get impeached, was about to get impeached because the Republican base was furious once they got over the denial stage. I had no idea Sarah Palin went back to work a few days after Trig was born. I didn't think she was the right woman to be in The White House but I'm glad she is so devoted to her family. I'm glad Glenn said what he said. Sarah Palin is a good person.

It's not a matter of how much regulation, but of the quality of the regulation. I think the lesson here is that self important congressmen and women, senators too, should learn to stop messing with the marketplace. Just like Mother Nature, you can't fool the market. It will eventually come back and in double force penalize those that mess with it. I have respect for Glenn Beck in the sense that I agree with what he says until he starts to elevate himself to the likes of Jesus, Ghandi, and Martin Luther King Jr.
It is then I lose all respect for him, because all those great men exhibited something Beck lost along the way, humility. Those men let others elevate them into the status of greatness.

With all your prattling, you fail to recognize that we know what Trisome 21 is. It's not a biology question, it's how you deal with life when you get a curve ball. Science is great and it shouldn't conflict with true religion, but it doesn't by itself build character either. You come across just as dogmatic as a religionist with your clinging embrace of the unfinished work of science for all your answers, but many have access to both science and faith in their lives.

I remember struggling in 92/93, driving past vacant offices in the heart of Silicon Valley. Maybe this congressman is a Republican because his family goes way back in the GOP or this Senator is a Democrat because he polled his home district and would come out better as a Dem. I'm familiar with Machiavelli's work and his thesis is quite adroit, but that doesn't make it so with Rush and Beck. As a matter of fact, I'm not even speaking of Rush and Beck specifically. I just used them as too highly visible examples which would be subject to a smear campaign. Rush has already been smeared in his doc shopping for meds, from which I believe he was acquitted. I have absolutely no confidence whatsoever in Sarah Palin, and it truly blows my mind that anyone could accept her as a VP nominee when they had no idea who she was. Her performance on live interviews was downright frightening when it came to Supreme Court cases, not to mention her knowledge of foreign policy. It was like watching George W. Bush run for president all over again; albeit Palin is by FAR more articulate than George W. Bush; which isn't saying much.

There's only one other spot in Article I where VP is mentioned in and it states that if the VP is absent or executing the (executive) Office of President, at that time the Senate shall establish a President of the Senate pro tempore (for a time, temporarily). As for "supporting the policies of president" as Matthews put it, there is no such language and at one time, the VP used to be the second runner up in the election, so it's historically significant that the VP would NOT be so constrained.

Obama is socially attractive (not meaning social policies, but demeanor and charisma) and I know a lot of conservatives that became interested in O once McCain took the lead in the GOP primaries. It was his economic comment of "spreading the wealth" that scared the tar out of anyone who isn't on the government dole. That's what scares most people now. I would that you were right about the economy, but there's only one way for a government to fix an economy and that's by decentralizing, incentivizing, and getting the hell out of the way so that the industries and their workers can get back to creating wealth. Moving money around and starting/stopping government programs doesn't generate wealth anymore than a lottery. It does a good job at redistributing wealth though... Any life you see in our economy right now is just the "dead cat bounce".

First, a good campaign does not a good president make (Nixon), but agreed, BHO ran a good one. Second, calling Joe a loser doesn't make it so, but frankly, in a few years we'll ALL feel like losers. Another point, is that bringing taxes back to "normal" has no meaning. In the Founding Fathers' vision of the Republic, government was to be small without a heavy tax burden. I don't know if Governor Palin should be cheered for seeing her pregnancy through term, I don't think that's the focus here, but that she took up the labor with love and has a good attitude. Anyone whose principles are individual liberty, and understanding that capitalism is the only system that bans force from human relationships. Any principled conservative would call Falwell an agent of intolerance. True conservatism is about protecting individuals from the tyranny of the majority. The religious right is about banning the sale of alcohol on Sunday, and banning books in libraries. McCain had principles but found out that you can't win the republican nomination that way.

I agree specifically about some of Fallwell's comments, that they are intolerant and ignorant, but I disagree that the religious right is only about banning indulgences. I think Fallwell's Moral Majority was about reclaiming religious liberties from a slippery slope of licentious encroachments that had crept into our society in the 1960's. The liberal media was quick to vilify and paint Palin as a religious wacko, but the evidence is to the contrary, that she's pretty normal with a few quirks.

I concur, there's definitely a significant number of the Religious Right that would like to curtail individual liberties in favor of social morality. There's a line somewhere to be drawn - a society has to somehow develop a set of commonly espoused values, but it has to establish a balance where my liberties and beliefs don't impinge on yours and visa versa. There's also social policy, where a society curtails individual liberties because collectively we know certain things would be destructive.

Now Nixon, who did NOT get impeached, was about to get impeached because the Republican base was furious once they got over the denial stage. That's why in spite of both being severely scrutinized, the political outcome was so much worse for Nixon, his voter base (and the voter base of Republicans in Congress) wouldn't stand for what he had done.

I think the lesson here is that self important congressmen and women, senators too, should learn to stop messing with the marketplace. Just like Mother Nature, you can't fool the market. Well I'd suggest that you consider that the oppression of the weak by the powerful is a broader plight and the blacks in America are not the only to suffer. My ancestors were serfs in the Caucasuses (hint - I'm a true "caucasian"). It's certainly not unreasonable that we should agree on some points. I don't know if I'd call a racially motivated niche group a "special interest group". That's just a loaded PC term. But of course they exist and probably always will. They don't have much weight in today's political scene since Stetson Kennedy took down the KKK. Where we might not disagree or aren't seeing eye-to-eye is the issue of perpetual victimhood. I see "minority victimhood groups" as the special interests.

We didn't need a senator as GOP candidate, but a real leader who had some skills running something more than an "Elect Me" committee. Bloomberg, Romney, Forbes, come to mind. Palin, if she can prove herself in Alaska with falling Crude prices should be a good 2012 candidate.

The initial reaction was positive, but as people listened to those horrible, cringe-inducing interviews and learned more about her, more people began to turn against her. It's obvious that she's ill-prepared to be VP. And apparently it's about to get worse. According to some of Palin's Republican advisors, Palin's gone "rogue" and won't listen to anyone.

Thanks for chiming in. I enjoyed some intelligent and thought provoking comments. It's never just plain black and white, is it. As for presidential politics, I'm withholding my vote - neither McCain nor Obama deserve my vote. Maybe I'll write in Ron Paul or Ralph Nader. They're a bit dull and monotonous, but I sense either one has more integrity. Actually at this point, I hope Obama wins so that when the socialism Bush brought us into bears fruit, we can blame the Dems:)

Hmmm. Actually, given a choice between the enviro-nazi Al "Chicken Little" Gore, or John "Lurch" Kerry, I'd take Bush. McCain can't seem to hold any position too well for too long, and in spite of his service to his country, I don't know he could manage our current mess. I don't think Obama can either, but if the nation's going to go down the toilet, I'd rather it be on the Dems' watch. Ron Paul is probably the only one that really understands the Constitution that's got his name on the ballot.

Obama was one of those community organizers, teaching and rallying ACORN to pressure Chicago banks to lend to anyone regardless of income and means under the pretense of racial inequality. Amazing how much of the current mess started in Chicago. Of course, there's lots of blame to pass around for Dodd and Frank, and a dozen other Democrats, but when the rubber hit the road, I think you have to bundle up all those in both Senate (inc. McCain) and the House who voted for the bailout bill.

Well, I don't care much for Bernstein, so some day you'll need to summarize the plot line for me, but suffice it to say I trust neither party, particularly after the watching them these last two weeks stuffing a bailout bill down the throat of Congress, first by the President and then by the Senate, and then only after stuffing the bill full of what can be only be called lobbyist bribes. So, my mind's a bit focused on the financial mess right now... as for the war, I blame Hussein.
