This is an interesting document. People talk about how short Callas's career was. But Tebaldi's peak was alarmingly short, esp in relation to how long she performed. I don't think it was much later than this that she started to have difficulty hitting the top notes head on.
@ChristophePhilippe that is not correct, Tebaldi had considerably longer staying power than Callas and had a relatively long career, certainly longer than Callas's. Tebaldi may have peaked in the 50's, but she started her career early in the 1940s and sang well into the 1970s. She had some vocal problems, but for the most part still sang very well until she retired.
I don't like Tebaldi generally. Her voice is cold and she is quite rude, insensitive in singing. I also do not find her interpretations very intelligent. BUT... this is HER aria!

ADRIANA was a role Tebaldi particularly loved and in 1955 she was in peak vocal form. I saw her do this in 1968/1969 with Corelli. Two huge voices and 2 beautiful people on stage. Tebaldi opened the Metropolitan season that year with ADRIANA. Callas came to the performance.

E' la percezione che si ha all'ascolto -ed è un chiaro pregio- perché il timbro della Tebaldi è assolutamente omogeneo e quello della Callas frastagliato, al punto da dover essere più marcato sui centri, zona per lei particolarmente ostica. Si legga al proposito il Celletti. Il paragone Tebaldi Callas sulla Lecouvreur non è pensabile.

Probabilmente, anzi certamente, perché non li ho espressi in maniera consona; continui pure ad ascoltare la Callas ed i suoi centri. Più che altro io mi documenterei su che cosa significhi, in termini di tecnica, la naturalezza nell'arte.... ma non le faccio più perdere tempo (mica poi lo perdessi anche io...) saluti.

The purest soprano i have ever heard.
Her high notes are incomparable - and insuperable.
I first heard this opera (a recording) when I was eleven.
Ever since this aria - in Tebaldi's rendition - remains one of my favourites.
