  • ...simply music... very beautiful sound. I like p51's sound too

  • Sounds like music to me!!

  • There is music in this clip... can't you hear it?!

  • @rhwerkman Yes I hear V12 Merlins.

  • i wish i was there to hear that!

another great sound is the "vulcan bomber"

  • Merlin great series. Didn't know he made engines too. Only joking. Yes the RR Merlin engine's sound was unique. Nice to have a airoplane video without music. Thanks'

  • Sweetest music on u tube, the hurricane wing waggle at 1.08 gives me goose pimples.

  • @catey62 I fully agree with you. This video has music from start to finish - the sound of the engines!!!

  • how a much ride?

  • No music?..aaahhh...but it is...and so sweet too :-)

  • it's funny how the video is titled "without music" even though it still sounds like music to me :P

  • Music to my ears, wonderful video.

  • Hurricane !!!!

  • Ooo Yeah--Uh Huh! Cool!!

  • Fuck this shit I'm moving to England if it means I get to see these fly at least once in a while.

  • my eyes are wet...

  • Thats a great SOUND should be No 1

  • @airanorak1

    It is.

  • thats gotta be one of the best jobs in the world!

  • Great sound/no music.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Imagine 1:00 in 3D... or in real life XD

  • The best sounding engine in the world

  • Nothing beats that sound. That sounds carries one incredible History.

  • Would pay a lot to have half an hour in a Spitfire - just once!

  • 11 people are deaf :(

  • That Merlin just purrs. :)

  • Without the HURRICANE there would have been no spitfires, we would have been still using the swordfish or something even cheap. and remember the government didn't even fund the early production costs of the hurricane; thank fully a young female ex actress did................Its a funny world as us Brits love to drive around in Messerschmitt now! LOL

  • the hurricane is the ugly sister of the supermodel woman , the spitfire , lol. both are amazing aeroplanes & thanks for the upload Wonkabar :-)

  • As a kid,the Spitfire was my favourite & you could always recognize it because the back of the wings were rounded & the H urricanes were straight. We could always recognize the German bombers even at night because of the steady drone of their engines.

  • It's a thing of utter beauty. I'm in awe watching a simple video of this beautiful machine. Anyone who witnesses this old war bird in flight must feel emotional - be it exhilaration, raw excitement or just jaw dropping speechlessness in what they're seeing. Anyone that doesn't 'feel it' has to be brain dead, catatonic. Anyways, thanks Wonkabar for sharing the experience; this gem. You're a champ.

  • @taxid3rmy Glad you liked it, the best thing about warbirds is when they do something unexpected, and when that Hurricane swooped down low, and flew over the folks on the hilltop that was a special moment.

  • @Wonkabar007

    Wow!.

  • @taxid3rmy ....The Sound of Freedom

  • @F8F77 ... and a beautiful sound indeed :D

  • @taxid3rmy

well is certain that the spit is the prettiest aircraft that has ever been made - and the poor old hurricane was a stunner as well -the noise of the big merlin rolls royce is gorgeous!!

  • @buttsyrc8 .. yes, they are both beautiful, but history actually shows the Hurricane carried most of the workload and, consequently, achieved the majority of kills (especially in the pivotal Battle of Britain). But only a cynic would disparage the contributions of the Spitfire considering it's lesser, overall deployment (versus the Hurricane) throughout much of WWII - which was by strategic choice by RAF's Fighter Command (& War Ministry) ... and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

  • @taxid3rmy

I guess a few NZ pilots flew these birds but do not know the history of it!

Am interested in foreign pilots and links.

    Ta

  • @buttsyrc8 .. yes, there was a very strong contribution, during WWII, of Kiwi fighter pilots. Also, Sir Keith Park was Chief of Fighter Command, at the time - and history shows that you'll find no greater New Zealand contributor, than Park, to the spectacular record of the RAF.

  • @taxid3rmy

Thanks will be having a look at Mr Park - and the stunning forces from all Countries

  • @buttsyrc8 .. actually, my previous post is a little misleading: although he did eventually achieve the Office of Air Chief Marshal (ACM) for Fighter Command (post-war), he was Air Vice Marshal (AVM) for the most of WWII. Dowding was active ACM - Fighter Command, for the Battle of Britain. (As a side line, you might like to research "Bomber Harris" - who was ACM for RAF Bomber Command for much of WWII. He was Dowding's counterpart at RAF HQ).

  • @taxid3rmy Merlins are pure music, though I have to say that Griffon whispers don't mess with me, don't mess with me.............Am Baaaaaad..........

  • Who in their right mind would dislike your video. Both planes sound great. Stunning low level passes and great parting shot of the lighthouse at Beachy Head. Both planes are "living" tributes to the brave souls who fought for Great Britain, her commonwealth and beyond. Maybe they were ten ex Luftwaffe pilots who dislike this but I imagine they were probably left wing do gooders on anti depressants. Lighten up and love Great things British!

  • you should listen to the napier sabre engine in the hawker typhoon

  • 10 luftwaffe pilots disliked this

  • @wgshooter lol

  • The Hurricane was a workhorse, the Spitfire lifted your spirit. Did then, does now

  • how can anyone dislike this???

  • The very best sound that man has ever made, ah the Rolls Royce Merlin!

  • The very best sound that has ever made, ah the Rolls Royce Merlin!

  • The sound of those Merlins gives me goose-bumps . . . . Simply awesome

  • Spitfire and Hurricane in their natural environment......the skies over southern England.

  • "Only after it got the merlin engine... "

So the supercharger is what gave it/&/or the Merlin engine the distinctive sound ?

  • Hands down best sounding engine ever made. So much so, that I named my business after it.

  • No offence to English people but the P-51 was better.

  • @2ndLtSpence Only after it got the merlin engine... during development with the non supercharged allison it was a slug at higher altitude...

  • @danosburn80 Who cares? Shelby Cobra my favorite car ever is really a AC ace with a Big Ford 427 in it. It was a slow car that would have been Forgotten if it wasn't For the Powerful American V8. Same with the P-51 except the other way around American plane with British Engine. The way I look at it is when you put those two countries minds together you have a deadly concoction

  • Besser würden die briten Allison amerikanischen motoren, um sie gelegt habe, ho, ho, hooo !...

  • Imagine having one in a car and driving it 5000RPM through a tunnel - Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

  • ONLY DESIGN FAULT IS THE FULL TANK in a steap dive the engine cuts out unless you roll it over on its back first befor diving, gravity system soon replaced by a fuel pump vacum system fixing the problem. last thing you want to do is stall with a 109 on your tail. THIS IS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM

  • Thank you Thank you Thank you for the no music!!!

  • Great sounds. Nobody should ever put music over the merlin engine. I don`t care if it`s the battle of Britain, the dambusters, or god save the queen. The engines are music in themselves.

    Thanks

  • Spitfire and Hurricane were a great double act. The Spitfires kept the escorting 109s tangled up while the Hurricanes got on with the job of shooting down the bombers.

  • 10 people need some heart and soul.

    Two superb aircraft.

It is said that it was the Hurricane that truly was machine that enabled the Allies to win the war but it helped that the opposition mistook them for Spitfires..

There will always be something special about those Merlin engines.

  • I just got buzzed by a P51 today doing a fly-by for a drag racing event. What a sound...

  • The P51 was better in every way, but only once they put the Merlin engine in it.

  • The Hurri at 1:06, ...very nice.

  • What was the occasion??

  • i remember listening to the merlin for the first time it was a p-51 at baseball practice and so my friend made a bet, if i caught the next ball he would by me one i caught it, he still owes me

  • I wanna buy the soundtrack.

  • sweet sound. Well done on adding no music. Thanks for posting!

  • Whenever an old German hears this, he is met with a sudden urge to hide under the kitchen table.

  • @BINGFRYSRDUN not the idea the war ended 76 years ago I am sure they enjoy the noise as much as anyone is just a lovely noise

  • Comment removed

  • @terry123416 I didn't get it. Does your father recognize the sound of the Spitfire like it was a german fighter?

  • THANK YOU so much for not polluting this with music!

  • It says "no music". That's not right.

  • Thats the best sound ever. I get shivers up my back when I hear that awesome sound!

  • i would give anytihng to sit in the cockpit of a spitfire or hurricane wish there were more flying

  • The pilot "wing" waved to the audience , that just gave me goose bumps : )

Now think like this--> one plane.that sound = goosebumps!

1942-1945 ---> 12 + 15 planes in a crazy doog fight so close to the ground with all hell breaking loose.. The sound if you have stood on those cliffs then and listen to the sound <3.

And i want to send out an omcahe (spelling?) to the pilots under that period , when i see this movies, when i see how fast those old planes go, you were truly the gods of the sky!.

  • Get a 109 in there for some action shots !

  • This and the V16 BRM are the best sounding engines ever

  • I was in my garden the other morning, pottering around as you do, when I heard a distant sound. I knew what it was, it was a Rolls Royce Merlin. When you hear that sound, you just kind of stop doing things and look up. Two Spitfires flew over at around 500 feet against a clear blue sky. I just kept watching until they were gone, I just kept watching.

  • @drongo41 you lucky bugger...

  • Ladies and Gentlemen, please stand for the National Anthem of GREAT Britain.

  • I take it that the only people that dislike this video are german ss?????

  • In oreder to do the Spitfire Justice...check out "Ronald Berry" a front line fighter ace, 400 front line missions and never shot down. He was chosen as "one of the few" who carried Churchills coffin. He started as a hobby flyer and ended up as Air chief Marshall...A real Hero, Battle of Britain vet, Operation torch teaching the yanks how to be a fighter pilot, yes the Aircraft where superb...but the pilots where incredible.

  • 10 people need to get their ears and eyes tested, and they might want to dive into British history while they're at it and then think about disliking this video!

Long live the BBMF whose Spitfire and Hurricane made this video what it is!!

  • Forgive the cliche, but it seems 10 people are Bf-109 pilots!

  • Who needs music when you have the sweet symphony created by a merlin engine at speed , nothing better. It makes the hair on my neck stand up every time i hear it.

  • Watching and listening to this video transports us back to the summer of 1940, when the skies of the south of England must have been filled with the symphony of hundreds of Merlin engines.

We envy those that lived then, who witnessed, and heard, those amazing sights of history...

  • It's actually a Hurricane....

  • the spitfire is an insane piece of kit, possibly the greatest aeroplane ever made, but i will always be a sucker for the hurricane. just has something about it, maybe it's because i'm english and cheer for the underdog, but it just looks better and sounds better to me

  • @engasal I think the Hurricane got more kills than the Spitfire in WW2.

  • @Wonkabar007 Thats because there were more of them.

  • @Wonkabar007 fair point

  • @Wonkabar007 You are right The hurricane got the tail end of the credit over the very sexy Spitfire. But as Chuck Yeager once said it's 80% pilot 20 % plane.

  • @Wonkabar007 you woul be right there almost 3-1

  • Listen to that MUSIC coming from those engines

  • @Wonkabar007 Pretty sure your right, there were roughly 3 hurricanes for every spitfire.

  • @Wonkabar007 Not in WW2, but certainly the Battle of Britain. It got 66% of ALL kills in that.

  • @sthill1993 The reason the Hurricane got more kills in Battle of Britain was that they mainly engaged the slower bombers as they were no match for the faster German fighters this was left to the Spifires which were more evenly matched

  • @robbiwan43 Nah, they shot down more fighters and bombers, simply because there were twice as many Hurricanes as Spitfires. They weren't completely outclasssed by the German fighters, it could very very easily out-turn them and it had concentrated firepower.

  • @robbiwan43 Hurricanes were still able to fight against Bf-109s, they were stable gun platforms and they could out-turn the Bf-109 and the Spitfire. For that they were 30mph slower.

  • @Wonkabar007 Double the number was there not? Also, Hurricanes went for the sitting ducks, Spitfires had the harder job ;) Love them both though!

  • @Wonkabar007 The Spitfire got most kills by any UK plane in WW2. Hurricanes scored more during the Battle of Britain with 57% to the Spitfires 43%. However, Spitfires made up only 38% of the fighter strength compared to 62% for Hurricanes which gives the Spitfire a better kill ratio for the number of fighters. The Hurry was a great plane to have during the Battle of Britain but the Spitfire gave us the edge we needed to give Gerry a good kicking.

  • @FrancoHitlini you do know that the hurricane became a better tank buster/fighter bomber than the spit, could fly off poorer airfields, and was a great stable gun platform. Not bad for an oldie.

  • @18tangles I would never criticise the Hurricane. It was coming to the realistic end to its service as a front line fighter by 1943 but that is no discredit to its service record.

  • @FrancoHitlini I would never criticise the Hurricane for what it did. By 1943 it was coming to the realistic end of it's life but that is no discredit to it's in service record.

  • @Wonkabar007 The Hurricane was inferior to the Bf 109 so was used to tackle the Bombers whilst the Spitfire was able to get the better of the 109 so were used to keep them away from the Hurricanes while they got on with intercepting the Bombers. So you're right the Hurricanes downed more Luftwaffe Aircraft during the Battle of Briatin than the Spitfire. Also the Hurricane being of a simple design was easier and quicker to repair.

  • @Wonkabar007 no just in battle of britain

spitfire was a fighter throught out the war huricane was soldiering on in fighter bomber role

  • @Wonkabar007

    More built. Both Merlins though.

  • @Wonkabar007 because the Hurricane was already fightin' when the Spitfire went into production

  • @chpman2013 Actually both the Hurricane and the Spitfire went into production before the war. The Hurricane entered service in 1937 and the Spitfire in mid 1938. So either were fighting before the other

  • @TopGunSGA well I heard that the spitfire was more complex to build than the hurricane

  • @chpman2013 Yeah it took longer to build a Spitfire as opposed to a Hurricane. But both planes were available at the star of the war.

  • @Wonkabar007 True, but the hawker was in service much longer than the spitfire.

  • @NiceSteeZe Not really. Yes it entered service before the Spitfire, but the the Spit remained in service with the RAF until the mid 50s by which time the Hurricane was withdrawn from service.

  • @engasal you a brit

  • @engasal ... people will, no doubt, haggle on " the greatest aeroplane ever made " bit ... but there's no arguing: the Spitfire is the single-most beautiful, fighting bird ever constructed.

  • What an absolutely BADASS sound!

  • The sound of Freedom > Rolls Royce Merlin V12

  • I get goose bumps of this video:)

  • 0:54 lucky people :D

  • awesome, totally awesome

  • what a sounds, sends shivers down my spine.

  • hey can you guys do me a favor and check out my channel (the tags wont work on my vids)

  • Great plane. 4 .303 machine guns just way too weak and Spitfire very susceptible to destruction from ground fire. P-51 Mustang with 6 .50 caliber machine guns, tougher frame, and longer range definitely the best plane of WW2.........once it had the Rolls Royce Merlin engine of course!!! ;-)

  • @realityright No Spitfire or Hurricane were armed with just 4 .303, the Mk I of both were armed with 8 .303. Both Hurricanes in this video as Mk IIc which had 4 20mm cannons (although one of them repersents a Mk I and therefore doesn't have the 20mms). The later Spitfire (from the Mk V) had 2 20mms AND 4 .303, although some Mk IXs and most Mk XVIs had the 'E' type wing which had 2 20mms and 2 .50s

  • @TopGunSGA First off, 20mm cannon installed in Spitfires were one of the least reliable armaments ever installed in an airframe. It was 2, not 4. The Hispano 20mm cannon were a disaster. Second, you are out of your mind on 8 .303 machine guns. Your math is way off. There were 4 .303s. The 6 .50 caliber machine guns in the P-51 Mustang were a much better armament.

  • @realityright .. Spitfire armament.

    Mk IA & Mk IIA - 8 x .303" Browning machine guns.

Mk VB, Mk VI, Mk VIII - 2 x 20mm Hispano II cannons + 4 x .303" Browning machine guns.

Then depending on engine & wing variant..

    Mk IXe - 2 x 20mm Hispano II cannons + 2 x 0.50 cal Browning M2 machine guns.

    Mk XII - 2 x 20mm Hispano II cannons + 4 x .303" Browning machine guns.

    Mk XIVe - 2 x 20mm Hispano II cannons + 2 x 0.50 cal Browning M2 machine guns.

    Mk 24 - 4 x 20mm Hispano V cannons.

  • @hackenbush23 Don't forget that some Mk Vcs had 4x20mm cannons

  • @realityright

It's strange that you can be so convinced you are right when you are, in fact, wrong. You are partially correct that the first cannon installed on Mk II Spitfires in 1940 (I think 19 Squadron aircraft?) were unreliable. So much so that the pilots wanted to return to the standard eight gun Mk Is and Mk IIs, but these problems were soon sorted out and the Mk V had a two cannon, four machine gun armament. With regards the Mustang, Americans and Britons will never agree on that!

  • @alexanderbeetle Also to complement hackenbush23's Spitfire armament table, here's one on the Hurricane armament

Mk Ia & IIa - 8x .303 Browning machine guns.

    Mk IIb - 12x .303 Browning machine guns, plus it could carry either 2 x 250lb or 2 x 500lb bombs

Mk IIc - 4x 20mm cannons, plus could carry bombs

Mk IId - 2x 40mm cannons and 2x .303 Browning machine guns (used to aim the big guns)

    Mk IV - 250lb/500lb bombs, 2 40 mm cannons, or 8 RP-3 rockets. 2x 303 for aiming

  • @realityright If you think the 6 50s in the P-51 was good, what about the 8 50s in the P-47?

  • @TopGunSGA ya ,, i was shocked yrs ago ,when i read that the spitfire had 303s ,,,, i had a 303 enfield and i would never want that round for my fighter aircraft not enough fps

  • Bang on !

  • the flyby at 0:56 is great..

  • The sound of angel wings.

  • Who needs the Typhoon, or the Tornado...We've got these!

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • ADAGADAGADAGADAGA

  • THANK YOU !!!!!!

  • Still looks beautiful--always will.

  • Merlin...ahhhh.

  • Funny-My volume just kept climbing up while watching this over and over.i still have no idea why?

  • Who could tire of that noise--beautiful.

  • Reminds me when i was a kid in the late'40s. Theplanes would come over open field at the childrens home in St Paul Mn and tip t heir wings and wave at us kids. We could see their faces. I bet it did as much for the pilots as it did for us kids. I always wantedto meet one of them and tell him how much it ment to me. they are probably all gone now but not in my heart.

  • there is music instruments used merlin v-12

  • 9 people have chinese speakers!

  • i'm out to the driveway to smash my German car up

  • *sighs* after you hear the sweet sound of a Merlin once, you remember that sound for LIFE.

The most perfect, beautiful sounding engine in the world, ever. I get goose pimples every time

  • The flypast at 0:56 is awesome, love that sound :P Reminds me of summertimes in my youth back in the days of the West Malling airshows.

  • Comment removed

  • 9 people must be deaf...

  • Tht would be totally awesome. My fav plane by a long shot. Correct me if I'm wrong but the faint whistling heard on the later models is the super charger?

  • Wonderful engine sound..... Imagine the ammo magazines being filled with blanks and the pilot letting the machine guns rip for a short burst as he passes the crowd. I wonder if this has ever been done at an air show. Anybody know?

  • @Mr6292 Unlikely, there would be a lot of health and saftey forms for that, and i doubt any planes have guns that could fire rounds (fully automatic weapons require a lot of licences, and you'd have to have a proper gun to get it working, which could fire live rounds). Also, I'm not 100% on the ejection method for the guns in the wing. I think they have a bag to catch the spent rounds, but if not they could be dumped out of the plane which would be falling brass on the crowd - meaning no go.

  • @TRUExSIGHTS Yes, fair points all round, but I do wonder if any other countries, with different H&S Regulations and semi-automatic weapons regulations might have allowed something like this in the past. The spent casings issue can be resolved by working out the maximum distances casings land, when the aircraft flies in a straight line. Add a margin for safety and just maybe....but, like you, I reckon it will be a no go too. Cheers!

  • @Mr6292 That distance about the casings is soooo variable it would be a liability. You would have to fly infront of the crowd, not over in that case. Some countries may allow it, most likely the USA (if the parts existed) but as far as i know the weapons are very hard to locate, let alone find in a flying plane thats capable of holding the weapons, and fire them. There's probably a huge number of legalities involved. I hope it will happen though one day, would be amazing.

  • @TRUExSIGHTS Sadly, I was clutching at straws with that one to be honest. Ok, well thanks for replying and, yes, let´s keep hoping!

  • 9 Germans dislike this video!

  • beautiful, absolute legends! nuff said.

  • the people who disliked this must be German ?....... No better sounding or looking aircraft yet :)

  • Good...I just want to hear the plane NOT music!! Thanks.

  • I have just watched this video while simoultaneously listening to 'Jerusalem'. I am not ashamed to admit that it has brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. Rule Britannia.

  • The first aircraft is a Hurricane

  • I have the BEST sound pollution ever where I live. A duel cockpit spitfire, an aston martin vanquish and a street full of classic cars. Perfect

  • @sootyferrari65 I am officially green with envy
