  • Du Haust seems to translate in English as 'You live'

  • I found a very good book compiled by a crew member of the Scharnhorst. He was an avid photographer and his wealth of pictures is in the book.Books title: BATTLESHIP SCHARNHORST

    THE CREW PHOTO ALBUM

    BY Randall S. Shoker.

  • @egbertvos1 Hi, some time ago I purchased very good plans of the Prinz Eugen from a German company and took them to a model boat club meeting where I met a US sailor who sailed the Prinz to New York. She was a beautiful ship, quite similar in silhouette to the Bismarck. I have 200 scale models of them both and sail them in formation on a local pond, sometime together with the Graf Zeppelin as a carrier group.

    Kind regards from Dallas

  • шарнхорст легенда

  • It was one good-looking ship. German's finest engineering.

  • If you use Google earth you can go to Kristiensand in Norway where you can still see the massive gun emplacements including the secondary armament of the Sharnhorst - one huge gun still exists - today the whole area is a museum. hard to find but interesting.

  • @itsmepaul57 Those guns actually belong to her sister ship when she was heavily damaged in the air raid that lead to her being retired to be rebuilt. Still cool to see them around though.

  • @itsmepaul57 How did the secondary armament of the Scharnhorst get to Kristiansand when she was sunk at sea? And what is this " Du Haust by Rammestien"?

The group is called Rammstein, the song Du hasst mich.

  • @chloe7829 Du Haust appears to translate as 'You Live' from German. I was told that the Scharnhorst was sunk before these guns - which were to be fitted as an upgrade - could be fitted.

  • @itsmepaul57 it means You hate

  • FANTASTIC to see all these old 'Slachtshiffs' they were very hi-tech for their day - but it didn't save them - all except Prinze Eugen still upside down in kwajaline atoll.

  • @itsmepaul57

hey she survived 2 atomic blasts :) :) with negligable damage :D

  • Nice ship, have to say the NAZI's built some elegant designs however the Scharnhorst was underarmed, had she recevied those 15" guns planned in the rebuild that was due to take place in 43 but cancelled she would have been far more formidable but still not the equal of Duke of York.

  • @TheCharlie359

Of course Scharnhorst isn't equal to DoY ,lol

DoY = KG5 class Battleship (RN terminology)

Scharnhorst = Fast Battlecruiser (RN terminology) , probably the fastest capital ship in the WW2 Atlantic war.

Its like comparing Bismarck with Hood. Hood was very much older though.

  • das war eine sehr elegante bauweise von schiffen,

  • to make things easy on the dif between the tallest mast is the key for id between these to ships gn is frt shr is aft.

  • The Scharnhorst is a beauty

    RIP

  • Scharnhorst as built had them and then both ships where modified with their Atlantic clipper bow which removed the dual anchors from on side (hold over from WW1 thinking). Your confusing their atlantic bow with the as build straight stems and low forecastle appearances.

  • Yes that photo was taken shortly after Scharnhorst was modified and before Gneisenau was taken in for modifications. If you also notice Schanhorst hasn't under gone her final mods which include the relocation of her mast off her funnel.

  • These are to the same ship, they are pre-atlantic bow modification and afterwards. Both ships where built straight stemed and then upgrades later.

  • Incorrect, the photos are all of Scharnhorst. The sisters were identical until later modifications to S had her gain a main mast that was not attached to her funnel.

  • @Anon67892

    That sounds really dirty.

  • love the vid,,, scharnhorst has allways been my fave german ship.... could anyone tell me please... what is the english translation for Scharnhorst??

  • It don't translate into anything it was actually a Prussian Field Marshall if I remember right.

  • @lonelywolf1966 : it was named for Gerhardt Herman Wolfgang David von Scharnhorst, my great, great, great, great grandfather: Prussian general who was famous for promoting the idea of a 'peoples' army at a time monarchies kept small professional armies.

  • @epiphanyvideoprod Congratulations, you have some very illustrious ancestry. My family also goes back a few centuries, to the siege of Valletta by Suleiman II and prior to that to the time of Charles Martell. Isn't history fascinating?

  • Sexiest warship ever :)

  • nice

  • Scharnhorst was a famous World War II capital ship, the lead of her class, referred to as either a battleship or a battlecruiser[8] of the German Kriegsmarine. "'Lucky' Scharnhorst, as she was known in Germany, was a focus for national pride

  • schanhorst was a great war ship

  • The Iowa -class has a problem in hevy sea's cause the construktion must go throu the Panama-canal!

Against the HMS Vanguard in a maöver after war has the Iowa no chance!

Please forgif me mi silly english.

  • 1 Scharnhorst-Class = a year's production of Tiger tanks.

  • Tiger Tanks couldn't destroy enemy supply convoys and tie up thousands of tons of military assets like they did.

  • What I meant to say was that the steel used in one Scharnhorst battleship can manufacture a year's output of TIGER tanks....say '675 Tiger tanks'

  • auf das schiff wurden 3000 granaten und 55 torpedos abgeschossen...

  • why on earth would you say the rammstein song does not promote nazism?....every rammstein fan knows the band are not nazis or have any leaninhs that way whatsoever.

  • What are you talking about? I never said anything about the song, I said the slide show is not intended to promote Nazism being the subject is the ship itslef NOT the government that built it.

  • They ran because they where under orders to avoid unwanted damage. They where to target England's supply lines. People always forget that fact assuming the fleet was built with the intention of going head to head like the out of date fleet battles of WW1.

  • think you mean prinz eugen

  • Ein Traumschiff !!!

  • Great video.

P.S. I love the Music choice!

  • Do you need to have this stupid music on these montages ?

  • Your taste of music is your choose, youtube does have a silence button if you dont want to hear the music. Most ppl find it more entertaining to have sound to a slide show.

  • not true ww1 ships britain used suffered badly, the most successful warship of ww2 was HMS Warspite

  • And what chance would it have against Britain's 20? (Queen Elisabeth, Revenge and King George V classes 5 ships each, 2 x Nelson class, 2 x Rodney Class and the Hood). Germans knew well they could never mach the British surface fleet and hence did what they could with the submarines.

  • You forget two things. First that number of warships was SCATTERED to defend a globe spanning empire, with ships in the Pacific and Med and Indain Oceans. That was why Britian responded with every avalible ship they had in the area to deal with Bismarck, including leaving a Convoy with out BB protection. 2nd S and G as well as B and T where intended as commerce raiders, the Z plan which wasnt finished was what was intended to take on the Royal Navy.

  • The purpose of the Z plan was to match the current strength of the Royal navy, but by the time it was to be fulfilled the British would have enlarged their Navy again. As for the scattered fleet even a third of the Royal Navy would have been more than enough to reprise WW1 situation + let us not forget other Allied navies. All the German large surface ships were essentially a waste of resources in retrospective (as was the whole war - German ambitions were way greater than their potential).

  • Yah building absolutley no surface ships would be a good idea. Idiot.

  • Britian couldnt afford to, they where going bankrupt with their military build up as it was(lead to the post war fall of the empire).Brits also had a bad habit of either bunching up their ships in hunter killer groups"or scattering them to the winds to cover all threats at once. The WW1 ships the Biritsh used suffered badly through out the war with their age, battle damage etc & the Nelsons where next to useless except for convoy work, only reason Rodney hurt Bismarck was bismarck couldnt run.

  • beautiful ship!!!

  • Wow. Thanx for the views people. This video was thrown togther while I was waiting for Lost to start in fifteen minutes and yet its my most viewed one. Thx again.

  • Thank you guy!! Great vid!

  • It's wonderfully sleek and elegant, a departure from the somewhat brutish kriegsmarine designs. My favourite WW2 ship, save possibly the Yamato!

  • hallo super schiff hier war mein vater drauf

  • Scharnhorst looked the part, though her engines were too unreliable, and she really needed to have the 15 inch guns instead of the 11 inchers, as was intended when the heavier weapon became available.

  • for what 15 inches? this warship was constructed for destroy convoys (11 inch is enough), not a fight with another warships;. germans naval doctrine base to fight on submarine ships, that it.

  • The original idea for these two ships was that they would be armed with six 15 inch guns. Unfortunately these guns weren't available at the time, so eleven inch weapons were fitted as a temporary stopgap until the larger guns were ready. The outbreak of the war prevented this from happening.

  • nice ship and nice video!

Btw i´m building a 1:125 scale model of her at the moment.

  • How far along are you? I picked up a large wood model of the Scharnhorst a few years ago. It is 5 - 5 1/2 feet long and is RC. I just now getting ready to start work on her.

  • i just took the fiberglass hull out of the mould a week ago and it needs finishing and paint. I also have 3 main turrets ready and few cabins aswell. Good luck on your build!!

  • I've always thought the KMS Scharnhorst was a prettier ship than the Bismarck. She was a much sleeker design that kinda resembles an Iowa Class. I have a small 4 inch model of her from the Axis&Allies game sitting on top of my computer tower.

  • correct, was a beautiful :) the best warship in WWII

  • No the Iowa outclassed it in just about every way. It was faster, better armored, had 16 inch guns as opposed to the tiny 11 inch guns of the Scharnhorst.

  • Your comparing lemons to limes. The ships where built with different mission profiles in mind, to different "limitations" and almost ten years difference.

  • Maybe but you cant call it the best ship of the entire war.

  • Nobody has claimed them to be the best, but then again the Iowas arent proven either considering they never where engaged by their own kind. T

  • The scharnhorst was a pocket battleship not a full fledged battleship; apples to apples the Bismarck would have kicked the Iowa's ass badly; just as it did the Prince of wales and Hood

  • @dahlhorse

The Bismarck was an early war design whereas the Iowa is a mid to late war design. Both the Japanese and the American's developed ships that were more powerful than the Bismarck towards the end of WWII.

  • Bismarck - Early WWII design, 8 15 inch guns, 30 knots

Iowa- Mid to Late WWII design, 9 16 inch guns, 31 knots,( 35 theoretical)

armor is comparable between the two, Speed goes to the Iowa, and Armament goes to Iowa.

The Iowa would win, though its not too far fetched that the Bismarck, with a really good captain could defeat an Iowa with an average captain.

Either way, the victor would probably need a lot of time in dry dock afterwards.

  • Good to see that recognition goes to the ships executive command and crew and not soley to the ship because of guns, speed or armor plate.

  • @Robkat3751 -I totally agree. Best guns, fastest speed and strongest armor means nothing if the crew isn't trained and the command staff makes bad decisions.

  • And had the Bismarck not had a jammed rudder it would have kicked rodney's ass as well as king georges ass. Take that to the bank

  • If she hadnt had a jammed rudder they would have never caught her in the first place.

  • Rodney was more heavily armed than Bismarck, its main issue vs Bismarck was speed and maneuverability, Bismarck could run circles around the Rodney, however, if the Rodney finds a way to pin down the Bismarck, the Bismarck would be in some serious trouble. The Nelson Class was a flawed design, but it was tough as hell and had some formidable weaponry.

  • @dahlhorse Ignorant prick. What the fuck did the rudder have to do with gun control. Norfolk took out B's radar. Thicko, Germanophlic, probably Nazi, fanboy dickhead.

  • Comment removed

  • @DannyBoy777777 Maybe you want to suck my cock and Ernst lindemans, or wait a minute, it is probably being fucked by the nigger barack obama, you like to be fucked by muslims do you not? Go fuck yourself you liberal cocksucking fucking ignorant little fucking gay motherfucker

  • @dahlhorse And you're a faggot to boot. Get your cock sucked by an aids-ridden fag you dirty shit stabber.

  • what are you talking about the hull of the Scharnhorst is almost the same as the Bismarck class

    Scharnhorst

    Dimensions: overall length 231 m, beam 30 m, maximum draft 9.9 m.

    Bismarck

    Dimensions: Waterline length 241.72 m, overall length 253.6 m, beam 36 m, maximum draft 10.61 m, height 15 m

  • nice video

  • Scharny was a pritty girl and a lucky ship , she should have stayed with PE in German waters...

    Nikki

  • Brilliant video Roaklin! some lovely photos and pcitures there. A fleet of that class of ship would of been interesting. Perhaps another main gun at the back and a few more small guns around the side and it would of been amazing. But still a fantastic ship.

  • good ships very fast, probably more effective and better value for money than Bismarck and Tirpitz,v good vedeo.

  • As "bargin" battleships I see your point. If the other three planned for the class had been built instead of the TWO Bismarck class it would have fitted the raiding mission profile better and gave Germany more flexibility.
