As a 49er fan, after last night's NFC Championship Game, I now finally understand how Cowboy's fans feel. Even though I hate the Cowboys and was cheering very hard and laughing at this play. Now I know how it feels and it feels horrible. I am very sad.
I like Leon Lett, A shame he will be recall for the plays mention here, but what about the great blocks and the int he but on Green Bay's Farve that help the Cowboys win the 1996 NFC championship? He should be recall for that, not the 2 mention here. He was one of the Cowboys best players we had.
@greek1237 Finally somebody else knows the truth. Leon broke free of a block to intercept that pass, whch helped put Cowboys up 14-3. Lett was so darn quick off the ball, & he would somehow beat double teams by rolling his hips while extending his arms out. On that infamous Buffalo play in SB 27,Leon actually did an incredible job of evading a block at the beginning of the play or he would not have been able to pick up that fumble in the first place. The next SB,Lett forced fumble to win the game
what happens when the ball gets knocked out during a run into the end zone...is the ball placed where it was knocked out? If so, then what's the big deal, you have emmit smith, and michael irving
Don't worry the Cowboys would go onto win the rest of their games and the Super Bowl and the Dolphins lost the rest of their games and missed the playoffs.
Dallas Cowboys were always 49ers clones, well from the late 80's they were. They used 49ers whole philosophy to win. only thing a little different was the cowboys ran more.
That's OK. Some of us still remember who turned the Superbowl around that year when Dallas was losing in the second half. It wasn't Emmitt, Michael, or Troy. It was Leon who stripped Thurman Thomas, leading to a defensive TD.
i'll go as far as saying he made enough great plays to cover up the two goof ups. dallas went on to win the super bowl both years regardless(lucky for him). i remember leon as a great part of the D-line in the 90s. along with Tolbert, jeffcoat, casillas, maryland, and the great charles haley.

Well, Jimmy Johnson finally confirmed, this thanksgiving 2010, what I knew all along. Lett never should've been in on that play. Lett was a DE and hardly ever played on special teams. Although most junior high kids would know it was a live ball, Leon had practiced/played for years only on defense. On defense you see a loose ball you go for it. Why he didn't see everyone waving off I don't know. Johnson finally took the majority of blame on this. He never should've been on specialteams that day
i loved this play.awesome.this is what those bastards deserve.americas team my ass!!!i live in america and i want dez bryants leg broke i hate the cowboys so much.
So when was the damn ball going to go dead? Seemed like forever that the ball was laying there. The refs should've called it dead anyway, but lol w/e, its made people laugh for years so f*ck it
@MoonLightWright The ball has to be completely motionless for about 1 second for the ball to be considered dead. Since the ball was still spinning around, it was still alive.
Totallybaz. After a blocked kick the ball is "dead" if the defense doesn't touch it. So, if he leaves it alone, the game is over, but because he touched it as a defensive player and did not recover it, it became a "live" ball again.
The Dolphins recovered it and had one more chance to kick a field goal which allowed them to win the game. This was a classic blunder in all of American football.
@funkybunny9966, and he was also a damn good player. Sure he made a couple very memorable mistakes, one of which cost them a game. He was still a damn good player.
@funkybunny9966, he had an incredibly solid career as a D linesman. I don't think you have to be that big of an optomist to say that two bad plays, even if one cost them a regular season game, doesn't undo what he accomplished. Yeah, he'll be remembered for the SB play and for this, but he was still a really good player.
That gave still makes me sick to my stomach when I think about it, but then I remember....the Cowboys never lost another game that season and the Dolphins never won another game that season. Karma gets you.
@phuturephunk I was in my junior year of high school. I won a $20 bet on this game. When I collected on the following Monday, the friend I made the bet against was totally pissed.
Big dumb ox. Inexcusable. I'd like to hear what the players really said about him, no to mention the fans. Leon Lett-down #1, Leon Lett-down #2. The Thanksgiving one had to be on purpose. Everybody was signalling "don't touch it" and there he went. couldn't believe it.
@mrjforall Yeah and he has 3 Superbowl rings. I'm sure you've made dumb mistakes in your life, but you've probably never accomplished anything important enough for them to be filmed.
@endocry Sure I've made mistakes but he got millions and he was a so called Professional who should have known better than to make stupid mistakes like he did. Have you accomplished something worth filming? Probably not so STFU.
Shula should have left or been let go after this season. The Dolphins lost their last five after this game, and he had been kept around for 20 years with no title because of the undefeated season. He had his precious record for career wins by then.
@jln55 Johnson is a SNAKE IN THE GRASS! I'll NEVER forgive him for what he did to the Dolphins when he coached them! The only reason he won in Dallas is Minnesota gave Dallas six picks for a washed up Herschel Walker. Then after two SB wins, Johnson quits, and Barry Switzer proved you could win on talent alone since he hadn't coached in five years, and that was at college! If Switzer could win with that team, I COULD HAVE COACHED THAT TEAM AND WON!
@vccstudents ... Jimmy Johnson built that team from the ground-up. That's how good he was. He built a team so good that anyone could have stepped-in as coach and won. Except, Switzer didn't win a Super Bowl his first season. In fact, Switzer cost the Cowboys a shot at the Super Bowl that year with his 15-yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty in the NFC Championship Game.
@emantabrizi He built that team with Minnesota's draft picks! All he did was prove two drafts were better than one! He didn't have that luxury in Miami. We saw him for the snake in the grass he is! His style was good for the short term because no one else would wheel and deal like that! How successful have they been since those few drafts?
@vccstudents ... It doesn't matter whose draft picks they used to belong to. He is still responsible for choosing the right players with those picks, and not only did he choose the right players, he chose future Hall-of-Famers with those picks. Remember, Emmitt Smith was the 17th pick of the '90 Draft. That means 16 other teams picked the wrong player. Give Jimmy the credit he deserves.
@Gwitfu90, It was blocked just Leon wasn't smart enough to let the ball completely stop. I don't know what the hell was going through his head but he redeemed himself in the Super Bowl by causing a fumble that was picked up and ran for a touchdown that tied the game.
@redmustang03 I'm sure Leon thought he could get the ball, but because of the snow, he slipped. I could be wrong, but I'm sure he thinks he's an idiot more than we do. I really feel bad for him.
@Gwitfu90, he did and did a horrible job trying to get the ball. He's lucky the fans, didn't run him out of town. Later on his career he got busted twice for drug possession and spent a year off for failing a drug test. With the 90's Cowboys, the team practiced hard, played hard, and they PARTIED hard. By 1997 the free agency, old age, a new coach, the salary cap,and legal troubles undid this team and the Cowboys didn't win a playoff game until this year.
@Gwitfu90 , its kind of a weird rule, if they did pick up the ball then the ball would be dead. If the ball goes past the line of scrimmage and if the kicking team touches it, its dead. If the opposing team touches it then its a live ball. If it blocked backwards past the line of scrimmage, then anyone could go after it and it is a live ball. Now on 3rd down if the ball is blocked and you the kicking team recovers it, they can get another shot because once its fourth down you can't
@Gwitfu90, replay the down. So teams usually try to kick on first or third down. So say for example the snap is fumbled, as long as the kicking team recovers it and its STILL THIRD DOWN, then they can kick the ball again. Now if the ball is kicked and its no good meaning it doesn't go through the uprights then the opposing team gets the ball.
Ok i'll take back what I said about Jimmy Johnson's coaching ability, but someone please tell me why he couldnt do anything for the Dolphins if he was so great ?
Hi, I am new to football. Can someone please explain why the Cowboys were not supposed to touch the football after they blocked it? Why didn't the Cowboys just pick up the ball and take a knee? Wouldn't that have ended the game? It seemed like they could have done that.
technically they could have. to be safe you just leave the ball alone there was only 3seconds left in the game they were winning and they could just let the clock run down.
@delafrontera1 When the team that has kicked the ball (either punted or in this case attempted a FG) touches the ball it is automatically dead. When the opposing team touches the ball it becomes a live ball and the team that originally kicked it can regain possession of it. In this case, yes the Cowboys could have just recovered the ball and taken a knee but the safe play would be just to avoid touching it all together and either wait for a Dolphins player to touch it or the refs to call it dead
Hearing the way the commentator says "Leon Lett, oh my goodness gracious" at 0:48 and then again at 1:40 almost seems as if he wasn't the least bit surprised; after all, this game did happen the year after Lett's Super Bowl blunder
Jimmy Johnson Is a good person but a great coach he was NOT.He inherited adynasty In Dallas, with all the talent on that team they could of had Dick Jauron coaching and still one the SB.
I have a question though who the hell was QB for the Dolphins In this game?
Steve DeBerg, but I think Keith Byars had a great game. I think Jimmy Johnson is not all that great a human being but a truly great football mind. He did get those surplus of draft picks from the hershell walker trade, but he did make the most of them.
1:40 Jimmy Johnson was a great coach, and obviously an even better human being. The NFL needs more guys like him today.
Lett was a great player, and it's sad that his tenure in the NFL will be defined by two mistakes that are really small in the overall scheme of those seasons.
The Super Bowl blunder didn't cost them a thing other than a possible higher score, and I'm pretty sure the loss to the Dolphins didn't make or break their season.
Super point. I am very sure it did not make or break their season. Everyone forgets that in the SB rematch with Buffalo two monts later, the Bills had a 13-6 halftime lead. You see the in the SB the previous year, the Bills got way too trigger happy even in the first half. In the rematch, the Bills played a smarter, sneakier game, and were up by a TD goint into the 3rd quarter. But Leon came through, forcing the fumbe that was returned by Washington for a TD. Leon was as great as any DT ever!
@CombatSportFan The Cowboys won the last five games to finish 12-4, the best record in the NFC (meaning a first-round bye and home field throughout the playoffs). And went on to win the Super Bowl. I think it's a safe bet that this loss didn't make or break their season.
Ha, I never realized Leon Lett did THIS, too! I remember the early touchdown celebration, but I didn't know he screwed this up, as well. That's too funny about the girl's note, and the way the guy told the story here is even funnier!
its kind of like a punt... the kicking team can't get the ball unless the recieving team makes contact with the ball. if you catch a field goal kick you can return it for a touchdown.
don beebee (however you spell that name) is the poster boy for "never give up". dallas was stomping a mudhole in their ass and he denied them the highest scoring superbowl of all time. or something to that effect.
As a 49er fan, after last night's NFC Championship Game, I now finally understand how Cowboy's fans feel. Even though I hate the Cowboys and was cheering very hard and laughing at this play. Now I know how it feels and it feels horrible. I am very sad.

@mrjforall Yeah and he has 3 Superbowl rings. I'm sure you've made dumb mistakes in your life, but you've probably never accomplished anything important enough for them to be filmed.
endocry 1 year ago
@endocry Sure I've made mistakes but he got millions and he was a so called Professional who should have known better than to make stupid mistakes like he did. Have you accomplished something worth filming? Probably not so STFU.

Shula should have left or been let go after this season. The Dolphins lost their last five after this game, and he had been kept around for 20 years with no title because of the undefeated season. He had his precious record for career wins by then.

@2SANFRANCISCO erm he fumbled in a superbowl that we won. wheres the choking.?
peteymandem 1 year ago
Jimmy Johnson was a stinking hypocrite! He cut guys for fumbling in games they led by two touchdowns, and then we hear this garbage about Leon Lett.
jln55 1 year ago
@jln55 Johnson is a SNAKE IN THE GRASS! I'll NEVER forgive him for what he did to the Dolphins when he coached them! The only reason he won in Dallas is Minnesota gave Dallas six picks for a washed up Herschel Walker. Then after two SB wins, Johnson quits, and Barry Switzer proved you could win on talent alone since he hadn't coached in five years, and that was at college! If Switzer could win with that team, I COULD HAVE COACHED THAT TEAM AND WON!
vccstudents 1 year ago
@vccstudents ... Jimmy Johnson built that team from the ground-up. That's how good he was. He built a team so good that anyone could have stepped-in as coach and won. Except, Switzer didn't win a Super Bowl his first season. In fact, Switzer cost the Cowboys a shot at the Super Bowl that year with his 15-yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty in the NFC Championship Game.
emantabrizi 1 year ago
@emantabrizi He built that team with Minnesota's draft picks! All he did was prove two drafts were better than one! He didn't have that luxury in Miami. We saw him for the snake in the grass he is! His style was good for the short term because no one else would wheel and deal like that! How successful have they been since those few drafts?
vccstudents 1 year ago
@vccstudents ...

@redmustang03 How do you know when the ball is dead?
Gwitfu90 1 year ago
When the ball stops moving and the official blows his whistle.
redmustang03 1 year ago
@redmustang03 I originally thought if the kick was blocked, it was all over.
Gwitfu90 1 year ago
@Gwitfu90, It was blocked just Leon wasn't smart enough to let the ball completely stop. I don't know what the hell was going through his head but he redeemed himself in the Super Bowl by causing a fumble that was picked up and ran for a touchdown that tied the game.
redmustang03 1 year ago
@redmustang03 I'm sure Leon thought he could get the ball, but because of the snow, he slipped. I could be wrong, but I'm sure he thinks he's an idiot more than we do. I really feel bad for him.
Gwitfu90 1 year ago
@Gwitfu90, he did and did a horrible job trying to get the ball. He's lucky the fans, didn't run him out of town. Later on his career he got busted twice for drug possession and spent a year off for failing a drug test. With the 90's Cowboys, the team practiced hard, played hard, and they PARTIED hard. By 1997 the free agency, old age, a new coach, the salary cap,and legal troubles undid this team and the Cowboys didn't win a playoff game until this year.
redmustang03 1 year ago
@redmustang03 There's something I don't get. When they blocked the field goal, why didn't the Dolphins just pick the ball up?
Gwitfu90 1 year ago
@Gwitfu90 , its kind of a weird rule, if they did pick up the ball then the ball would be dead. If the ball goes past the line of scrimmage and if the kicking team touches it, its dead. If the opposing team touches it then its a live ball. If it blocked backwards past the line of scrimmage, then anyone could go after it and it is a live ball. Now on 3rd down if the ball is blocked and you the kicking team recovers it, they can get another shot because once its fourth down you can't
redmustang03 1 year ago
@Gwitfu90, replay the down. So teams usually try to kick on first or third down. So say for example the snap is fumbled, as long as the kicking team recovers it and its STILL THIRD DOWN, then they can kick the ball again. Now if the ball is kicked and its no good meaning it doesn't go through the uprights then the opposing team gets the ball.

BiancaBoyC 2 years ago
Leon Lett is still a good player.
JawsJaws 2 years ago
Hi, I am new to football. Can someone please explain why the Cowboys were not supposed to touch the football after they blocked it? Why didn't the Cowboys just pick up the ball and take a knee? Wouldn't that have ended the game? It seemed like they could have done that.
delafrontera1 2 years ago
technically they could have. to be safe you just leave the ball alone there was only 3seconds left in the game they were winning and they could just let the clock run down.
balla4life247 2 years ago
@delafrontera1 When the team that has kicked the ball (either punted or in this case attempted a FG) touches the ball it is automatically dead. When the opposing team touches the ball it becomes a live ball and the team that originally kicked it can regain possession of it. In this case, yes the Cowboys could have just recovered the ball and taken a knee but the safe play would be just to avoid touching it all together and either wait for a Dolphins player to touch it or the refs to call it dead
ap181706 2 years ago
Hearing the way the commentator says "Leon Lett, oh my goodness gracious" at 0:48 and then again at 1:40 almost seems as if he wasn't the least bit surprised; after all, this game did happen the year after Lett's Super Bowl blunder
vudujl83 2 years ago
Jimmy Johnson Is a good person but a great coach he was NOT.He inherited adynasty In Dallas, with all the talent on that team they could of had Dick Jauron coaching and still one the SB.
I have a question though who the hell was QB for the Dolphins In this game?
BiancaBoyC 2 years ago
Steve DeBerg, but I think Keith Byars had a great game. I think Jimmy Johnson is not all that great a human being but a truly great football mind. He did get those surplus of draft picks from the hershell walker trade, but he did make the most of them.
plntntvzn 2 years ago
Inherited??? He picked all the talent on the team.
tallsmile28 2 years ago 7
He was good but I'm not going to say he was great he left a mess In Miami.
BiancaBoyC 2 years ago
He inherited a 3-13 team.
Barry Switzer inherited a dynasty that anyone could have coached to another SuperBowl win.
RichV20 2 years ago
1:40 Jimmy Johnson was a great coach, and obviously an even better human being. The NFL needs more guys like him today.
Lett was a great player, and it's sad that his tenure in the NFL will be defined by two mistakes that are really small in the overall scheme of those seasons.
The Super Bowl blunder didn't cost them a thing other than a possible higher score, and I'm pretty sure the loss to the Dolphins didn't make or break their season.
CombatSportFan 2 years ago
It has nothing to do with JJ being a good human being. If Leon couldnt play, he would have been cut immediately.
tallsmile28 2 years ago
Super point. I am very sure it did not make or break their season. Everyone forgets that in the SB rematch with Buffalo two monts later, the Bills had a 13-6 halftime lead. You see the in the SB the previous year, the Bills got way too trigger happy even in the first half. In the rematch, the Bills played a smarter, sneakier game, and were up by a TD goint into the 3rd quarter. But Leon came through, forcing the fumbe that was returned by Washington for a TD. Leon was as great as any DT ever!
plntntvzn 2 years ago 2
@CombatSportFan The Cowboys won the last five games to finish 12-4, the best record in the NFC (meaning a first-round bye and home field throughout the playoffs). And went on to win the Super Bowl. I think it's a safe bet that this loss didn't make or break their season.

because a cowboy player touched the ball
bosmustang10 2 years ago
its kind of like a punt... the kicking team can't get the ball unless the recieving team makes contact with the ball. if you catch a field goal kick you can return it for a touchdown.
