Hey Bob Great Vids. I recently upgraded my kit and my old bass drum has a deeper sound than my new one same size and tuning only difference is the hoops a metal/polymer on old and wood on new can you help me out?
if I'm reading you right... you can't expect 2 "different" bass drums to perform exactly in the same manner... even if they're dimensions are exactly the same. In fact, even if your BD's were absolute DUPLICATES, there would be variables in the drum heads that would make it impossible to match (sound-wise) unless your really lucky!! Sound-wise?... Just get them as close as you can.
Respond to this video... btw- I'm currently testing a new Evans BD head on dual 22" BD's. One is a maple shell the other a birch, same depths... completely different sound results.
Hey Bob, I have a problem with "ring" sound that is vibrating after I hit the toms. I have watched some of Your videos, and I have a question about muffling, because I wonder if it's only the fault of drumheads. Have You ever experiment with muffling the drum shell? For example putting some kind of soft rubber or any other material under the screbolt( I don't know if I name it right) inside the shell?
@MiedzyOczy It's difficult for me to trouble shoot the problem without hearing it. Send me a short video of you hitting the toms... this way I should be able to identify the problem. You can send it to bob@ startarts com
@eddieyervinyan I agree...2 ply reso & batter goes way back in time when Remo introduced the Pinstripe head. Sound is subjective... if it sounds good to YOU... it's a good sound... period! Thanks for giving us the tip Eddie!
Hello Bob, i'm about to replace my resonant drum heads but i have a question. I always go by your tuning tips and have used your theory about seating drum heads and not pressing down on them, but how will i make sure my reso heads are seated sufficiently, sound the best they can and prevent them from damage without playing them in by hitting them? I would also like to thank you for all these great vids, they are really helpful and just make the world of difference. THANK YOU BOB!!!
@TheDrHopeless Great message... thanks Josh! Reso head are a bit tricky. Do your best to tune them equally at each t-rod to a single overall pitch. Play the drum and experiment by raising and lowering the reso head pitch. This way, you'll find a particular sound that works for you. You'll know when you hear it!
@bobgatzen I know this is gona sound really corny but.....THANK YOU!!! I will put your helpful advice to good use in a few days when i pick the heads up. @KodyAB7 The clear will generate more high-end (frequencies) and attack. The coated version will sound more "thuddy, fatter in tone. Always important to experiment for yourself. The cost of an extra head doesn't come close to the benefits in personalize listening... experience!

@jonnyeis The newest version of the EC line... EC2-SST clear batter is a good starting point. In an effort to control tone & sustain I suggest you experiment with 3 reso heads on the 12" tom. The Genera-reso, G-1 reso and of course the EC-reso SST. Reso heads are very important, often over looked. These days I use different head combo's for each & every drum. Send me a url to bob@ startartscom and I'll send you a pic of my latest head set-ups.

Q: I have a Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage (middle of th road rack kit) dw brass snare.

Q: Which heads should i replace the bottoms for, without completely deadening the drum sound itself. They sound pretty nice now, but could probly tone down the 14" rack & 16" floor.
Also what do you recommend for a bass drum skin setup.
@dwsnare Genera-resos/ EC2 SST combo works well on the smaller diameter drums(8-12"). If you after more focus on the large drms try the EC-reso SST.
My favorite BD combo is EMAD2 / Emad-reso. However, currently I'm into dual-miking system by eliminating the "vented" reso head. Killer sound! The set-up is... EMAD2 SST clear batter/ EQ 1-Coated (reso) with an EQ pad inside drum not touching the heads. If you desire less sustain, simply place the EQ pad against the batter head. Hope this helps J

Where on the drum head should I tap to listen for the pitches you mentioned in a previous post? Should I tap about 2 inches from the tension rod or in the middle of the drum? Also, should I tap the batter head with the resonant head muffled or with resonant head allowed to fully resonante?
@johngrooves Hi John...not sure if I answered this one... so the answer is BOTH. 1"-2" off each lug provides "equal" tuning. Than striking the center delivers true, actual pitch that the drummers & listener responds to. More often than not the edge and center pitch are not the same.
i really wish i had enough money to get a drumset that actually is worth getting new heads for.... i want the pdp m5.....but allas, i am 15 and broke haha
Ahhh Bob thanks for these hints and tips. You know everyone of us plays the best instrument ever invented. We get to beat on things and not go to jail and call it music. We can act a little "off" and people find out we're drummers and they think we're colorful. Seriously your hints and tips from these videos have such a serious impact. My kit sounds better and I've become a "free thinker" again on my playing. Words do not describe my thanks to you and what you're doing.
@doctype1 Oh man... that's wonderful to hear. Can't describe how much your message means to me. It's just simple, logical concepts that make a difference. I love this kind of work... I feel like I'm keeping drummers...drumming! Thanks again doc!
@bobgatzen Hello Bob...First off Your Drumming Tips have made a huge impact in my drumming life and i can't thank enough. I have two interesting questions to ask. First can you tell me how to increase the speed of my as you do in your video and any speed drills you think wil help me. Second is there any cymbals you recomend me getting. Thank you and excellent drumming. :D

hey bob! i just got a full set of g2s, and some of tem look like they have oil stuck inside and its makin it look wierd, i dont think it changes the sound. but it would be nice to know if this was normal
@howycwap Nothing to worry about. The only Evans head that place oil between the plies is the "Hydraulic". With the G2's your simply looking at the two plies of film touching each other, as they should be... not to worry.
@howycwap Yes it is... to a degree. From a production standpoint, it's important that the 2 plies come "intimate" contact to each other. You should see a bit of contact in the center and along the edges. This amount of contact is a form of tone control. How does it sound?
i think it sounds good but my 12" tom was REALLY hard to tune, but thats prononly not the head. i think they sound really good though for having a crappy reso.
you know when oil spills in water and makes a rainbow colour? theres a little bit of that look on all the heads
@howycwap The question is have you had this problem with other heads? If so, than the heads are not the culprits. You want to bring your drum to a tech to check for shell roundness (concentricity) and bearing edge flatness (truing).
@bobgatzen well i got the shells last year so i dont think thats the problem, i got it tuned now but i think the problem was me. i wanted a certain sound and since i tuned my 10" and 14" first...i sorta screwed mysef over because the other two tuned perfectly and to get the perfect pitch from the 12" it was just sorta...almost not possible, know what im saying?
@howycwap The 12" drum is "central" to just any tom configurations. It's the perfect diameter and depth (8x12). With that said I'd tune the 12 where it feel sounds the best to YOU. Than pitch the remaining toms from the 12" vantage point. Here are some basic pitches to get you in the ballpark.
Toms- 16"> B-C, 14"> D-Eb, 12"> F-Ab, 10" > C-D and 8” F-G. The 13” is generally happy around an "E".
@bobgatzen Where on the drum head should I tap to listen for these pitches? Should I tap about 2 inches from the tension rod or in the middle of the drum? Also, should I tap the batter head with the resonant head muffled or with resonant head allowed to fully resonante?
@johngrooves There are 2 basic tuning techniques. 1. "SPECIFIC" tuning by striking approx. 1-2" of each key-rod while MUFFLING the opposite head. 2. "OVERALL tuning by mount the drum on the stand and use the same procedure but with both heads vibrating. There are vids demo'ing this procedure on the channel.
i got the ec resonants for my toms and i love em! lot easier tuning and great sound w/ a 2ply top head (remo emperor, plannin on gettin some g2's soon tho) thanks for the recommendation bob!
@HeadshotBambii Are you rich!!!!..LOL'n!!! happy Holidays... keep practicing tuning... one day you'll all of sudden ....GET IT! That's the way it worked for me.
Thank the stars for Bob, i have ALWAYS used an ordinary reso head, no-one has explained how or what a reso head does to me before, i always thought a thicker reso would choke up a bit more, how wrong,, i use EC2's myself, i will be going for some EC2 reso's very shortly,, cheers Bob,,
man o man Bob Gatzens tips and videos plus evans drum heads is the best combo ever.... ever since i started watching bobs videos my drums sound a billion times better. so my set with all evans heads now and all the great tips for bob produce the best sound possible!!! Thank you so much Bob Gatzen and evans for being the best!!!
@Joeyrcbmx You're the best Joey!! You're timing is impeccable!! Moments ago I was asking myself... why do I spend all this time & Energy responding to YTubers? You're message was the answer to my question... and it's my favorite day of week...FRIDAY!! Big thanks J!!
@bobgatzen Hey Bob, how r u? (long time no talk) Well after taking your advise and watching your vids I think im almost satisfied with my kit. I do have one question though. I have ec2's on all batters and ec resos on bottom (Rogers xp8 8 ply 8x8-16x16,22x18) I love the new ec2s , was wondering, If I changed to a coated head on batters would that lack attack and sustain? you give the best advise as always with physics to back it up. thanks, Mike
@xp8maple the basic difference between clear & coated heads is timbre... the nature of sound. Clear heads are known for "brightness" in attack, medium sustain. Coated heads generate a "denser" more compact attack and depending on tunings... more sustain than clear heads. Sounds backwards but think about cymbals...which has more sustain, a heavy ride or a thin crash? The ride wins! It's all about personal choice... not better or worse. My motto is Explore, Discover, CREATE!
@drummerdude08ful Thanks dude! Focus on a single drum... the 12" tom. Set the reso head to the lowest possible pitch than copy that pitch to the batter head. Next...bring the batter head pict upwards in small increments. It's simply technique not unlike learning to "roll" or play a paraddidle. Drum tuning is like learning how to PLAY the drums... the process is very similar... repetition, rep's reps....reps!
I've been a remo guy ever since I got my 1st real good beginner kit which was a tama swingstar. I've always used remo heads but u kinda making me wna switch to evans. Im saving to get a tama sc bb with 3 hyperdrive sizes so we'll see who's heads I get to beat up when I finally get my kit
You know wats weird? Like ever 3rd or 4th time I needa change my batter heads I always change my reso heads thinking they might need a changing to just because im getting new batter heads. Now its more important to me to change the reso heads haha. Thx bob
I seriously never gave them a second thought until this.
Bob you have greatly improved my drum knowledge. You are the best drum teacher when it comes to the craft. I personally like the 7 Mil clear. Its what will make my kit perfect. Thank you Bob. Thank you Evans.
@darksymphonybass That's great to hear. You're very welcome from all of of us @ Evans. These are the kind stories that keeps us stoked! Keep up the great work!
Bob. Always enjoy your videos. I've been Aquarian guy for a little over 10 years now. I'm ready to dive in to something new. I'm thinking that EC2 / EC Reso might be the sound I'm looking for. And boy are you right...most companies don't really pay too much attention to the reso heads.
@FlyingDrums Sound is subjective so it's best to test the ECsst /EC-reso out on the 12" to see if you like the sound and feel. My bet is you'll fall in love with it. Please let me know how it works out for you.
hi bob, i just ordered a 13" dw tom and im so excited... but are the ec2 sst clears only availble 6-18 even. cuz i love mine and would want one on the 13
@Pearldrum07 The sst's are relatively new. Probably due to having back inventory of first generation EC13's with the silver ring. It will change over time.
Bob first of all, thank you for all these great videos. Even though I am a somewhat more experienced drummer now, I still find these videos really helpful! You inspired me to experiment with reso heads, normally I'd go for clear ambassadors but because of this video, I'm certain that your EC reso will be great to get that really low end out of my floortoms, since I've been struggling to get a low sound out of my 14 x 14" Any advise on a 12x9 tom, I really want that punchy bright short attack?
I just happened upon your videos this evening and could not help myself but to watch every one of them that I could as they are as inspirational as they are educational. I did want to ask your opinion of one type of drum as I myself have the entire compliment of sizes included within my kit ; and that would be none other than the Rototom... Is there a bad rap that accompanies them due to price and structure ? Thanks for your input -R-
@1stRogInAz Wow...every one of the 65 videos... you are a trooper!! Thank you!
The Rototom was a great invention in regards to quickly and easily changing pitch to match and add tonal qualities to the drum set. Good reminder...I should take mine out again!
Hey Bob, I've been watching your videos lately on tuning and I still am lost because I am horrible at this tuning business. I got a new kit last September and I have decided to rearrange my setup and tune the drums but I have many problems. My two major wishes are that I can get a quick, punchy sound to all my drums and the other is to have my toms sounding deep and bass-y, like in metal for instance. Can you help me out at all?
1. Tune the resonant head as low as possible, copy that pitch to the batter head and listen. Raise the pitch of the batter slightly; listen on how that affects sound
2. Tuning Range- raise the resonant and batter head 1/2 step from LPP, listen. Raise the batter another half step…listen. Repeat this entire process until you find a sound that works
3. Hi/Lo pitch relationship- experiment with the batter head slightly lower in pitch compared to the reso head and vice versa.
Hey Bob, do you usually use all the same reso heads for all three toms? For example all EC-reso or all G1? Im thinking maybe EC-reso for my floor tom, G1 on the other two, do you think this a good idea or should i use the same reso head for all three drums?
@pokemetalfan Hardly ever, For instance, the last 2 videos sported combinations (the blue flamed kit) between EC2-SST, Powercenter and Onyx batters with EC and Genera resos Same with snare drum combos. The only time I use the same style heads is when I'm testing or working on a new product product for Evans.
I regard each drum as a completely separate instrument. The question is... does a 8" tom behave the same as a 16 tom?... of course not. experiment... break the mold!
@bobgatzen hahahah, shame they're gone forever, but really, thanks for these videos. my drums have never sounded better! you taught me alot about tuning and just having fun and experimenting.
Bob, I just discovered your videos. Man, thank you so much for posting these. My kit sounds great and I've learned a ton of excellent tuning and drumming tips. Thank you, sir!
@skrape110 Oh stop it...you're making me blush! Heh heh...love your comment... thanks for writing!
I will be touring with Rick Drumm (Evans Pres.) in the fall season. The dates will be sporadic due to our busy schedules. I'd love to do some in Chicago.. one of my fave cities. Please stay in touch.
@TheFreakynator Always my pleasure to help out fellow drummers... I understand how difficult it is to become expertise in tuning. Just keep listening, singing and above all dabble with a secondary instrument like Piano or guitar.
One day, Eureka!! It'll hit you... clear as a bell!
@FrydPraduct These days i approach each drum as a separate instrument because they are! A 10" doesn't behave like a 16" floor tom, why should the heads b the same? For example, my birch kit is set-up is...10" tom Powercenter batter/G-1 clear reso, 12" tom ONYX batter/ Genera reso, 14" floor tom-G-2 Coated batter/ Genera coated, 16" tom- EC2SST clear / EC-reso. Experiment, have fun!
bob, thanks a lot for posting all these vids,I always thought my kit's sound will never improve ever.,your vids helped me realize it ain't true.,your a great teacher bob.,
@madoxtl You're very welcome mad. Dynamic Range will affect your technique in a positive way. It's an important stepping stone in developing your personalized sound and feel at the kit.
@snakeeyes5641 Always keep in mind that pitching toms can vary depending many things... shell design, bearing edges, hoops, head types, suspension system, etc. It's always best for the individual pitches between the reso & batter. It's good practice to do the "pitch" matching system.
Here are "general" pitches that are likely to work.
@clance13 Both the Black/Red and Blue/white flamed kits were custom made... very expensive but I'm a DW endorser so they provide the drums as part of my service to the company.
Hi Bob ! excellent videos and information. you are truly an inspiration! . i have ec2( not sst) on all my kit and i just bought ecs2 coated but i havent installed them because i need new resos.
so what would you recommend for resos for Birch 8 10 12 14 16 Pearl masters kit with new EC2s Coated ?
HI Bob great tips, I have a little problem with micing, the kins over resinates and my opuss 88 mikes start to feed out? . would I look at muffaling the heads? or have i got the tuning all wrong. thanks
Mic placement is crucial. Best to experiment with proximity and angles. For instance, there's a big difference between a mic 6-8" away from the front bass drum head facing "directly" into the head versus angling the mic 20-30 degrees left or right.
Hi Bob, I've just been tuning my toms, they're set to a diatonic scale from Root to 5th (over the 5 drums) I matched the reso and batter heads pitchwise nicely as well thanks to your lessons on tuning!
My first four are sounding brilliant, and have a nice focused pitch and a good sustain time... ...but my top tom, at 8" diameter, is struggling to hold the sustain at the pitch. Is there a way to solve that problem?
Has your 8" always been problematic? This is important in figuring out what is to blame...the head or the drum... some times a little of both that can add up to disaster.
@bobgatzen, it's been good tuned a semitone-tone lower, I must admit I don't expect floor tom like sustain, but a quaver at around 120 would be what I'd like.
I'm not truly a drummer and mainly use my drums for my home studio work (I'm doing a Music Production) so it doesn't need to be perfect, but I do know that a good sound is from the source!
Outside of winning a competition..."Best" has many meanings... at best!
Each of these categories work well depending on what you're after sound-wise. For instance right now I'm using EC2 SST/ Genera reso on the 14" same & the 16 sub> E
Yes, a balance between fingers and wrist motion. Wrist for volume & accents. Fingers for subtle notes between accents.

Where on the drum head should I tap to listen for the pitches you mentioned in a previous post? Should I tap about 2 inches from the tension rod or in the middle of the drum? Also, should I tap the batter head with the resonant head muffled or with resonant head allowed to fully resonante?
johngrooves 11 months ago
@johngrooves Hi John...not sure if I answered this one... so the answer is BOTH. 1"-2" off each lug provides "equal" tuning. Than striking the center delivers true, actual pitch that the drummers & listener responds to. More often than not the edge and center pitch are not the same.

Mooning2314 1 year ago
hey bob! i just got a full set of g2s, and some of tem look like they have oil stuck inside and its makin it look wierd, i dont think it changes the sound. but it would be nice to know if this was normal
howycwap 1 year ago
@howycwap Nothing to worry about. The only Evans head that place oil between the plies is the "Hydraulic". With the G2's your simply looking at the two plies of film touching each other, as they should be... not to worry.
bobgatzen 1 year ago
@bobgatzen
thank you sir
howycwap 1 year ago
@howycwap Yes it is... to a degree. From a production standpoint, it's important that the 2 plies come "intimate" contact to each other. You should see a bit of contact in the center and along the edges. This amount of contact is a form of tone control. How does it sound?
bobgatzen 1 year ago
@bobgatzen
i think it sounds good but my 12" tom was REALLY hard to tune, but thats prononly not the head. i think they sound really good though for having a crappy reso.
you know when oil spills in water and makes a rainbow colour? theres a little bit of that look on all the heads
howycwap 1 year ago
@howycwap The question is have you had this problem with other heads? If so, than the heads are not the culprits. You want to bring your drum to a tech to check for shell roundness (concentricity) and bearing edge flatness (truing).
bobgatzen 1 year ago
@bobgatzen well i got the shells last year so i dont think thats the problem, i got it tuned now but i think the problem was me. i wanted a certain sound and since i tuned my 10" and 14" first...i sorta screwed mysef over because the other two tuned perfectly and to get the perfect pitch from the 12" it was just sorta...almost not possible, know what im saying?
howycwap 1 year ago
@howycwap The 12" drum is "central" to just any tom configurations. It's the perfect diameter and depth (8x12). With that said I'd tune the 12 where it feel sounds the best to YOU. Than pitch the remaining toms from the 12" vantage point. Here are some basic pitches to get you in the ballpark.
Toms- 16"> B-C, 14"> D-Eb, 12"> F-Ab, 10" > C-D and 8” F-G. The 13” is generally happy around an "E".
Hope this helps

johngrooves 11 months ago
@johngrooves There are 2 basic tuning techniques. 1. "SPECIFIC" tuning by striking approx. 1-2" of each key-rod while MUFFLING the opposite head. 2. "OVERALL tuning by mount the drum on the stand and use the same procedure but with both heads vibrating. There are vids demo'ing this procedure on the channel.
Hope this helps

@bobgatzen Hey Bob, how r u? (long time no talk) Well after taking your advise and watching your vids I think im almost satisfied with my kit. I do have one question though. I have ec2's on all batters and ec resos on bottom (Rogers xp8 8 ply 8x8-16x16,22x18) I love the new ec2s , was wondering, If I changed to a coated head on batters would that lack attack and sustain? you give the best advise as always with physics to back it up. thanks, Mike
xp8maple 1 year ago
@xp8maple the basic difference between clear & coated heads is timbre... the nature of sound. Clear heads are known for "brightness" in attack, medium sustain. Coated heads generate a "denser" more compact attack and depending on tunings... more sustain than clear heads. Sounds backwards but think about cymbals...which has more sustain, a heavy ride or a thin crash? The ride wins! It's all about personal choice... not better or worse. My motto is Explore, Discover, CREATE!
bobgatzen 1 year ago
you should be famos dude how come my drums dont sound like that??? yours are pimp dude your awesome
drummerdude08ful 1 year ago
@drummerdude08ful Thanks dude! Focus on a single drum... the 12" tom. Set the reso head to the lowest possible pitch than copy that pitch to the batter head. Next...bring the batter head pict upwards in small increments. It's simply technique not unlike learning to "roll" or play a paraddidle. Drum tuning is like learning how to PLAY the drums... the process is very similar... repetition, rep's reps....reps!

Bob. Always enjoy your videos. I've been Aquarian guy for a little over 10 years now. I'm ready to dive in to something new. I'm thinking that EC2 / EC Reso might be the sound I'm looking for. And boy are you right...most companies don't really pay too much attention to the reso heads.
FlyingDrums 1 year ago
@FlyingDrums Sound is subjective so it's best to test the ECsst /EC-reso out on the 12" to see if you like the sound and feel. My bet is you'll fall in love with it. Please let me know how it works out for you.

chafey3 1 year ago
Bob first of all, thank you for all these great videos. Even though I am a somewhat more experienced drummer now, I still find these videos really helpful! You inspired me to experiment with reso heads, normally I'd go for clear ambassadors but because of this video, I'm certain that your EC reso will be great to get that really low end out of my floortoms, since I've been struggling to get a low sound out of my 14 x 14" Any advise on a 12x9 tom, I really want that punchy bright short attack?
xXIAMSTERDAMXx 1 year ago
@xXIAMSTERDAMXx Well you're very welcome...mypleasure...as long as it's a success story!!!!
If you into the EC batter sound, simply use a Genera-reso for a brighter, colorful sound,,,more spread. I do this myself.
bobgatzen 1 year ago
I just happened upon your videos this evening and could not help myself but to watch every one of them that I could as they are as inspirational as they are educational. I did want to ask your opinion of one type of drum as I myself have the entire compliment of sizes included within my kit ; and that would be none other than the Rototom... Is there a bad rap that accompanies them due to price and structure ? Thanks for your input -R-
1stRogInAz 1 year ago
@1stRogInAz Wow...every one of the 65 videos... you are a trooper!! Thank you!
The Rototom was a great invention in regards to quickly and easily changing pitch to match and add tonal qualities to the drum set. Good reminder...I should take mine out again!
bobgatzen 1 year ago
Hey Bob, I've been watching your videos lately on tuning and I still am lost because I am horrible at this tuning business. I got a new kit last September and I have decided to rearrange my setup and tune the drums but I have many problems. My two major wishes are that I can get a quick, punchy sound to all my drums and the other is to have my toms sounding deep and bass-y, like in metal for instance. Can you help me out at all?
hiahaza8 1 year ago
@hiahaza8
Try this
3. Hi/Lo pitch relationship- experiment with the batter head slightly lower in pitch compared to the reso head and vice versa.
bobgatzen 1 year ago
@bobgatzen thanks a lot Bob, I will definitely try those steps out as soon as possible

apexpein39 1 year ago
@apexpein39 Yeah, I agree...G-2 reso's! not the best choice
bobgatzen 1 year ago
Hey Bob, do you usually use all the same reso heads for all three toms? For example all EC-reso or all G1? Im thinking maybe EC-reso for my floor tom, G1 on the other two, do you think this a good idea or should i use the same reso head for all three drums?
pokemetalfan 1 year ago
@pokemetalfan Hardly ever, For instance, the last 2 videos sported combinations (the blue flamed kit) between EC2-SST, Powercenter and Onyx batters with EC and Genera resos Same with snare drum combos. The only time I use the same style heads is when I'm testing or working on a new product product for Evans.
I regard each drum as a completely separate instrument. The question is... does a 8" tom behave the same as a 16 tom?... of course not. experiment... break the mold!

@bobgatzen i was just wondering whats your favorite reso drum head?
FrydPraduct 1 year ago
@FrydPraduct These days i approach each drum as a separate instrument because they are! A 10" doesn't behave like a 16" floor tom, why should the heads b the same? For example, my birch kit is set-up is...10" tom Powercenter batter/G-1 clear reso, 12" tom ONYX batter/ Genera reso, 14" floor tom-G-2 Coated batter/ Genera coated, 16" tom- EC2SST clear / EC-reso. snakeeyes5641 1 year ago
8"- Ab, 10"- Eb, 12"-C, 14"Eb octave lower than 10" & 16-B

HI Bob great tips, I have a little problem with micing, the kins over resinates and my opuss 88 mikes start to feed out? . would I look at muffaling the heads? or have i got the tuning all wrong. thanks
christhunda 1 year ago
Mic placement is crucial. Best to experiment with proximity and angles. For instance, there's a big difference between a mic 6-8" away from the front bass drum head facing "directly" into the head versus angling the mic 20-30 degrees left or right.
bobgatzen 1 year ago
Hi Bob, I've just been tuning my toms, they're set to a diatonic scale from Root to 5th (over the 5 drums) I matched the reso and batter heads pitchwise nicely as well thanks to your lessons on tuning!
My first four are sounding brilliant, and have a nice focused pitch and a good sustain time... ...but my top tom, at 8" diameter, is struggling to hold the sustain at the pitch. Is there a way to solve that problem?
Edd030427 1 year ago
Has your 8" always been problematic? This is important in figuring out what is to blame...the head or the drum... some times a little of both that can add up to disaster.
bobgatzen 1 year ago
@bobgatzen, it's been good tuned a semitone-tone lower, I must admit I don't expect floor tom like sustain, but a quaver at around 120 would be what I'd like.
I'm not truly a drummer and mainly use my drums for my home studio work (I'm doing a Music Production) so it doesn't need to be perfect, but I do know that a good sound is from the source!
Edd030427 1 year ago
Hi Bob. Great videos! I need something loud but not too high pitched and not much resonance. Just wondering which of these would be better:
EC2 SST + EC Reso
EC2 SST + Clear Reso
Onyx + EC Reso
Onyx + Clear Reso
Thanks so much.
tonyalmeida80 1 year ago
Outside of winning a competition..."Best" has many meanings... at best!
Each of these categories work well depending on what you're after sound-wise. For instance right now I'm using EC2 SST/ Genera reso on the 14" same & the 16 sub> E
