I can't believe how real avatar looks. When I was little, I remember my brother saying to my dad "animation is getting so good now. One day it will look so real you won't be able to tell what parts are animated and what parts are real". Avatar is a perfect example of that.

IMO, Terminator 2 was Cameron's last good film. the special effects and the process of motion capture in this movie are AMAZING, but Camron focuses more on F/X then on story. If you watch his old movies, he focused a lot more on the stories of his films, but after T2, plot went out the window for him, and he spent all his time on the special effects and less on the story. Avatar was an alright movie, but i think that it is overpraised and WAY overrated.

Look at star wars episode 1. that made almost a billion dollars, and that movie was a huge dissapointment. look at transformers 2. that movie made 900 million, and that movie was not that great either. The money does not mean that the movie is good. And look at Avatar on a critical level. The screenplay was almost cringe-worthy, the acting was not that special, and the moive was too cliched and predictable.

But we didn't see those "special" 3d cameras that Cameron spent 2 years inventing specially for this movie!!! I just saw them carrying regular sony cameras and shooting the dots on their faces and bodies to be translated into a movement of the computer models (which is an old technology)! Didn't see any camera with 2 lenses (stereotype cameras) for 3d capturing. Didn't see any new or special cameras! Was that a lie or what? Anybody has a clue???
@Chigokai1080 Yeah, I always thought the same. I was impressed by the visuals and the technology is surely a step forward in that field. However, the film itself was mediocre at best since I kept predicting every plot point and they were all on the mark. I loved this film so much---I saw it several times in the theaters, and bought it the day it came out. my son, who can barely sit through a disney movie, was glued to this for the entire length of the movie. the only thing that was bad was that it had to end.
This is the best film ever ! The soundtrack is perfect, actors, story and other things are just amazing. I watched it 4 times in 4 days and I still want watch Avatar.

I agree with james this type of technology is going to become revolutionary and very important as this world grows and reaches into more difficult technologic equations and this will be remembered and passed on from generation to generation.

this whole technology...the whole thing they used into making this film is amazing, and it shows so much more opportunities in the industry, I mean a whole movie can be done by stunts alone and actors won't have to have their good looks, while we will still be getting an extraordinary end-product. The reality and liveliness of the moves combined with the greatness of the CGI opens up a whole new dimension to the sci-fi/fantasy gender especially, but not only, already looking forwards for Avatar2
@Kweezy157 Nope. The clusters that rendered it ran, if I remember correctly, Gentoo Linux. Winblows sucks. It might have appeared on some workstations, but those were not what did the grunt work in this project. Forget your Windows/Mac stereotypes. Unix implementations (Linux, Darwin aka Mac OS X) kick Windows' a** so far it's not funny (security, stability, ...). Open source rules.
Did you know. The fastest computer on earth can actually render CGI in real time. Imagine you could play with those graphics. Well you will have to wait another 10-20 years before you see a game that looks like this.

@SquishyCandyftw The reason why hurt locker beat this is because all movie critics really care about how unoriginal the plot is. Which also gives people a reason to hate this movie. Even though the movie was more about the world of pandora, future human technology, awesome CGI and the way the plot was presented to the audience, alot of people still rated it off the plot directly ignoring all of the other features of the movie. Which is a shame because not as much work was put into the plot.
@firebubblesoncrack It's just because it's a military movie and since we're in a time of war, it would win. Private Ryan makes the Hurt Locker look like a pansy movie.

@Alexandrarghh Like hell the story wasn't good. I've seen both movies, I like military movies and the Hurt Locker couldn't even hold my attention. Brothers is better than Hurt Locker and Avatar has a great story.

I agree with james this type of technology is going to become revolutionary and very important as this world grows and reaches into more difficult technologic equations and this will be remembered and passed on from generation to generation.

I'm not saying Avatar wasn't a good movie, but am I alone in thinking that most of it's allure was the novelty in the way this was made?
I felt the story was cliche and the acting was about on par with Hollywood standards... is that what entertains people these days? I was left wanting more (not in the good way). I have yet to go to a CGI style movie and get blown away with the story. The original Toy Story is the only exception... anyone else feel this way?

this whole technology...the whole thing they used into making this film is amazing, and it shows so much more opportunities in the industry, I mean a whole movie can be done by stunts alone and actors won't have to have their good looks, while we will still be getting an extraordinary end-product. The reality and liveliness of the moves combined with the greatness of the CGI opens up a whole new dimension to the sci-fi/fantasy gender especially, but not only, already looking forwards for Avatar2

@Kweezy157 Nope. The clusters that rendered it ran, if I remember correctly, Gentoo Linux. Winblows sucks. It might have appeared on some workstations, but those were not what did the grunt work in this project. Forget your Windows/Mac stereotypes. Unix implementations (Linux, Darwin aka Mac OS X) kick Windows' a** so far it's not funny (security, stability, ...). Open source rules.

Did you know. The fastest computer on earth can actually render CGI in real time. Imagine you could play with those graphics. Well you will have to wait another 10-20 years before you see a game that looks like this.

@SquishyCandyftw The reason why hurt locker beat this is because all movie critics really care about how unoriginal the plot is. Which also gives people a reason to hate this movie. Even though the movie was more about the world of pandora, future human technology, awesome CGI and the way the plot was presented to the audience, alot of people still rated it off the plot directly ignoring all of the other features of the movie. Which is a shame because not as much work was put into the plot.
