I used to live a half mile away from Edmonton International Speedway and I used to Sneak" in under the fence every weekend when I was only 12. I was 18 at the time this movie was made but I also had the opportunity of actually racing on that track one year before this movie was made, in a High School Showdown and I came in 3rd out of a field of 125 other cars,I ran an 18.333 all the way until I broke out with an 18.399 ( it was done with a 3/4 ton Dodge short wheel base van). LoL!
For people wondering if it's any good, I just watched it, and it's a cheap (VERY cheap) exploitation film about racing. Totally straightforward. No Cronenberg touches. Just cars, explosions, tough guys, unrepentant villains, and desperately cheesy '70s sex. Terrible faux-Springsteen soundtrack too. In short: it's exactly what the trailer portrays it to be, but slower.
Is this any good? I've heard that it's completely unlike anything Cronenberg's done (obviously). But h also likes cars, so I can imagine him doing a good job.
Gordie Bonin's car was used for the funny car. Ken Sitko's was used for the dragster. Move was filmed in Edmonton Canada at the old Edmonton Speedway.
The scene in the house where they decide to get the car that was stolen was shot in my parents living room... they still live there and the inside the garage shots were in their garage
Filmed at the Old Edmonton Speedway in 1977. Terry Capp, who still drives today, had his funny car painted over for the racing scenes. My uncle, Ken Sitko, also drove the dragster that was painted over.
This is definitely Cronenberg's least typical film, and being a hardcore fan of his I can sympathize with those who don't really care for this movie. Personally, though, I love it, but then I'm big on drag racing anyway. I think it's a cool little 70's style drive-in flick, nothing more. But John Saxon always makes everything he's in a little better. The biggest weakness by far, however, is the music, which you can hear a little bit of in this trailer. It's simply awful!

THIS LOOKS LIKE SHIT!!!
Nascar style haha
pure americana...
i'd have to watch it and see if Cronenberg was being derisive or aiming for a Top Gun type movie

I think the movie is Cronenberg's weakest, but it was nice to see the trailer. Its a good preview. Thank you for posting!
