There are a lot of great guitar players out there of any style. Classical, Blues, Rock, heavy metal,etc. I'm just like the fact that John Petrucci has his own self descipline. You can tell he is self taught. Incredible!. I have one of his lesson dvds. I watch it just for the fact that it's great guitar work of his style. Plus it has a lot of footage. But I'm not going to play like him. To many bands sound the same anyway.

I dont know why they makes these videos....you know you will never be as good as John Petrucci. These videos are simply to tell other guitar players they suck and should just set their guitar down and sell it on ebay. Petrucci is God.

@thelegendarydrummer These Young Guitar DVDs are great. The stuff John is playing here is pretty simple stuff for a kid (or anyone else) that has the rudiments down. As long as each exercise is done slowly at first, within a couple/few weeks, anyone wishing to play this stuff can do it. The faster stuff with definitely take more time; accuracy between the left & right hands is essential, as well as alternate picking and legato skills. It's up to the player to find his own voice with the guitar.

anyone know what amp does he use in the rite of passage riffs?cuz it sound very similar to a mesa boogie rectifier kind of amp to me but I heard he is using now only the Mark V amp.

@DreamTallica6666 he got ahold of the mark V near the end of the record process so you can only hear that amp on count, for the rest of the album he uses his rectifiers and old mark models.

@RelaxationII Not necessarily, higher gain gives you far faaar more options with regards to harmonics which give you more dynamics to play with. Essentially there is no right or wrong..those who say distortion is for covering up mistakes and that people should use as little as possible are elitist, closed minded and illinformed, but the same applies to those who say you should always use distortion..then again I have never heard anyone say that.

all of john petrucci is a work art.. is glory.. but the thing that I speak is that he sometimes use so much the delay.. and for me is so good because gives a special taste.. I use delay at the same time in my guitar.. but sometimes I feel.. just feel.. that he lost the control of the effects..

He's sitting right in front of the cabinets, that's feedback you're hearing since he's cranking up some immense gain on that part. He's most likely using a gain pedal which means he's getting severe feedback because he's sitting so close to the cabs.
