I have a friend whos in the Army JROTC at Trimble Tech H.S, and they still wear them, the only time they wear them is when there performing color guard at the football games.
the Uniform is still being use by the Navy, Young Marines, Air Force Civil Air Patrol, Sea Cadets and Some High Schools for JROTC.
Some can understand why most don't want to starch or iron but some people like myself thought you iron and press one uniform,But you where issued two sets one to iron and starch the other to wash and wear in combat plus theirs no harm of taking a half hour off the laptop and do alittle ironing that alone "wont kill you" Then again the army can just bring back a non shine black boot and dvelope a pattern more intuned to the BDU and DCUs that dont require too much work, just a thought.
I prefer the acu since most soldiers and I dont want to starch, iron and spit shine our boots. Only bad thing I can say about acu, crouch area rip easy, the velco is crap.
This gear blew. Buttons came off. Pockets put in unnecessary places that trapped in heat and moisture and were covered up by armor and backpacks anyway. Collar design made no sense. Pockets on the pants were too huge and were hard to get to while crouching. Good riddance.
we need to go back to that unifrom after we leave afghanistan and iraq. i don't care if you have to starch, press, iron or etc. the thing is.. maintaing the BDU and DCU teach soldiers self discipline and take pride of your job.
I want to go back to that uniform, the acu looks like a shitty pair of pajamas. The crotch rips out of them easily as well. The velcro is also highly POG and gay. One day the top brass might stop sucking cock and get us a decent uniform again.
I wish we would have kept the Summer Khaki Uniform with the BDU's & now the ACU's. When I first enlisted we were issued the fatigues & it was easy to identify the soldiers who took pride in themselves & their chosen profession. Today's military is very different with regards to uniform & the individuals serving.

I always wore US Millitary uniforms not that Im particularly pro american but i just always did for some reason. When digital uniforms came up i decided not to switch to them. I do not like ACU and I like MARPAT neither. I respect US Army choosing ACU and I understand that they provide better camouflage in urban areas but i simply do not like it. It makes you look strange somehow blurry, woodland BDUs is a classic for outdoor activities, camping, martial arts or shooting practise.
woodland BDUs are best! It makes the army more realistic and scarier than ACU. The army should just update the uniform to have the all the pockets and velcro of the ACU uniform. NB. anyone who thinks wood BDU was a failure is an absolute idiot!
The new Digital Camoflauge uniforms are UGLY. I love BDU's, because you have to polish the boots and starch your uniform, unlike the ACU's, or ABU's, or MARPAT, ETC. the new uniform is lazy. Instead of having the most shiny boots in your squadron or entire group, you have the cleanest. What the hell is that? And to hell with velcro. You might as well say, "Here I am , you commies!" because you take your patches of and they hear it. I like buttons and doing something called UNIFORM MATINANCE.
Good riddance! We had the lousy poly blend green fatiques before the BDU's but My unit (the 82nd airborne) was one of three units in the entire army to have a field uniform of ripstop nylon cammies in the woodland pattern. Quite possibly the best uniform in the army's history. We got ACU's before we deployed to Iraq. I rate them a close second.
When I was in the military from 1985-2006, The BDU=uniform was all they had except for DCU and Jungle uniforms. I had all three and seen some ACU uniforms comming in. I told my self it is time to step out and retire by the way. Hooah!!!!!!!!
i still beleive the BDU's are better looking and everything. i'm in JROTC, but personally from experience, the ACU's just don't cut it. i like the look of the BDU's, and the comfort in them.
although, BDU's look much more vietnam, they look old school which is badass. the ACU's look much more modern/digital.
@blackHawkMW92 well, in my opinion, when it came to running through obstacle courses and whatnot, the BDU's just felt better to be in, but than again, standing in formation in august, in florida in black boots was just hell, but as far as the durability i guess, i was able to do much much more in the BDU.
my ACU works great too, i love the ACU too but the BDU was better in my opinion.
@chiasp0609 Air Force personel like Pararescuemen and so on who would actually go on the ground into combat still wear BDUs as far as I know. The new ABU is not really used in combat.
@ginjaninja1988 Yes sometimes PJs do use ABUs for combat. But most prefer the Multicam pattern for Afghanistan-like terrain because they blend in perfectly. And ABUs can get very hot in the sun.
I will miss the old BDU for sure, it works great in the woods while i play airsoft and i also have the new ACU and like all my friends here are saying its just not the same thing.
I still don't understand how bright grey (ACU) will help our troops blend into the woods. They've gone to an inferior camo from the old woodland. Good job US Army!
Man... I use a BDU for airsoft... and then when I play the guys wearing BDU's are completly invisible environment. But the guys that are wearing those 'Universal' ACU's just plain stand out and are completely visible :P
LOL...The choice of song cracked me up, but I completely agree with you. The BDU's were an outstanding military uniform. I'm glad I got out of the Army before they started wearing the pajama-looking rags they wear today, with the hideous beige boots. IMO, there's nothing martial about that new uniform, but who knows, maybe I'm just old-school like that. Anyway, thanks for the video!
No, you're right. As a current Soldier serving, I can't tell you how much I miss how BDUs fit. The ACUs are baggy and make everyone look raggedy. It's a lazy uniform that doesn't have any appeal and motivation like the BDUs once had. The pattern is ok, but the way that uniform is cut.....might as well be maternity BDUs. The old uni had like an athletic cut which made us look sharp while these new ones don't. Did you see how those DSs looked? Poppin' starch!
Dam, this video makes me sad. I remember growing, seeing troops in this uniform crisp and clean looking. I just joined CAP, and have to wear it. I love it. I own ACU, but it isn't nearly has sharp.
ACU doesn't blend in for shit. Bdu could actually outperform the digital crap. (minus MARPAT) the only good one Is marpat. Marpat is basically an updated BDU for the marines. Army should either share marpat with the marines and wear black boots with it instead of tan, or go Multicam. Honestly, I respect the ACU as an American uniform worn by our Soldiers, but for use in the field, ACU's just won't cut it.
@Soldier1287 I forget the name of it but the Army was issuing a type of cammo to soldiers in Afghanistan. It looks like a mix between digital and the old woodland. I personally like Marpat the best, thats another reason why im joining the marines and not the army.
@Soldier1287 They are switching troops into Multicam for the Afghanistan terrain,it blends in way better than the ACUs. There are 3 new patterns for the Navy: The Type 1 NWUs also called "aquaflage" for its blue pattern but is not meant for camouflage,it is replacing the "dungarees" and others but not the BDUs or DCUs. The Type 2 which looks like an updated version of the desert Marpat and is only authorized for the elite Navy SEALs. And the Type 3 which is looks like an updated Woodland Marpat
@Soldier1287 Agreed, but i don't agree with copying the Marines, i personally love the Corps and would hate to see the Army copy their patterns. the Marine Corps changed its Camo's for several reasons, one was to define them self father apart from the Army, so when you see them on the street its not a "is that a soldier or a Marine?" its a "that's a soldier" and "that's a Marine"
well the difference between BDU and ACU is ACU is digital camo and BDU is not digital camo. Personally I prefer the ACU. And ACU is better in hiding especially for sniper.
not for a few years. The only Branches taht still use it are the Air Force(for about 1 more year and then its gone) and the Navy( but its pretty much gone too)
Woodland BDU's work better than the current ACU against vegetation. Why couldn't they stick witht the same color scheme but use a digital pattern? And anyway digital paterns don't work as well as traditional woodland camo. Crye Multicam blends into almost ANY surface better than ACU as well.

You are right. The ACU's do not last very long and are harder to clean and do not look sharp. Many State Defense Forces(also known as State Guard,State Military Reserves). still wear them. The TAG of each state approves what uniforms will be worn by these Title 32 troops.
weird i was born in 1981 and i use that bdu on 1999 when i went to basic. Got few pairs in case they dont produce it anymore. Also the digital woodland work good for my hunting trips.
I don't think so, I think the ACU is more intimidating than the BDU. Now days you see 12 year olds wearing BDU jackets and pants..It was losing it's respect.
i love the bdu's it so much i bought one. and when i put it on and look in the mirror,i start to tear up a little bit. remembering a once great, badass uniform.
omg i loved my bdu's! nice & starched with my shined jungle boots!!! acu's suck! made cheaply! soldiers these days have no idea on what it means to stand tall & look good
I miss that uniform a whole hellovalot. I don't care if I have press and iron my uniform. I also dont care if I have to shine my boots either. I want my old uniform back!!!!
I'm glad that the air force will keep using the BDU's for a few years yet, at least until they finally figure out the ABU. Hopefully they fix it, from what I've heard the new ABU's are extremely hot to wear right now.
Most original uniform ever made by the most intelligent army ever concieved! Greetings from australia.

one of my earliest memories was my dad picking me up from daycare in woodlands. now we both wear ACU's-- not a fan of the sleeves down thing.

I can't belive the army waisted millions of dollars on R&D just to update the army's image.
The BDU serves fine, it still keeps a satisfactory level of quality and comfort.
The BDU may of been really warm in certain conditions but the ACU was introduced far too early.

weird i was born in 1981 and i use that bdu on 1999 when i went to basic. Got few pairs in case they dont produce it anymore. Also the digital woodland work good for my hunting trips.

digital camo is a joke. the bdu is more aggressive looking and combat-like
elbannaboy 2 years ago 3
I don't think so, I think the ACU is more intimidating than the BDU. Now days you see 12 year olds wearing BDU jackets and pants..It was losing it's respect.

I miss them. But the Digitalized ACU's are so badass. I just got promoted to Corporal last week so I've had my share of memories with the BDU's.

The BDU is easier to distinquish, it stands out more and looks a lot more oblivious.
I don't know why the military didn't incorparate any of the essentials to the BDU Uniform!
The BDU's terrain darker tone looks more professional in my opinion!
Dimitri0809 2 years ago 3
BDU's are the BEST!:-D

I'm glad that the air force will keep using the BDU's for a few years yet, at least until they finally figure out the ABU. Hopefully they fix it, from what I've heard the new ABU's are extremely hot to wear right now.

Personally i prefer the BDU over any other utility uniform!
