Totally crazy. I sometimes can't understand Mr. Horowitz making his own odd transcription...well, I don't mean it's bad, I just mean...um, is that for human to play? My fingers would be torn out if I just try to play that piece! :D
Yes, astronomo16, you are right. I purchased the CD after watching this video, and noticed the many differences with Mussorgsky's original score. This version is somewhat inspired, in some pictures, in Ravel's orquestation. Thanks for correcting my mistake!
He considered Mussorgsky's original immensely introverted, and in many ways he was right. "They say I put graffiti on Mussorgsky," he said. "Well I don't give a damn! I worked hard on that transcription, and am proud of it! Ravel orchestrated it, and I pianostrated it!"
@LambChowder1 Similar to the character trait - lacking in expressiveness, reserved, restrained. It has to do with the 'color' of the music. It can be the difference of one interpretation that may be executed flawlessly and sound good...nice, yet lacks any drama and may sound a bit bland. In contrast, a musician can play a piece that fully expresses strong feelings and deep emotion. The human quality of the music comes out so that the performance is like an event or a well-told a story.
No this certainly is a transcription. More parts added than in original. In certain sections of the work, Ravel didn't add any additional parts hence, in Horowitz's transcripton we don't hear any difference whatsoever.

This IS NOT a transcription! It's the original version by Mussorgsky.

@JupiterIV what does it mean to be "immensely introverted"?
dalecampbl9 1 year ago
@dalecampbl9 This is best answered by making a comparison between Mussorgsky's original and Horowitz' transcription.
