  • Awesome!!

  • Okay guys! I just found this guy and I LOVE him! I was looking for the original 'Rainy Night In Georgia' believing it was a Ray Charles song or ??. I found Tony Joe singing it on a Dutch television show. Imagine me!? I have now been turned on to so many of his songs on YouTube. My goodness what a man! He can play and Mr. Carlton 'Achoba' Sonnier, you Sir, are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT..."The 'Blues' Tony Joe style, has no equal"!

  • @MommynMissM welcome to music for the soul , and from the soul of these great artists, can i recommend RONNIE EARLE , blues guitar maestro, JOHN BUTLER TRIO , FROM AUSSIELAND, AND ONE OF MY FAVORITES , DAVID GRISMAN ,CHECK OUT HIS AND JERRY GARCIA' S TAKE ON B, B'S , thrill is gone. ENJOY

  • Knew TJ back in Louisiana. He's from a little place near Oak Grove. He is going on 69 now but still got the hands. I'm going on 76 but I can see back in the day in the 50s' when all you had was enough. The 'Blues' Tony Joe style, has no equal

    Carlton 'Achoba' Sonnier

  • I saw Tony Joe in Toronto back in '69...at a 12 hour long music festival featuring almost any living and breathing popular artist of the day...almost...seriously...(I hadn't even ever heard of him...) and his performance was one of my favorite that day. I'm talking John Lennon, Jim Morrison, and many...more artists that performed there...Poke Salad Annie is forever blazed in my memory bank.

  • @dyskover - I was there too! Varsity Stadium - I remember Yoko getting booed off the stage....The Doors, Tony Joe, do you remember who else was there?

  • @swaneemusic1 - I was @ the 2 day 'Toronto Rock and Roll Revival' in June '69, then Eaton & Walker did a 2nd one in Sept. There's almost no mention anywhere of the 2 day festival, but they sure made a big deal of the Sept. show. Mostly I remember the 80 Vags (soon to be 'Angels') muscling in at the front of the stage and roping off the front with a 'snow fence' to keep out the riff-raff from 'their turf! Check Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee & Bo Diddley played too & many others! Great show!

  • @KingscribThanks for the reply...I remember laying on the grass at Varsity Stadium during that concert, and watching "missiles" of food and garbage projecting through the air overhead like fireworks, while listening to some of the greatest classic rock bands ever....they called it a "revival" then...there is sure one needed today!!

Shortly after that I joined the 8 pce band "Breakwater" as keyboard player and we enjoyed a couple of years of fame throughout Toronto's club circuit.

  • Swap rap or cajun, its all good.!!!

  • Thx.. Austin City Limits

  • This guy has really got the beat,Don't know why I never heard of him until recently he is amazing.

  • I don't agree with Clint1663 at all. And he can't spell "fucking". Even without the lyrics , the bass riff, his guitar and the downright FUNKINESS of the whole enterprise- this is seriously cool music.

  • MrRapid tells it like it is.....this is a priceless take on rap music that beats the hell out of anything I've heard from Snoop Dogg and the other gangstas for sure.

Tony Joe is the coolest white boy to ever do a rap tune for sure....

  • MrRapidResponse,

    agree with ya!

  • Straight back at ya brother.

    This geezer is DECENT!

  • DECENT?......You are watching the FIRST rap song......written and performed by a white boy over 30 YEARS AGO!......With regard to the "GEEZER" comment....let's see how your doin in 30 years my man?

  • I'm from London, and if you call someone a " decent geezer" it is a complement. And "geezer" is not an indication of someone's age either. I've seen Tony Joe White twice and I am a huge fan. I think you may have misinterpreted my message Sir

  • Indeed I did......My apologies....

  • I'll give my right arm if this isn't the coolest damn rap song ever made....done by a country boy from Louisiana! Have you ever heard a more infectious beat and groove than this!

This song only proves that Tony Joe White is one of those great American originals with a sound that is simply "too damn good" to ever get played on the radio in a world full of cookie-cutter clones and puppets in the top 40.

  • Nope. Cant think of any. Tony Jo is the man.

  • Just downloaded this whole show..damn, it's amazing. Music at its finest.

  • poke salad ! southern culture sang ""tony joe white playin on the radio"

  • Mud Flaps!!!

  • I can't find this song on any of his albums, too bad, it's really good!! Be a great driving song, think it's called "Swamp Rap". Go Tony, you da man!

  • whats the name of this song?

  • Seen Tony in the early 70s when CCR was doing Europe. HE made the show and still does! Factastic qual video! thanx for sharing. By the way; John F made his real revival too ! We are spoiled old basterds with this Youtube machine...

  • This is great! Well, I`ve got a copy of your best record so far: HOMEMADE ICECREAM...

  • This is called CLEAN (sound wise) kick ass shit

If you can get up and dance to TJ then you're dead.

  • Tony Joe also happens to be something no one

else has mentioned. He's a wonderful person.

One of the most down to earth people you could ever deal with. South France? Probably but he also owns a place or two in the Hills of Tennessee.

  • ..with mudflaps..

  • THIS is FANTASTIC!!!....Thank you for posting it......if this isn't the ultimate in "feel good" rock & roll, I don't know what is!!...

    Best regards, Gary.....

  • This sounds really amazing...and btw I heard this for the first time...priceless...

  • that's country rap. and this came out when urban rap did. amazing. godbless.

  • I can't figure out why this guy isn't more famous. He is an awesome performer. Terrific guitarist, awesome harmonica, and his voice is pure gold.

  • You're a wise man*. Very well said.

    * apologies if you're a woman :-)

  • not only whAT you´ve mentioned but also one of the greatest songwriters as well!

  • What do you mean "more famous"? Tony Joe wrote "Polk Salad Annie", and "Rainy Night In Georgia", for Christ's sake! Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Tina Turner, Brooks Benton, and CCR recorded his songs. He's been a celebrated songwriter/musician for over 40 years, and he makes enough money, from his royalties alone, to live in a chateau in Southern France.

Down where I'm from, in Southeast TX, the man is a minor deity.

I think he's about as famous as he wants to be, thank you very much.

  • Love this!

  • This is so Funky Groovy! I dig it!...you dig? :)

  • have never seen anyone blending harmonica into music this awesome!

TJW's music is pretty unique, keeps walking on edge of blues and rock'n'roll with special care.

listening to his best albums "home made ice creams" and "real thang" always makes me feel good bout everything,

    hes truly a legend

  • Thank you to you tubers and rspaceballs for turning me on to another great fun musician.

  • If you look up the word "smooth" in the english dictionary all it says is Tony Joe White.

  • I'd luv to see him do a gig with Jerry Reed, both great!

  • This is the best dvd I have ever seen,Sure do love this man's music. All of the songs on it are good. But this song is so original it is my favorite.

  • Tony Joe da man, that's right!

  • And everyone thinks the brothers started RAP! Tony Joe's from Oak Grove, La......30 minutes north of my hometown of Delhi, in the northeast corner of Louisiana. Tim McGraw was also born in Delhi, then moved to Start(Rayville) as a baby. Trace Adkins is from Sarepta, about 2 1/2 hrs. west of that, and Kix Brooks of Brooks & Dunn's from north La., as well as country singer Andy Griggs.

  • And people think CCR invented Swamp Rock. Those boys were from Berkeley; their feet had never set foot in a swamp! TJW deserves more airplay. He is SO underrated. That voice is a gift from God, & that's the nastiest, stankiest guitar picking I've ever heard. He was born to play music. I'm digging ALL his You Tube videos. So many people don't realize he wrote the haunting "Rainy Night In Georgia" & "Polk Salad Annie." Many EP fans think EP did it 1st & the spoken intro was ad-libbed by EP. Nope!

  • KING of the groove bay!

    Oh Yeah!!

  • Tony Joe White sat in with my band in Memphis in 1976 and sang Polk Salad Annie. (it was a regular song on my play list)

When it got to the part during the talking intro where he said "I Said POLK......SALAD" my bass player and I played that guitar lick powerfully and in unison, and Tony Joe yelled "YEAH"!

After the set he told us that he had been on the road with bands that didn't play the lick, and he was very pleased with us for remembering it.

It was a great night in Memphis!

  • Thank You, he has been around forever, check out Polk Salad Annie, it's his song.

I think he tours overseas now a days.

  • Heard his one song "Polk Salad Annie", never saw him but always thought he was a black singer...he is so awesome..love that voice..mmmm

  • I think he's cajun actually.

  • This guy is fantastic. The definition of cool. I can't believe he is so little known.

  • This guy is so cool. Nobody knows about him. Is he still around touring?

  • ya i think he is still sounds that cool too

  • he has the coolest voice i ever heard extremely funky and groovy

  • This guy's the greatest.

  • Tony Joe White should be a star...

  • wonder why he is so unknown he has probably the coolest voice i have ever heard its sad how so many people havent heard this kind of music
