Love Cee-Lo but do not like this "distortion" of this great song by a legend of music with a beautiful voice. Must say how disappointed I am to hear what has been done to it - listen to the original to understand my sadness
They were not trying to ruin the original track by creating this one. The original track can still be purchased and listened to, and obviously it's a great track.
All they were trying to do to give it a more modern feel to appeal to the newer generations, hence the name of the album.
So if you don't like it, then don't buy it. But don't go around wasting your time bashing the album. Some people actually enjoy it, including myself. So cut it out because you just sound rude.
WTF people? Original song is written by Billy Strayhorn, and ONLY PERFORMED by Nat King Cole. Who's selling out? I Love jazz, but in this case It's clear that this remake is a step forward. You may not like it, but if you can't hear it's good, then I'm sorry, but you're deaf. BTW all artists(actors, painters...)share and extensively use each one's experience. Every good musician used what he has heard, and so did Nat King Cole.
P.S. Why does every pissed off jerk thinks his oppinion has weight?
Yeah ...i'm not crazy about it but...I wouldnt call it crap . I am a fan of Cee Lo and he is something different. Just the fact that he has HEARD this song and likes it is good if you ask me.
REAL DOPE TRACK.. ALL YOU OLD DUSTY FUCKS NEED TO QUIT CRYING YOU CAN STILL GO LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL.. NO ONES MAKING YOU LISTEN TO THIS... THIS WASNT INTENDED FOR YOU LOL... THIS IS INTENDED FOR A RELAVANT AUDIENCE.. SORRY BUT YOU GUYS ARE PAST DUE!
As a performer of this song and others in the Nat Cole cataloge, I do love Lush Life in it's original form. On the other hand though, I am a big fan of the Verve Remix projects. This remix ranks right up there with those. What a fresh new face on an iconic jazz piece. Kudos to the mix master. This song still astounds me in the single fact that Billy Strayhorn was only 16 when he wrote it!
To everyone foaming at the mouth because Nat King Cole "sold out" or because this "music is crap":
Take a deep breath. Relax. It's just a new take on an old song and doesn't in any way disrespect or demean the original -- in fact, it's likely this song was sampled because of its quality.
Personally, I think both are good. Nat King Cole's is the original and probably took more time and effort to write, yet Cee Lo's take is still fun. Relax and take it for what it is -- a tribute.
lets just "have fun" with nats music, lets try different stuff and if it comes out shit, well nats dead anyway. he won't object.Of course there is no one to "protect" him from people who wanna trample on his good name and great work.
His daughters are worthless as protectors of his portfolio, what nat needs most is a good jewish lawyer. A lawyer who would say "why don't you (see low green) and kanye raid mc hammer's music"
pure, unadulterated crap, i dont' believe this needs to be introduced to a new "younger" audience. It needs to be left alone. Some idiot puts a modern "beat" to it and everyone yells "bravo" Why dont' people put a modern dance beat to "white christmas" or "rhapsody in blue"? They wont Because people who have sense won't allow it. Nat was black, so now suddenly it's ok for a black guy to come in and "liven" it up. I blame natalie cole for this crap
i get the idea of bridging the music generational gap... but man i find this hard to listen to. lush life is such a brilliant song with epic lyrics, and this arrangement takes the lyrics out of order? twelve o clock tales rhymes so sweetly with jazz and cocktails and they omitted the first verse? maybe i'm a purist but this doesn't do justice to nat or lush life at all. sad.
Note this was filmed in the early 60's s the guy sits down facing closer while the blond sits with her back toward Nat so not to offend the viewers of the time period. Interracial things were frowned on then. Great musical arrangement talented man!
I really hate that the two top rated comments here, that I have to look at every time I want to watch this, are so hateful. Nat's original arrangement is brilliant. this is very nice too, maybe even brilliant too. does it simplify the song? yeah, but it finds a different power and it still manages to get to the feeling in the music, if you have ears.
by the way: how many kids do listen to nat today? not the majority, right? and how many kids do search for him on youtube? not the majority, right? so if they listen to this present-day version they encounter nat's music and maybe are interested in other songs of him. so it's due to cee-lo
i can' get why people drag this nice joint in the mud. as a producer i can tell you IT IS COMPLEX to make a remake like this. c'mon, do you really think cee-lo sat in front of his personal computer, pressed on a button called "remake" and then he had it done?
nah man nah, there's hard work behind it. a new opus comes into being without competing against the prototype. it's a new interpretation, and it's still art just like the original version. cee-lo put a lot of passion into his work.
@MrDavePhilly oh my god, THANK YOU! People hate on producers and remakes (which is different than a remix) without knowing a thing about how difficult it is
i think this was the only good remix of the entire RE:Generations album. which is a shame, nat king cole was the man. good thing cee-lo from gnarls barkley did this justice.
@aknowneemus Jazz critics of the late 50's criticized Nat King Cole for "selling out" when he made most of the songs that garnered him recognition. You are exactly like those people. Did you know that Nat King Cole did covers of songs written by musicians before him? Is he a sellout? Its like people like you are just reincarnated every few years for the sole purpose of hating everything that ventures outside of your minescule little box. Im done now, wont blow up your inbox any more. thanks.
@aknowneemus one more thing: NKC didnt write the lyrics to most of his songs. Musicians use eachother to make great music, and that music is bigger than them and us. These artists (such as Cee Lo) used the voice or music of a man that used the words of other men.
@aknowneemus ITS CaLLED HIPHOP DUMMY... hip hop was created with a couple samples, drums and a cut... thats what makes the genre different from all the others... we base our music off samples... and we always give original artist credit and royalties... thats why your either love hip hop or hate it... and if u dont know the whole story then u should be talking...
@aknowneemus WTF people? Original song is written by Billy Strayhorn, and ONLY PERFORMED by Nat King Cole. Who's selling out? Hey guys - Good guess (I LOVE Motion) but as one of the co-directors I can say no, we did NOT use Motion. This is almost completely After Effects. Although there's a little bit of classic stop motion here and there (i-stop motion was used) and a couple of 3D elements (Maya I believe, but that was my partner Terence's work so I'll get back to you on that). The editing software was Avid. (Yeah, I know everyone uses Final Cut, but sometimes we kick it old school over here at Detox.) That's it.
Waited on this album for a minute.. went to Best Buy today and picked up their only copy. This shit is bananas.. NKC had a phenomenal voice. They got all sorts of people in on this project and it turned out awesome. You all need to check into this gem.. don't sleep on it.

how is this disrespect?
you do realize that when people change the song a bit
its appeals to more people
which means that more people discover his music
honestly without this song, i would not have found out about him
if you hate this so much, why comment on it
and not only that, you guys are not nat king cole so do not speak for him.

poor mr. cole sold out by his daughters to make a buck.
why don't they just write their own music instead of stealing what someone else took the time to write.
call it sampling, remix, or whatever
bottom line is, if these guys are so talented why don't they write original compositions?
