Here's a quick question. If you install the switch, is it really necessary to clip the mute pin? And here's a tip so if you want to make it so you could chose what direction it scans in, install a SPDT on/off/on switch. I'll be posting a video on how I did this soon.
@EVPChanneler You can find them at Radio Shack, just look for a Single Post/Double Throw Mini Switch. I have found out that the switch is a lil larger than the one used in this vid so I have come across some difficulties fitting it in the radio's case.
I modified my 12-587 unit after watching this video. Before, it would stop scanning every minute or two. Now it stopped once in a two hour test. Great video! Thanks for the help!
@13bobw1 Thanks glad it helped. I tested it to 45 minutes with out stopping. With that 2hour test you should be good to go for a quick session on location with out it having the annoying stops. I used to hate that!
@ParaSpinnProductions After the first test, I ran it for another hour and a half last night and it never stopped scanning. This thing is fantastic! Thanks again!
hi there i just got my radioshack 12-587 opened ready to hack and there is a grey ribbon type cable now where the pins should be do you know how to hack this.
I bought one of the newer-versions of the 12-587 which does not have the pins but has the 10-wire ribbon that akeames mentioned above. I managed to untangle the two circuit boards enough that I could see the 'labels' for each wire. They are as follows: ST_DET, SAT_IN, (not sure as first letter is obscured by the glue), CND, 3V3, MUTE, R_POW, DIO, SCK, GND, AMP_P. I tried cutting the 'mute' wire after reading other comments, but no effect. Can anyone shed any light based on the above notes?
@jeffrielly take a close look at the printed circuit board... where the buttons from the front of the radio match up to the PCB. All the button does (when it is pushed) is close the connection telling the radio to scan. All I did was solder wires from one side of the where the button hits the PCB and the other wire to the other side of where the button contacts. The switch keeps it shorted out so it will never stop scanning.
@jeffrielly That is correct, the only thing with soldering the switch is that what ever button you solder it to is the way it will scan. Example if you soldered a switch to the down button. When you flip the switch it will only scann in the down direction. It should not matter since your still supplying the raw audio that the spirits need to communicate.
@ghostman1on1 I just read on one of the Real Time Spirit Communication forumns that Radio Shack made a change to the model. I haven't heard yet if anybody made a hack of it yet. One person returned it and found an old model on the shelf that was still hackable. I don't know what to tell you... either hang on and wait until somebody hacks it, return it if there is an old model, or find the new way to hack the new model # and become world famous!!
@ParaSpinnProductions I have the new version of the model. I'm trying to figure it out now. I believe it to be one of the two wires on the left side of the wire ribbon that needs to be clipped, but at this point, I.m not sure which one. :-/
Good luck and let us know when it works... I wonder why Radio shack keep changing their radio models. THe whole ghost box thing has to increase their sales and profits?
Yeah you could do that with just the wires. When it is shorted the rest of the button features like changing bands etc are like when you slide the lock switch up. So when you want to make a change just untwist the wires.
thanks. i ended up finding a mini on/off switch and it works like a charm. i did have to heavily modify the case with a dremil and a hot glue gun to get it to fit. ugly but functional lol.
@damname101 Yeah I had the perfect spot and drilled a hole too but it wouldn't fit. LOL. Oh well glad it keeps scanning for you now. I was going to try and utilize one of the switches that came with it like the lock switch on the side of the radio, but it would really get involed.
question: is this switch a simple on/off switch? went to radio shack and they shrugged and said...whats that? could the same thing be accomplished by simply soldering the wires to the board and shorting them together when i need to stay scanning? reason i ask is i might have a switch that could work buts its a simple on/off.
@ParaSpinnProductions aw too late lol oh well. I just wanted to give this whole idea a try, I'm taking a trip to a local haunted hotel this weekend and thought a ghost box would be fun
@ParaSpinnProductions Yeah I will. I have some pretty awesome footage on a video cam from the same hotel but it's an older camera and has no means of connection to a computer. I'm pretty confident I will pick up some great audio though :)
@MadAtTheSky Yeah hack it like you normally would. The mute pin, mutes the radio scan when you push the button to scan to the next strongest channel. Bending the mute pin allows the raw audio to come through from between the channels. The white noises, so to say.

Hello. Do you know how to make a radioshack radio model 12-587 (The newer type with a ribbon of wires instead of pegs) into a ghost box?

Has anyone figured out how to hack the new version yet?

I have NEVER had mine to stop scanning because I use that magic button called LOCKED on the side.

Has anyone figured out the new version of this radio and how to hack it?
I went to my radio schack today. The woman said she has a employee coming in next week, that she thinks he will be able to figure it out.
They said they wil alsol make calls around their stores and see if any employee knows how to convert it.
