Nice video, I have a question. If you buy an app from the store (one which is NOT included when u buy the mac), for example Pages (assuming its not included when purchase), can you use it on 2 or more computers? Say you are already using it on a macbook pro, do you get a free download for mac mini and so on? Or would I have to buy it again?
Great video. Do you think the standard Mac Mini would be suitable for basic use, internet browsing and a little bit of poker? I usually have other analysis programs running in background and maybe looking to install windows through bootcamp too. Sufficient specs to do this?? Not really looking on playing high graphics games...
I was thinking about getting one of these just for running minecraft servers is it good for that stock I'm goona run a 24/7 server wich will probably get at most 200 ppl
@MrBLAHBLAH778 That really depends a lot on what you will be using it for...I would personally go for the MacBook Pro 15in because its portable and extremely powerful...You won't see much difference in performance between the iMac and the MacBook Pro so you might as well have the portability...Apple has such a sick line up of Macs theses days its really hard to decide...Hope this helped!
Hi! would you recomend this for video and image editing? I'm from Argentina and i'm between this one ($599) or a big desktop PC with and i5 2500k, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd and 1gb vga, heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp, of course the pc is better on the numbers, but a Mac is a Mac.
@aRAUSEr7 The mac mini in the vid is the basic one where the memory used for graphics rendering is shared with other resources on the system, which is why it has a low FPS - if you are just browsing and watching movies its good but if you want to play crysis it's not :)
I am planning on getting one next month with the upgraded GPU (AMD) which will give you an independent memory use for graphics processing, much faster performance then the standard one, but ofcourse more expensive.
Hi Michael, Thanks for the response, I've narrowed it down to either a MacBook Air or Pro 11-13" version, and will continue using my iPod Touch via an HRT iStreamer into the system. Once again your Video's have been a great source of insight. Enjoy the weekend. Regards, Oscar
Hi Michael, As a neighbor of yours from Harper Woods, Mi. I've to ask you several question as I'm looking to use either an iPad 2 with a mini Mac or MacBook Pro 13" to listen to tracks that aren't available on Vinyl via my stereo system. I've been told that I'd be able to access my iTunes library on the iPad 2, as I'd like to get Audiophile quality downloads from HD Tracks as well as a few other sites. In your mind which would be a better way to go?, as I seriously don't wish to look at a MacBo
@NosTubes58 I'm not sure what type of audio files you want to listen to, but I can tell you that a MacBook Pro is far more flexible in terms of what files you can playback. Audio formats supported by the iPad: HE-AAC (V1 and V2), AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV. FLAC is not supported.
Nice vid Mike! Did you have auto white balance on, some of the screens seem to blow out during the video. Again you are forcing me to contemplate grabbing a Mac Mini! :( My wallet is crying right now haha.
@TekBeatTV I have auto-exposure on. I feel like an idiot right now because I don't know how to lock it while filming without holding a button. I have to break out the manual (hate doing that).
@DetroitBORG haha ic, well it's a Nikon so I can't offer much help on that end :(. But if I recall correctly I think you stated on twitter awhile back ago that you figured it out ;).
@DetroitBORG haha, well you have a Nikon 5100 right? Should be as simple as pressin Menu, go down to white balance and set your white balance to a specific mode other than auto or preset. In my case for my Canon I have a mode "Daylight" that sets it to 5200 temp. Depending on the lighting that you use, set it to that setting (flourescent, tungsten etc.). Let me know if that works.
@TechThoughts Your kidding, you think $35 is expensive for 8GB of ram? I'm in the UK, I paid about £80 from Crucial for 4GB for my mini last year, it's since come down to about £49 for 8GB.
I'm not sure I really like this new mac line without optical drive, I mean, games still needs dvds, There are a lot of dvds movies, blurays, If I want to watch the movie bonus on my mac, if this new thing, I can't, I have to buy the external optical drive and I guess this is so 90's, I don't know, maybe I'll have to get used to it.
Could you please add 8GB RAM to your mac mini and test the gaming performance again? That way you will get 512MB shared memory and you should benefit from it at high resolutions. BTW does anybody know how much the shared memory is at 16GB RAM?
Keep it up,loved the forum vid you participated in...I'm trying to to purchase product for product to keep up,but your a Pro,where as it's just a expensive hobby for me.I donate any of my year or older Apple products to The MB Society for the Disabled, those kids love them! to bad it is so expensive to get a SSD drive for the mac mini, but hopefully in time when SSD is cheap and common place mac mini's will come standard with SSD?
super cool you are doing a upgrade video of the mac mini's ram to 8 GB! will be very interesting to see if more ram improves performance and bench mark scores?
I like the new mac mini and i don't miss the optical drive. I loved your video of upgrading your ram in your iMac using the crucial.com site. Your video helped me help a friend upgrade ram in his white core2duo 19 in. iMac. 2GB only cost my friend $40 at the crucial website.
Wow, when did a core i5, with 2 gigs of ram become a crap computer? Last year this would have beat the MacBook pro, this year it's crap? I think apple is starting to make the same mistake pc's did, faster and faster for no reason. People are going to catch on to this game soon.
@DetroitBORG That's totally incorrect, all external Bluray drives should work, I have an LG one, OSX will read the disk, if you have the right software you can also burn a bluray, Toast for example. As for watching a bluray movie, you can't, at least not easily, you can rip it and watch from hard drive or boot into Windows with Bootcamp, there is a app out there that can play movies in OSX but right now it's like alpha software, so doesn't work well.
great video ended up getting the mac pro 13" after waiting for month for the new air i decided to go with the pro it was the extra storage on the hhd that finally swang it for me i was wondering do you know a good way to have your iTunes on two macs and be able to sync your iPod two both and keep them in sync lol heres hoping iCloud is gone sort this out once and for all
@aberbear Unfortunately, the iPod can only be synced to 1-library, and indeed iCloud will help to solve this issue, assuming you move your library to iCloud (or you buy your music entirely from iTunes).
It doesnt matter how long you have had the MBP. OS X, and especially Lion, are very very light weight OS's. Apple does not underclock their systems for battery usage.
