actually, if you listen to the commentary, in the original version of l4d all the campaigns were linked (after no mercy the helicopter pilot gets infected and it crashes, etc.) but they scrapped it in the end because beta testers said the ending made them feel like they didn't really accomplish anything. not a smart choice in my opinion, but it's fine.
