I don't really see this song as being about him being lost in the midst of his newfound success, but about the trepidation of loving someone. Being fearful of giving all of one's self, going with feeling of those first few months of elation and then falling into the pains that come with a relationship with another human being. Sort having loved and lost ( I know very cliche), but mustering the courage to give it another try. JMO ;)
