Jazz music in general, from old swing, modern, fusion Jazz, just about anything still have solid fan support in Japan.
Many coffee shops in the big cities play those music all day and even take your request. You can also find many CD never been released in the US. Another reason for you to visit, if you are Jazz fan.
As a Japanese, sorry that I still must go to USA to enjoy real Jazz. In 70, I was at a small club in NY. "the Guitar" owned by Kenny Burrel had Ron Carter and Jim Hall on the stage. The stage was small just enough for two. The place was small they were just a couple of feet away. But music was perfect. It can happen only in USA. I even coud ask Jim to play his favorite by saying "Hey you haven't played my funny valentine yet". He said "Yeah right" and played it. Precious memory.
Jazz lives only in USA Rock as well. Jazz n Rock are international yet very local. We copy them in Europe n Japan but can't go further. Music of USA is very fertile with various categories like Blues, Country, Gospel, Soul, Jazz, Rock, Latin etc and they keep evolving by stimulating each other. That's why Jazz and Rock were born in the States and why they stop being what they are in any other part of the world. That's how I look at music. But I love any music in the world also.
