Too bad the space shuttle is a front for the real space program that began with moon colonization back in the 1980s and mars colonization in the 1990s. I cant believe people really believe that after the moon missions were stopped that we never went back and we settle for the space shuttle bus as our program. People would flip out if they saw the real space craft we have.
Be sure to check out a small museum that's just a block from the park. It's a small, old store front - but there were guys handing out flyers for it when we were there. It's packed with old memorbilia, broken parts, photos... but the best part is the retired astronauts and engineers who have amassed the collection and spend their time there, explaning what stuff is, telling stories and just talking to you. It's absolutely fantastic - almost as cool as the launch (but not quite).
Do you have to pay in order to be able to watch the launch? And if yes, how much? Because I heard you could buy tickets, but I'm not quite sure which place it's for.
Finding a space to sit or stand isn't really a problem. If you'd like front row, be there 5 or 6 hours before launch (this will also net you a close parking space). If you're fine with something other than front row, 2 hours prior is fine. If walking 5 or 6 blocks is OK, you can find parking.
The park has restrooms, but no food vendors. There is a Burger King ~3 blocks away, but other than that food is scarce. (I think the April launch is ~ 6:30a, so not sure BK would be open.)
Yah think!! The last launch they had at 4:15am and it shook our house like we were having an earthquake. And we live about 9 miles from the launch pad....
I was lucky enough to see a space launch at night probably about 15 years ago. It looks way cooler than that in person. It literally makes the sky bright blue like it's mid afternoon. It's really remarkable.
That was awesome! Night launches are way better than day launches! Shame about the cloud cover. At the beginning there it looked like the Sun lighting up the sky like that, it almost went into daylight! I want to see one of those someday although I probably won't because the shuttles retire in 2010-2014 and I will only be 18 in 2010.
The crowd's reaction is priceless! Too bad the cloud deck was so low. Still, an amazing sight, and even more so in person. I witnessed the only night launched Saturn V (Apollo XVII) from Titusville. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I was watching from Titusville that evening too. I posted two videos from my viewing area further south of you if you care too see. Wasn't it amazing how calm the water got around 2AM? I could have sworn the shuttle reached the clouds in like 5 seconds it happened so fast, but it was actually like 4 times longer than that
it's so cool the way the crickets all shut up at 1:25
