Ten-codes, properly known as ten signals, are code words used to represent common phrases in voice communication, particularly by law enforcement and in Citizens' Band (CB) radio transmissions.
The codes, developed in 1937 and expanded in 1974 by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International (APCO), allow for brevity and standardization of message traffic.
Besides being a highly versatile actor, he's credited with creating the "10 Code" for law enforcement, and, later on, other agencies. It all started with "10-4."
Thank you for posting this. While in college, I worked at a Stater Bros. supermarket near Victoria Ave. in Riverside, Calif. He was a frequent customer. Gruff and sometimes unshaven and disheveled, he was never mean or disrespectful. I wanted to tell him on a few occasions how much I liked Highway Patrol, but could never get up the courage. Now I'd add All The King's Men too. He did buy a lot of booze and had been drinking before many of his shopping visits. I am sure it shortened his life.
@curtismapman I watched Highway Patrol reruns every day after school. I live 2 blocks from the Stater Bros on Mary near Victoria. We were always proud that Brodriick lived here . Not so proud of Jack Klugman.(after Quincy 's debut.)
Friend, he is, 'cos you have remembered him, I remember him, and many others do too.
He is great in all our memories, what greater accolade can we give to this fine actor, a mortal, who now lives forever in the ether, and in our memories:-)
He did not invent 10 code.
