I remember that those gates are very heavy ! We were 2 handed and my missus usually sets the locks but she could not move these gates at all. (November 2006)
Nice to see a fellow 106 year old! We were lucky to have to company of another boat allowing me to stay in my rightful place at the blunt end. I think you're right we wouldn't have wanted to tackle those gates unaided.
It certainly looks a lot different now with all of the recent redevelopment.
