I know my history about the unification of British and Italian Somaliland, but Ogaden wasn't even part of Ethiopia it was part of Italian Somaliland before WW2.

There are over 80 ethnicites in Ethiopia. The South, along Omo river, has one of the most mixed group of ethnicites on our continent, they have been pretty much protected from foreign influences since all the foreign Wars came from the North & East, meaning that Amharas, Tigrays and Oromos were the ones fighting them.

@Keezih The government are fighting separatist rebels and some supporters, you make it sound as people are going on hunt against any random local which isn't the case. The Ogadens are mainly Nomads, they have expanded and now claim 1/3 of Ethiopia. This is for 5 million ppl, out of 75 million which shares 2/3. It also a much needed buffer zone for the unstable Somalia. The killings you speak of also goes both ways, the rebels are attacking unarmed civilians as well.

Did you know Ethiopia probably has one of the worst Human Rights in the world? It is focused on the mostly on Somali and Oromo region but also Amhar, Afar and Tigray but mostly in those two regions. Ethiopian troops are burning down homes of the civillians, confiscating livestock and item possesion, raping women, killing men, public executions and destroying villages, limiting. There are limited waterholes

@Keezih Actually, the official Somali population in 2007 was 4.6 million people. Yet the ONLF number around 3-4000 soldiers, that mainly hide among the civilians and do "hit-and-run" attacks. Against military and unarmed civilians, this is a fact that they even admitted to.
Yea they calculated Somalias population to be around 9m before the civil war and now in 2007 they calculated 9m something too so their statistics must be very wrong because most women in East Africa have around 4-6+ children yea some die in young age but many survive. Somalia isn't really as bad as the news tell you I have been there a few years ago in Mogadishu and 6 days ago a cousin visited, they have a good school system and clean water and food. The only problem is the islamists.

there is no chance for Ethiopian government to calculate that there is 5million but there could be more or less since Ethiopian famine has infected the Ogaden region too. Ethiopian government is putting all the money on major towns such as Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Jijiga and more. There is no improvement in todays Ethiopia other than in major cities. Rest of the country has to rely on food aid or self producted food and water. Its the same as Sudan, North is just exploiting the South.

The government is putting MOST of the Budget in Agriculture, that means the rural population which is around 80% of the total population. It seems like the major towns are the ones getting a big share, but thats based on the flow of private investors in those towns, specially the South (Nazret and Awassa).
@Keezih The investments in the agricultural will take a couple of years before it shows in the statistics. The goal is to double the number of crops within a 5-7 year period. Remember that the Ogden region is the driest, they receive a lot more than they produce. The highlands are also affected by the lack of rain, specially Northern Amhara and Tigray regions. Several irrigation projects are in process in all states, the future is bright but it will be tough for a while more. "only" 8% rely.
@Keezih The Somali regional government are very effective though. They are working to increased potable water coverage from 40% to 60% this year, the plan is to have an 100% coverage within 5 years - that's better than all states in Ethiopia. I can give you several other example which I am sure you ain't aware of.
It would be better for ONLF to develop their region and live in Peace, like the vast majority already are doing.

I already wrote that before B-somaliland and I-Somaliland unified there was no Somalia retard. But Ogaden was a part of Italian East Africa and not Ethiopia. But in WW2 Italy took over Ethiopia and then when the British was going to take back the lost territory of British Somaliland, they needed help from Ethiopia and when Ethiopia helped they were granted Ogaden.

This was something the elders always told the kids when guests would come, a form of hospitality especially for the case of foreign travellers. Since this was a common phrase amongst the people, the land got titled Soo-maal and then later Soo-malia and the people Somali. (this is a history lesson I was taught as a kid)

@Keezih Ethiopia is a country of over 80 ethnic groups. How many countries would you create? Besides, the majority of the biggest ethnic groups are very mixed, both blood and where they live. Despite having so many different cultures, it's still a relatively stable country.
Ethnic diversity is a good thing, it's a strength, not to mention economically in form of tourism. They love the "mixed" south and the historical North.
Look at South Somalia, ONE religion and ppl = 20 yrs of wars.

Somalia was once the best develop country in Africa and Mogadishu was the capital of Africa and was known as "The white pearl of the Indian Ocean".
The downfall was that the dictator who took controll of the country in 1970~ something killed the many people from somali clans except his own so afterwards they got divided and they every clan wanted the power, so after Ogaden War, Siad Barre was weakened because Russia chose to help Ethiopia and they rebelled.

The Ogadens are mainly Nomads, they have expanded and now claim 1/3 of Ethiopia. This is for 5 million ppl, out of 75 million which shares 2/3. It also a much needed buffer zone for the unstable Somalia. The killings you speak of also goes both ways, the rebels are attacking unarmed civilians as well.

@Keezih Besides, there are Regional politics in Ethiopia today. Policies that affects the Somali state are made by Somalis in the regional government.
There are a lot of developments that is taking place in form of health clinics, schools, access to water etc. This is of course not stuff that ONLF will post on their propaganda sites. You might see ONLF as heros, but only thing they are doing is slowing down the development process.

ONLF aren't heroes but they are freedom fighters, they fight for independence, they just dont wanna be a part of Ethiopia. Somalis in Ogaden dont wanna be a part of Ethiopian unity because they're not Ethiopians, they're Somalis therefore their choice would be independence from Ethiopia.

The locals are understanding that what they need is peace. The support for ONLF are declining, their troops number around 3000, including foreigners - that's not impressive considering a population of 5 million people. Just so you know, the population in Dire are 46% Oromos, only 24% Somalis.

Did you know Ethiopia probably has one of the worst Human Rights in the world? It is focused on the mostly on Somali and Oromo region but also Amhar, Afar and Tigray but mostly in those two regions. ... and this Ogaden your talking about is Jijiga no other city/town is like Jijiga or Dire Dawa, and ONLF arent bombing civilians they are rebelling against the government and protecting the civillians from the army.. There are no development in Ogaden region except for Jijiga, they are only exploiting the natural resources, possible oil reserves in the Ogaden. Ofcourse the ONLF rebells should resist this since its their resources. There are probably more than 5 million by now.

@Keezih Actually, the official Somali population in 2007 was 4.6 million people. Yet the ONLF number around 3-4000 soldiers, that mainly hide among the civilians and do "hit-and-run" attacks. Against military and unarmed civilians, this is a fact that they even admitted to.

Yea they calculated Somalias population to be around 9m before the civil war and now in 2007 they calculated 9m something too so their statistics must be very wrong because most women in East Africa have around 4-6+ children yea some die in young age but many survive. Somalia isn't really as bad as the news tell you I have been there a few years ago in Mogadishu and 6 days ago a cousin visited, they have a good school system and clean water and food. The only problem is the islamists.

@Keezih The old calculations in 1994 was pure madness, it wasn't well done. There is no way near that number you give. The Somalis in Somalia are around 10 million I believe. I was talking about the Somali population in Ethiopia, that is around 4.6, not the total Somalis in East Africa.
I am sure there are some good peaceful regions in Somalia as well, but like you mention, the Islamists aka foot soldiers for terror-cells are slowly transforming Somalia into the mess we see in Afghanistan.

I cannot show a picture because I dont have any, but the Ogaden region is very strict, reporters aren't allowed to enter because of the information about human rights they will find there and the dangerous rebells might attack them. I never thought Ethiopia was a develop country I know it isn't. The reason for this is the current government, there was a president who wanted to unify Ethiopia and he made Ethiopia better. But now you can't say it is good and its not developing.

I would say having one of the fastest growing economies in the World IS developing (slowly). What's good in Ethiopias case is that the growth are spread among the population and sectors.
Like I said thought, we have a long way to go, at least we are lucky to have a government that isn't corrupted by African standards. We are seeing the development in form of hydroelectric dams, roads and other infrastructures that is being built.

@Keezih I feel sorry for Somalia being the battle field for the ongoing proxy-war. The Islamists are being powered as long as foreign "western" powers are in Somalia, they unite instead of fighting each other.
At the same time, the West, AU, IGAD, etc are worried of Somalia turning into a terror-heaven. So it's a vicious circle - best would be if everyone counted to 10 and left at the same time. :-)

there is no chance for Ethiopian government to calculate that there is 5million but there could be more or less since Ethiopian famine has infected the Ogaden region too. Ethiopian government is putting all the money on major towns such as Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Jijiga and more. There is no improvement in todays Ethiopia other than in major cities. Rest of the country has to rely on food aid or self producted food and water. Its the same as Sudan, North is just exploiting the South.

The government is putting MOST of the Budget in Agriculture, that means the rural population which is around 80% of the total population. It seems like the major towns are the ones getting a big share, but thats based on the flow of private investors in those towns, specially the South (Nazret and Awassa).

@Keezih The investments in the agricultural will take a couple of years before it shows in the statistics. The goal is to double the number of crops within a 5-7 year period. Remember that the Ogden region is the driest, they receive a lot more than they produce. The highlands are also affected by the lack of rain, specially Northern Amhara and Tigray regions. Several irrigation projects are in process in all states, the future is bright but it will be tough for a while more. "only" 8% rely.

They are working to increased potable water coverage from 40% to 60% this year, the plan is to have an 100% coverage within 5 years - that's better than all states in Ethiopia. I can give you several other example which I am sure you ain't aware of.
It would be better for ONLF to develop their region and live in Peace, like the vast majority already are doing.

I already wrote that before B-somaliland and I-Somaliland unified there was no Somalia retard. But Ogaden was a part of Italian East Africa and not Ethiopia. But in WW2 Italy took over Ethiopia and then when the British was going to take back the lost territory of British Somaliland, they needed help from Ethiopia and when Ethiopia helped they were granted Ogaden.

There are only ethnic Somalis in this "Somaliland" and we united. And Ogaden is 99% Somali and it always belonged to SOMALI PEOPLE because there were no real countries before colonization in Africa. They are nomads so what? It is still our country because Somalis have always lived there. So its ours.

If you had read your own history you would know that in when WW2 started Italy colonized and took over British Somaliland and Ethiopia, but because Ethiopia helped attacking the Italians they were granted Ogaden, it wasn't part of Ethiopia until 1940 something before that it was with Italian Somaliland. @Kip73 I understand where your coming from, but the suffix and prefix in the english language doesn't apply to everything. If that was the case then we would call a person from bangladesh a bangladeshian. Obviously it doesn't apply so they are addressed as a Bangladeshi or in some cases bangali. I'm well aware "somalian" sounds correct in the english ear, however you will never hear a native somali who is aware of their roots refer to themselve as such.

@Kip73 Also, if you look up the history of the word Somali you will learn that originated from the "soo maal" which means to go milk the she-camel. This was something the elders always told the kids when guests would come, a form of hospitality especially for the case of foreign travellers. Since this was a common phrase amongst the people, the land got titled Soo-maal and then later Soo-malia and the people Somali. (this is a history lesson I was taught as a kid)
