  • Hauntingly beautiful and almost surreal...I love this.

  • A male alto doesn't sound like a woman, the coloring is different. If you're tone deaf then nothing will convince you. His is the best in the world, the voice is clear throughout. David Daniels' middle voice is scratchy

  • white christmas brought me here, wow hes amazing!

  • Scholl is AWESOMEEEEEEE

Vivaldi, prova a rinascere!

  • Scholl 's beheerste stemgebruik, z'n timbre en zuiverheid maken hem tot 's werelds beste counter tenor.

  • 6 dislikers. They have to be family not to like this.

  • @Conciencia1488 No. He does not sing like a girl. He is a countertenor, a male singer whose vocal range is comparable to a soprano. I've had the fortune of hearing him twice in London, and his powerful, heavenly voice has always lifted the little hairs of my skin. Only an ignorant, infinitely moronic mexican like you who can't even write English properly can make such an idiotic, macho commentary. Do yourself a favour and drink a bottle of antifreeze. These pearls are not made for you.

Incredible!!!

  • how can andreas be so awesome!?!?!? omg! every performance a new feeling in my soul!

  • A beautiful piece and a fine interpretation!

  • This is as beautiful as the Mona lisa, His voice is heavenly.....

  • no feeling ....... Soul is the important thing in this song .... i can't find it from him

  • wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

  • Divine

  • Why are we wasting time having an argument over some dumbass comment when we should be discussing how incredible the voice of this man is and the depth of emotion he has?

  • Robbybox . It's indeed your choice to encourage hatred ...However, ahave seen such comments before so here my usual wikipedia quote ...According to the Freedom Forum Organization, legal systems, and society at large, recognize limits on the freedom of speech, particularly when freedom of speech conflicts with other values or rights.Limitations to freedom of speech may follow the "harm principle" or the "offense principle", for example in the case of pornography or "hate speech"...

  • Hello Youtube! It is really necessary to allow/keep gay bashing comments here?

  • @Deadseafruit0 noooo you can bash everything and everyone on YouTube exCEPT gay people. Gay people are exempt.

Freedom of speech works both ways, you know.

  • Largo was one of James' enemies...it means slow..hugh.

  • very nice

  • Vivaldi!!! And the Performer's voice!!!

  • fierysensual

I actually am a classical singer. First, I'm convinced he is a falsetto singer. Second, I was commenting on his lack of amplification because usually in a matured man's voice, the falsetto (or head voice for your liking) can not hold its own above an entire orchestra. The voice is usually weak and/or strained and lacks support and power. Andreas holds his own in this and lets the melody soar over the orchestra and his voice is not forced or weak at all. it's very impressive

  • @LeftyHendrix93 Yes! finally someone that understands! lol

yeah im a counter tenor and it is using your falsetto or even head voice

but whats even cooler is that the countertenor voice has a unique timbre

over other voice classifications.... if trained correctly a countertenor doesnt really sound like a womens voice (it can i suppose) so it kind of slices through an acoustically perfected setting lol think of it as the oboe of the vocal world, countertenors dont need to strain to be heard ;]

  • @LeftyHendrix93 I believe it may have to do with the fact that the entire string section is "muted" using "piombi" over the strings... isn't?

  • @LeftyHendrix93 "head voice" is not the same as a falsetto, and yes, Scholl is using a falsetto as I doubt he was castrated prepubescently.

  • This piece sends violent chills down my spine every time I hear it. It is one of the most powerful of all Vivaldi's movements. Andreas Scholl is certainly one of the best voices for it.

  • @ScientiaVeritasEtLux

This is why it is called a Counter tenor ;)

I sing in a professional choir i Denmark, and our alto-group sometimes get help from a pro counter tenor when they need some ekstra power :P

  • FOR me the best nisi dominus is from Teressa Berganza

maybe one of the best vocal piece i ever heard

  • @tomyk49 I have heard Berganza in Cosi fan tutte in Paris and I loved her. I can't find her nisi dominus in YouTube... thanks to give me a tip. Up to now I have always Andreas Scholl interpretation but for Vivaldi you need a voice softer and Philippe Jaroussky is certainly the best at the moment...

  • @ScientiaVeritasEtLux You're absolutely right, but I recommend this piece too, is a remake of Emmanuelle Santorromana, its neoclassic, be what you think, ciaooo!!!!

  • @ScientiaVeritasEtLux sorry, his name is "Opera", by "Emmanuelle Santorromana", bye!, is on youtube too!, bye!!!!!!!!!You'll tell me!!!!!!!!

  • And for all, I recommend a remake neoclassic of Emmanuelle Santorromana!!,

  • wow black cello

  • What a rich sound and without any amplification! Such a beautiful piece of music. Great control with his falsetto. I love it

  • LeftyHendrix93

Without amplification nor technological boost is the big difference between classical and popular music. There is nothing to 'cover' the singer's or performer's weaknesses. BTW that is not falsetto, but head voice of a countertenor, the modern day equivalent of a castrato.

  • Beautiful. Painfully so.

    Thanks for uploading, Gabba02.

  • I am absolutely stunned over the sheer magnitude and perfection of this piece. Time just stops!

  • zilaihuo, i attended his concert a few weeks ago and he doesn't need a microphone. The acoustics in the room are enough to carry the voice. He is simply stunning live - incredible that the human voice can accomplish such sound.

  • what an absolutely beautiful piece of music.

  • Where is the microphone? Did he really sing it? I'm just curious.

  • Yes he actually sang it, but it's a traditional style song, so there is no microphone use for the most part.

  • Perfection. Breathtakingly, hauntingly beautiful.

  • the lutes add so much to this, beautiful.

  • Glorious, sublime and soothing.

  • this is the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra ....

  • How did we come to create such art?

  • "We" didn't - Vivaldi did.

  • Well, I must admit that my tears just came out from nowhere. Some people call this 'relaxing' and I call some people 'incapable'.

  • Amazing!!

  • This is great, just to think how lucky we were to have discovered it in Dresdan, 2003 or so! Immense.

  • is this the movement of Nisi Dominus that appears on Yann Arthus-Bertrand's HOME?

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, this is Cum Dederit, performed by Sandrine Piau in HOME soundtrack.

  • Yes it is.

  • Is Scholl german last name?

  • yes, his first name is Andreas

  • In my opinion, andreas Scholl have most vocal abilities than Philippe Jaroussky

  • I think andreas got a more powerful voice and Philippe got a softer voice...both of them are good countertenor...it's hard to say who is better....

  • Voice of an angel. Truly beautiful.

  • does anybody have a score for this aria?

  • huh? pope bendedict is our master?

  • I've heard that sort before. Economics is apparently run by God and not by the obvious mistakes recorded in our history that can be referenced at pretty much any point. -_-

  • I didn't know Ratzinger was a falsetto...

  • lol good one

  • superb!

  • Good piece and it is nicely performed!!! but the splice of sound and video could be better.

  • Agree!!!

  • @ZitraStatnice practice?? :Pwhat do you mean with its wrong to practice?

  • @Ingeborg08 great reply

  • I am gay. So?

  • Zum Dahinschmelzen! Bravo!!!

  • SENTIMENTO

  • WONDERFUL! the best contra-tenor.

  • perfezione ti baciò la fronte Andreas,Vivaldi risplende attraverso la tua voce.

  • @arrosciuscallonau Beautiful : )

  • This is really exceptional. It is a hard piece to sing given the slower tempo and the long notes!

  • Just incredible, Scholl it's simply fantastic.

[I think I have not to say anithing about Vivaldi jajaja ;)]

  • This guy is a miracle, a dream, a gift to the world. He opens hearths and minds. Where does this sound come from ?

  • Was für eine schöne Stimme.

Vivaldis "Nisi Dominus" wunderbar weich Interpretiert.

    Bravo!!!

  • totally marvellous;-)

and I quite like him singing Bach, specially Agnus Dei the aria of Mass in B Minor, I know lots of singers(men, women and boys) tried this piece and in my opinion Andreas is one of the best!

  • hehehehe all my friends say im REALLY naughty and flirty. hehe *maybe* L

  • Oh, come on! Scholl lip-synching? Who're you trying to compare serious singers like him to?! Britney Spears?

  • Very nice singing! Andreas is such a great singer.

  • mentira

  • Q perezza de video

  • Scholl is the best countertenor I have ever heard! An excellent version of Nisi Dominus.

  • he is not lip syncing... the video and audio are just slightly out of sync... that sometimes happens when recording from other sources or videos go through any type of computer process.

  • oh you ignorant fool do you know nothing........

  • What nonsense!

  • Seems like my comment is out of context. This piece is wonderful, what is nonsense is the intentionally rude comment someone made about Andreas.

  • Poor ignorant...

  • The goal is to sing beautiful music, macho not required.

  • obviously not.....why he should sound "macho"? do you at least undrestand a little what he is singing??? do you have the slightest idea?????

go and listen heavy metal or any other "macho" singers

  • He is just talented!!!

  • Oh, was für große Kunst.-

  • Yes, 'Mezzodolce', this is definitely available on audio CD - I bought a copy of it online no more than a week ago. And indeed it is sublime! Many thanks to 'Gabba02' for sharing it!

  • Very nice. Early music made my job as symphony janitor bearable.

  • There's my lute teacher and there is a violin teacher from my uni!

  • Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this.

  • Does anyone know if this is a recording that is available, either video or even just audio?

  • love love love

He's the best actually I think (as contratenor). Yes Paolo, he touched a celestial note, he's "celestial" too in Vivaldi Stabat Mater ;-)

  • Heavenly! Thanks for the upload.

  • Incantavole.

    Enchanting.

Does anyone know what happens to Andreas' voice at 2:12-13? It seems to touch an celestial note.

  • I'm not an expert, but Andreas has continuously shown great patience with vibrato. Like at 3:19.

  • What a beautiful performance of this piece.

  • This performance is with the Austalian Brandeburg Orchestra directed from the keyboard by Paul Dyer at Angel Place in Sydney.

Scholl is on record as saying they are his favourite ensemble to work with. They have released a coupole of Vivaldi CDs together.

  • COME NON SI PUò AMARE VIVALDI CON QUESTO SE FINO A DIECI ANNI FA SONOANDATA AVANTI SOLO CON IPEZZI DIDATTICI ED ORA CONOSCO GRAZIE A QUESTO VIDEO CHE LE QUATTRO STAGIONI SONO SOLO UNA PICCOLA PARTE DEL GENIO DI vivaldi?

  • I really apreciate this execution. I love his voice .

    A formidable Contratenore

    Luli!

  • i just melt too...

  • buena ejecución,y unadulce voz

  • Are those mutes on the strings??? Very interesting.

  • how can you measure the beauty of a soul with notes and vocal compasses ? Do you not hear the sensitivity, the interpretation, the emotionality, the angelism of his voice ? That, for me, is what Scholl is all about :-)

  • Mennokie, don't be bothered. There are people who don't have any sensitivity and most certainly lack sensors to detect such elsewere. I am very sorry for Allangoo, who is probably a troll, anyway.

I've heard Scholl twice singing Nisi Dominus ( and countless other concerts), I am totally with you on what you said!

  • its a pity, people like you wont ever appreciate such an interpretation. besides, if u want to know (sth i doubt), for a voice like his, his low notes are wot they are!

    shame shame shame

  • i just melt ...

  • Beautiful! But I expect nothing less from Scholl. I prefer his earlier, less vibrato-y singing over the "rounder" tones of his later recordings. (But both styles are good, of course.) Thank you for uploading! One thing I noticed was the unusual violin/viola bows. Are they baroque-style bows?

  • stunning!!! I wish I had his breath control in this area of the voice. Beautiful.

  • Although Scholl is my favorite countertenor, another whom I admire is Paul Esswood. Scholl is somewhat conservative in his embellishments on da capo (repeats), whereas Esswood tastefully embellishes more as often was done in the Baroque era. Listen to his role of David in the Handel oratorio "Saul."

  • I have tow Esswood's CDs. Esswood's record "Giulio cesare" is very awful, that voice ....sorry i don't think he's on the same level of Andreas Scholl.

  • Why does he always do that bouncy thing before he sings? I noticed it for the first time in Wiesbaden this year. it's quite funny. Quirky.

  • shazzer, that's to generate energy trough the body to get more intense sound. it's quite common, I do it too

    Kind regards

  • You should hear him singing,"A Poor Wayfaring Stranger".It's enough to bring tears to your eyes!!!

  • I cried Blood.

  • Where can we see a video of a poor wayfaring stranger? i want to see it.

  • I heard it on CD,I can't find him singing it anywhere on U-Tube.

  • Die schönste Stimme der Welt!

  • Beautiful man, beautiful voice.... What more can you ask??? I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!

  • His rendition of Filiae Maestae Jerusalem, another Vivaldi piece with a similar sleepy tone as this piece in the video, is awful, especially the last recitative. But this recording...

  • excellent!!! brilliant!!! gorgeous!!! love it!!!!

  • I know that feeling- when he opens his mouth you fall in love!! I have seen him perform this in Amsterdam and it was just as magnificent as this. He truelly is a talented man. How lucky to be blessed with such a sound. Thanks for posting this.

  • Stunning! Both performance and music!

  • Quelle voix !

    J'en reviens pas.

    C'est tout simplement magnifique.
