Thank you for your comment. Their performance is absolutely great. I am glad that you encountered them here and hope you will go further into their wonderful world.
This performance was given in England, and a two-album set was recorded. I have the set, but my turntable is kaput. Thanks for letting me once again experience this magnificent ensemble.
Okay, now I have listened to about a dozen of these, and THIS is the best, albeit with the Alexandrov version at Albert Hall from 1963 coming in second by a nose! Thank you again and again!
DO watch "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" I actually managed to get a public school class to watch part of it. And I think they would likely have gone on to try to watch the whole thing too. But, to give credit where it is due, this full rendition IS absolutely beautiful! Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all there is to know, and all on earth ye NEED to know. (Keats)
I am fortunate enough to own several Russian Red Army Choir CDs and one that contains this song. I also have the film "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." The Red Army Choir was excellent with any material that they sung. James Dunn's version brought tears to your eyes because he was a drunk that had dreams but he just couldn't get a hold on life and make his dreams come true.
@DragonSporks The expression on Francie's face is absolutely precious. A beautiful scene in a wonderful film. Unfortunately, for some reason the film has not been released commercially in the U.S. yet. I'll probably break down and buy one of the Korean bootlegs if I don't see it soon.
To me this is the most beautiful rendition of the song. The soloist was outstanding. I believe this version was taken from the European Tour of the Choir back in the late 1950s or early 1960s. I have a CD of selections from this concert. How I wish there was a video of the original choir performing this number. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful rendition of a beautiful song.
I've listened to a lot of choirs in my time, and this is as good as it gets. Yevgeniy Belyaev's performance is outstanding and his breath control is something to be marvelled at ... than you so much for posting this.
This certainly brought back memories to me. The Choir used to tour and I went to see them when they came to perform at the Glasgow Empire Theatre (I believe theirs was the last show ever to perform at the Empire before it closed for good). They sang Annie Laurie just like on this video. You could have heard a pin drop and I'm sure a tear glistened in many an eye. I never forgot it and it is a joy to hear it again after all those years.
Thank you for your comments, which made me happy. Their songs are magnificent. Deap and loud some time, low and delicate some other time. In my opinion this can be something which can be done only by this male-voice choir, which was raised in the strict standards of the Russian Army. I was lucky that I could see them in their concert held in Portland, Oregon, USA in 1989, when I was assigned there from Japan for business.
I've listened to many great performances with many musicians from around the world on You Tube. This choral interpretation is as good as lyrical beauty of sound gets. The former Red Army Choir here gives special assurance to anyone who has felt that "Music is love".
