  • Don't cover his/her mouth. Then the mucus can't flow!!

  • My dog does that same thing :D !!!

  • You are an idiot! Why would you try to stop it from breathing. Someone should smother your face with a pillow when your short of breath!!

  • @timgrooveman Who's the idiot? Oh, right you. Dogs with smushed in faces do this all the time because of the way their muzzles are. What she's doing is massaging his throat to relax him, and covering his nose to force him to breath out of his mouth, therefore forcing him to use his fully open airway. If you don't do this, they can have a very hard time stopping themselves and it causes them a great deal of distress. Careful how you judge.

  • @timgrooveman Man you are naive, Look up REVERSE SNEEZE its very common and she is doing exactly what she should be doing. I really hate people like you. What are you anyways a terrorist? no wait just a guy who cant get it up. I bet you love to smother men and woman IE. your comments. Go see your docter and get some Viagra!

  • I think 567Colleen just need to get laid. Mellow out dude, yes, and I mean DUDE!!

  • This is NORMAL for Pugs & Puggles! It is due to 'Soft Palate Elongation' and happens in many brachycephalic breeds. The best thing to do is to calm your dog by talking to it and gently rubbing it's throat to induce swallowing. It's TEMPORARY and WILL STOP ON IT'S OWN.

  • ur dog is having a minor asthma attack please stop what ur doing ur hurting it even more and see a vet ASAP

  • @HandofJesus That's not true, I have a puggle and he does exact same thing. This is not an asthma attack, this is very common

  • @alexdotter It can be allergies depending on how common and how long. A friend of mine had one that constantly would do it only during the spring time and fall when pollen was common. Got him tested and sure enough allergic!

  • Thank you for the help I was looking for how to stop reverse sneezing and thankfully this video really helped a lot.Great video and great tutorial.

  • It's called a Collapsed Trachea. You can give your dog a very very small amount of honey or even just hold it butt above her head. You are actually NOT supposed to pinch the nose.

  • WOW YOUR NUMB U HAVE TO PINCH THE NOSE NOT FUCKING SUFFOCATE YOUR DAMN DOG IDIOT AND STOP FUKIN HOLDING HIM DOWN

  • @567colleen she's actually not doing it wrong, she is pinching the nose - and the dog is being lightly, but firmly, supported and held. if you've ever witnessed these attacks, they can be quite "violent". the dog is fine, this owner clearly cares about her puggle!

  • @567colleen c'mon there aint no need to be so mean, she's clearly trying to help her dog so please do not call her an idiot. Not everyone knows everything about dogs. I mean, my dog has fits and at first i was completely cluess as to how to handle it, but now after 5 fits i know what to do, and im only 13. so please there aint no need to capitalise your writing and no need for swearing.

  • WOW YOUR NUMB U HAVE TO PINCH THE NOSE NOT FUCKING SUFFOCATE YOUR DAMN DOG IDIOT

  • This happens when my pugs catch a cold.

  • My puggle does this all the time. I have never covered his nose or massaged him. It stops in just a moment though.

  • i just adopted a puggle. named her sasquatch but i call her sass for short

she did that last night i just massaged her throat a little and it helped ive done that with my pug and my sisters beagle it helped them to

  • your pushing his nose a little too hard. just lightly push on the bottom of their lip and it should stop. do not cover their noses

  • Cuddling him is pointless. I just pinch his nose and it's over in 2 seconds. Then we move on with our days like it didn't happen.

  • this is caused by allergies or something like that

its just some kind of cough and putting your hand over the nose is harmful/annoying to the dog. He will stop after a few minutes, this "reverse sneeze" isint harmful to the dog at all.

  • Its not sneezing hes thrying to catch breathe bacause he has a pushed in nose from the pug part...........

  • awwe, my puggle does the same

  • @tronvex if she gets real bad try putting water in a dropper to help her get some water down, it doesnt further choke her, it helps whenever mine does the snorting thing. I know what u are talking about when u say u wake up to hearing the snorting. It scared me when it happened at night too

  • oh my gosh, my puggle did this a lot a while back, scared the crap out of me because she would do that, and then she would do this thing where she would sound like she was gulping for air... thank goodness though she hasnt done it in a while

  • My pug just recently started doing this. It was scary waking up to the sound of a pug snorting like that. Thanks for the video

  • Comment removed

  • My pup did that yesterday. I knew it was reverse sneezing but I wasn't sure, I thought it might be heartworms, Pretty scary when you're ignorant about dogs.

  • Comment removed

  • @sharkbyte420 Hey, I didn't get that post even though you you posted the same comment 4 times. Could you just write it one more time, think i'll get it then, thanks.

  • why do people freak out when she covers the nose for 5 seconds.

The dog has a nose and a mouth to breath through..

    f-ing morons..

  • my dog usually does that only when im angry at him and he gets upset. what i do is i talk calmly to him and pet him gently and open his mouth . It works everytime for me.

  • thats mean to cover up there nose dont do that MEANIE

  • @msanimalexpert i think that they're supposed to cover the dogs nose

  • oh non of those dogs where related eather.FYI.

  • i looked it up lots things cause it and yes the Vicks works. Can instantly stop it.I had 15 dogs over a 30 year span had it.They have quite good sights to read. Some have a lot info.

  • 30 years exsperance it works.Oh do you have a flue shot for your dog?

  • @7466309change exsperance?

  • They have a dog flue vacen. They also reverse sneez for that.Inoculations.But if not then nasal spray works.Vicks.

  • @7466309change what the heck is a vacen??

  • make sence to you now?????

  • Thank you for posting this; my puggle started doing this and the vet actually told me about this video!

  • thanks for the video.. my dog started going this a week ago and scared the living crap out of me.. very relieved to see it is more common than i thought

  • nasil spray stops it.Our dogs do that we used a vicks nasal spray and after several differnt epposodes they stoped altogeather.

  • The dog is reverse sneezing, so why cover his nose so he can't breathe through it? he is already struggling why make it even harder. Dogs overcome this by themselves. I don't understand please explain? Maybe something I'm missing.

  • @madlam83 no your not missing a thing but they are.

  • @7466309change that makes absolutely no sense!

  • @madlam83 What you mean?Did you read what you wrote? You say maybe you missing somethig. My answer is no you not. But the one with dog is.Why that make no sence to you???Shure does to me.I have 5 dogs that one bring this sneeze home. All other got it.Next bunch dogs 5 got it frome that one too.Nasal spray from Vicks worked.Maybe a virus.Altho some times a dog sniffed in a foreign object too far in.Peice grass or fuzz off rug.Nasal Spray can dislodge it.

  • @7466309change I don't think you understand. You need to look up "reverse sneezing", perhaps your dog does not have this but if he did giving it Vicks would not be a remedy.

  • @madlam83 Reversed sneezing can be caused by allergies, mites, excitement, or something irritating it's throat. It's a recommended technique by Veterinarians to plug the nose or rub it's throat. You are supposed to do it because it usually will cause the dog to swallow and clear whatever is irritating it's throat. It's not mean at all. It actually helps a lot. My Min Pin does it all the time.

  • when my puggle started doing this reverse sneezing i did this to him. and he did not fight me at all he actually looked relieved. and when it was done he looked straight at me and like settled right next to me with his belly up as if saying thank you.

  • Why can't you let them sneeze..? Just Wondering please answer.

  • @ChineseKittyLove They whern't sneezing he was like gasping for air kinda and his nose got stuffed so she put her hand to tell him to use his mouth... p.s. i have a pug which is REALLY worse than pugles.......

  • @MarineSniper281 Oohh. You see I'm like 13 so I don't really know Thank You !

  • @ChineseKittyLove well he could hit his nose and bloody it doing that reverse sneeze. This was why we got nasal spray for ours.I do think too it is a virus contageouse.Cause of our 10 dogs one brought it home rest got it .

  • @intergalacticdreamz im not sorry about this one though

  • @intergalacticdreamz and this one

  • @intergalacticdreamz i heard you dont like getting youtube notifications... oh crap, sorry about this one

  • @feefernutter your soooo funny,.

  • omg my spanial does the same cept slower my mom tinks its nothing cause she gets it after running do dogs get azma?

  • omg my puggle does the same thing everyday!!!

  • i have never heard of reverse sneezing before....

  • I'm so glad you posted this. My puggle does this and I was very worried. Thank you!

  • What are you trying to do holding yours dog's nose??

  • @collegetaxi21 Trying to make the reverse sneezing stop? Is that wrong?

  • @collegetaxi21 Even if Preston doesn't like his nose being plugged, it still helps him to stop reverse sneezing! That's a good enough reason for the owner to hold his nose and make him breathe through his mouth. She knows what she's doing, like many people said.

  • Actually holding the nose helps the dog because it forced them to breathe through the mouth, quite effective!

  • my dog does that...my sis freaks out

  • this is BS!! I hate how youtube allows people who are trying to kill their dog by suffocating them to post such animal cruelty.

dont worry guys, i have already taken the initiative and reported lil miss jhsing to the P.E.T.A.!!

  • @intergalacticdreamz She is not trying to kill the dog. The dog is having a nasophargyneal spasm, or reverse sneeze. It's none life-threatening and usually only lasts around 30 seconds. A method to stop it is to massage the throat (which she does) or hold the dogs nose to force the dog to breath through its mouth.

  • @intergalacticdreamz PETA? Really? That cult? Besides, they only go after animals that get the spotlight. Look at Fuzzy the cat. His owner ate him and PETA did absolutely NOTHING about the situation

  • @intergalacticdreamz You reported her to PETA over how she handles a reverse sneeze? Really? Don't you think that's over-reacting a little? My Jackabee (Beagle/Jack Russel mix) reverse sneezes too, and when I rub her throat and put my hand over her nose, it helps the episode stop. There's no abuse going on. Preston looks very healthy and happy.

  • @intergalacticdreamz They'll ignore you and laugh at your face, and if they don't, we'll be sure to do so. I bet you like all the attention you're getting from this comment.

  • @intergalacticdreamz You are ignorant.

  • @sweetphenom6642

ok this is the last straw..i have been receiving nothing but ridicule from you guys..what is this some sort of sick cult or something?! well your tricks arent going to deter me from reporting your usernames as accomplises as well. As an update, I have spoken to the representative at PETA and they say there is really nothing they could do about it..that is until I demanded I speak to the manager which I have a scheduled telephone conference with this wednesday..keep u posted

  • @intergalacticdreamz

    i ran out of characters...

ps - u all make me sick!

  • @intergalacticdreamz Go ahead and report us, we are no accomplices, we did nothing wrong at all! You're just being stupid, and youtube can see through that.

  • @intergalacticdreamz You have been receiving ridicule because you are ignorant.

  • My puggle Captain does the same thing. Keeping them calm like she is doing is great and helpful!

  • my king charles does the same thing and quite violently, if he gets too excited or tired, putting your hand over his mouth is the RIGHT thing to do, its stops immediately. Caused by the cleft pallate. My vet (also my husband!) is in agreement it's the right thing to do.

  • aww my puggle hates it when you squeeze his nose

  • Preston RULZ! We just got an 8 week old female Puggle named Penelope. Its like she could be Preston's Mini me. I cant wait to see what she does next. I think that was a very interesting tip on the reverse sneezing. i may need to use that at some point.

  • My puggle does the same thing we do the same thing you do its perfectly fine for the dog.A pugple is mixed with a pug and beagle they have breathing problems like this.GREAT VIDEOS!

  • I learned this too, and it helps my little Matlese. It's so terrifying, and holding his nose gently helped him stop right away. Thank goodness for this tip!

  • My friend's Pug does it for a 10, 15 seconds then stops, it doesn't bother him any either.

I see dogs do the same for short periods, 5 to 7 snorts and it's over. All sizes of dogs, from Bichon Frises to German Shepherds... I can't help but think it's the humans making it into a bigger thing than it is.

Oh and covering their nostrils isn't abuse. What... They can't breathe through their mouths? I'll bet those people never had to take care of any animals.

  • if you pat just below the neck softly it stop the wheezing

  • can u tell me what his problem is? is that a problem of the breed?

  • @yokophoenix Some people call this an athsma attack for dogs. It isn't exactly rare but not all dogs have it. And no, it is not limited by breed. I have had two dogs, a pekingese and a dachsund that have both had this problem. So it isnt because of short or long snouts either. That's pretty much all that I know about it myself. But other than that, you could pretty much google it and find out more. Just telling you what I can. Hope this helps :)

  • My puggle does that too!

  • my jack russell has always done this.

I talk to her gently, stroke her chest and cover both nostrils with one finger, thus causing her to swollow. this works everytime for my dog.

For all the people that have posted, saying that putting your hand over a dogs nostrils is abuse, let me ask you what you would do? would you sit back and watch your dog go through this or do something to help and stop it as quickly as you can?

thanks for posting these videos, it helped the vet dignose the problem

  • Three of my doxies also do that, and one of them really has bad episodes. I didn't know what it was , so I videotaped it to show the vet, they told me about reverse sneezing. I am so relieved that it's nothing to be worried about, and I am glad that I can help my baby when she has one! Thnks for posting this video!

  • It's common in every dog that is a beagle or has beagle in them. My 9 year old Warfield Red does this all the time

  • @scaryred24 You are clearly an idiot, that dog has a higher I.Q than you for (1) and (2) my dog does that to and that and rubbing his throat calms him down.

  • @scaryred24 You must b a little retardet and you clearley dont know anything about dogs.

This is the correct way to stop reverse sneezing. So stop commenting on thing you dont have any knowledge on.

  • @scaryred24 LOL that is where they breathe from? best quote ever, go die in a fire retard

  • @scaryred24 Reversed sneezing can be caused by allergies, mites, excitement, or something irritating it's throat. It's a recommended technique by Veterinarians to plug the nose or rub it's throat. You are supposed to do it because it usually will cause the dog to swallow and clear whatever is irritating it's throat. It's not mean at all. It actually helps a lot. My Min Pin does it all the time.

  • My puggle does that too. It's doesn't seem to hurt her, I just rub her throat and she stops.

  • it looks like she shouldn't do that

  • My dog does that.. should we be really concearned?

  • My dog does this...sadly it's so bad I actually have to slightly tighten my hands around her throught to get her to slow down....:(

  • my puggle does that all the time

  • thats what helps but mine hoover he hates it when you do it even though he gives ya kisses when he can breathe

  • My dog has it too.. Is there a cure? Any severe long lasting damage to the dog?

  • he is a big boy. but sooooo cute bye.

  • my puggle do that to but i feel so sad because she died yesterday got hit by a car=(

  • @largosmom010 hey! Its a puggle! and they can cover their nose.... she didnt ever cover cover it.... she didnt like squish her hand into him face.... she was helping him.... and yes they do have breathing.... so i understand why you said it.... but ya.... I have a puggle too!

  • plz hlp my pug rat terrier like coughs or weezes then tries to spit something out the swallows it back can someone plz hlp me

  • my puggle lucy does that but she like runs everywhere while doing it its so funny

  • @Lucytoys mine to and her name is lucy too lol:)

  • My dog does this too.. its nothing serious its just when they get a fuzzy stuck up there nose!!

  • I swear that your puggle is my puggles twin. =) And I hate when he does this...i feel so bad for him.

  • i have a puggle aswell and that means that they can't breath, so rubbing the throat and or slowly messaging their neck, will help.

  • You're hot.

  • my puggle does the reverse sneeze. I was watching some show on animal planet and the pug on there was doing it. The woman said to rub their nose. it works all the time and Very quickly! it can be a scary noise to hear sometimes.

  • Thats not Snezzing!! he's Choking

  • @wolfquest76 no its sneezing most dogs do this

  • @wolfquest76 Wow your an idiot.

  • My puggle does that and the vet recommended massaging the throat. That never seemed to work on Dylan. So now when she starts reverse-sneezing, I cover her nostrils until she swallows, then she's fine. Had to discover that technique on my own

  • dose holding the puggle nose work?

  • My puggle does the same thing only a lot louder

  • When my dog does this she gags a little , like she's swallowing some flem.

I believe the dogs are pulling stuff out of the sinus cavities. I'm not saying your being cruel by covering the nose , and I could be wrong but I think you should let your dog clear his sinus even though it's distressing to see and hear.

  • I don't believe there is any right or wrong about what she is doing with Preston. As it just is and she is choosing this way to help her dog. That's all. No need for judgement as we are all free to decide what works for us and our pets. As long as she is doing it for the well being of her dog and it does not hurt him, than so be it.

  • thanks so much for sharing this video . This is exactly what my Beagle is doing and we were wondering what it was.

  • LOL possesed dog

  • My puggle does the same thing. It usually passes and he is fine!

  • yea dont cover there nose or mouth... all puggles do that somtimes.... just let them do there thing... yes its annoying but its only for like 30 sec.

  • @sonyboom covering the nose to force them to breathe through their mouth is a commonly accepted method to try and shorten the episode. My pug is prone to the occasional reverse sneezing fit too - she jerks her head away if you try to hold her nose so we tend to massage her throat and force her to swallow a few times. That usually does the trick.

  • @rockxwl yea we do the throte thing now...

  • My beagle started doing this at age 6. Sometimes she wakes up out of a dead sleep, stands up and does her thing, and goes right back to sleep.

That puggle is one of the cutest dogs I've ever seen. What an adorable combination of breeds. It should be its own breed!

  • My puggle does this too. I thought he had a throat infection.

  • don't cover his mouth or his nose, reverse sneezing is to clear his sinuses. It is normal per our vet.

  • My Jack Russell Terrier/Pug does that exact same thing. It's sad to watch. I never got it on tape cuz she seems to do it in the middle of the night!!

  • my pugmaranian ( pug pomaranian mix) always does this ussaly after she wakes up

  • "You are supposed to put your hand over the mouth and nose for a few seconds and it will stop."

Wow! I didn't realize. I've always picked up my puggle and hugged and petted him until the episode passed.

I guess it sort of serves the same function, yes?

  • I have a beagle(pure breed) and it has this exact same problem. Go to pet smart or whatever dog shop and she starts doing this and people look at me like I'm choking the dog.. I do believe it is a nervous habit and can not be treated.. The best thing to do is just calm them down as you are doing here. Looks like someone else found the answer too

  • it's a reverse sneeze, you should keep the MOUTH closed and blow a little puff into the nose, that's what my teacher who is a vet told me...cause my min pin does it too the epiglottis gets stuck , it usually happens in small toy breeds or brachycephalic breeds (smashed in noses) like your dog

  • my dog over ate and all of a sudden started doing this

  • My dog ( a lab/ retriever mix we believe) does the same thing... although it seems as if she is gasping for air. We find that she does it most when she gets excited, or gets up too fast. She tends to only do it in the winter season though. I noticed that you were covering your dogs' nose trying to get it to breathe through its mouth. Does that seem to help them? Thank you for posting!

  • i didn't know what that was until my husbands cousin told me she works at a vet office. i was worried but she said not to worry, but he hasn't done it since.

  • Me too, I thought my puppy was dying. CRAZY sound!!!

  • This is commen in many dogs and is more commen in certain breeds. Both the begal and pug are prone to the reverse sneeze. I show and groom dogs and I see this all the time. You are supposed to put your hand over the mouth and nose for a few seconds and it will stop. Also cough syrup works best. There is nothing to worry about. Some dogs will do it because they know they will get your attention. They're smarter then we give them credit for ;)

  • My dog has always done that and I have never been concerned. But she is getting older and has been doing it multiple times a day. She is 8 and a lab...I'm really worried, does anyone know if there are any conditions that cause this that could be harmful? I'm terrified for my best friend.

  • your suppose to put your hand on its nose. So it can breath through its mouth and stop it.

  • She knows what she's doing. I don't think she'd place her hand over his face if she thought it'd hurt him. It's only helping him. So back off.

  • @BandieeBritt dude she's throwing some kind of spell

  • LKCMasterfilms - massaging the throat (which she also does) and plugging the nostrils to force the dog to breathe through the mouth is what vets recommend when a dog is reverse-sneezing.... notice that it it stopped shortly after each time. It's not like she was beating it over the head with a brick or something.

  • your suppose to do that -_-

  • It's caused by an irritation of the soft palate. It is not serious, but massaging the dog's throat, or covering the nose to force the dog to breathe through it's mouth can stop the event, called "reverse sneezing' (but not actually a sneeze at all.)

  • isn't putting your hand on his nose worse?

    or does it help?

  • Try switching to a harnest..i swear it'll make a huge difference and/or make it go away completely. It worked for my beagle.

  • oh I always thought it was an asthma attack!

  • cool! i'll try that on my beagle the next time! thanks for the tip! :D

  • My beagle has done this daily for years. I remember how terrified I was the first time it ever happened! It sounds horrible, I thought something was seriously wrong with him!

  • hahaha thts funni

but sad really sad. can a dog die frm tht??

  • No..... that's just like asking can a dog die from sneezing. No.

  • actually Mamaasof07 and Msginabedabaddest you are suppose to hold there nose to help them breath through there mouth because they are sneezing and to stop the noise and to help them you have to put your hand or fingers on there nose think b4 yew speak:P

  • umm yeah u cant hold his nose when that happens!!!

  • Um... that's what your supposed to do. Look it up. It causes the dog to swallow, which could make him swallow whatevers blocking the passage in his throat.

  • Comment removed

  • u cant be holdin his nose

  • WTF is a reverse sneeze exactly?

  • My toy poodle had about three episodes a couple of days ago. We took her to the vet today and were told it is reverse sneezing. I was so relieved. She looked scared to death while it was happening. She is better now. Rubbing her throat help and the vet recommended giving her children's benadryl. I will try the nose thing too if/when it happens again.

  • oh man this just happened to our dog lastnight at 4:00am and it was so long that we ran to the vet and it was freaking closed!!! anyway im glad other ppl share so we can learn! Thanks!

  • when this happens, don't close his nose.Pick him up so his body will be strait up.

  • Uh the dog can stil breathe. It's not cruel in any way.

  • think of how it must feel to not be able to pick your nose

  • that dog has what we call in sweden "nose mites" and it's a treatable condition

  • No, it is a reverse sneeze. Not nose mites.

  • Just shove ur finger in its mouth, and they'll stop IMMEDIATELY.. My mom does that to my pug and puggle, (But gently) Just ask your local veterinarian

  • My poodle does that, we thought it was like an azma attack. Do poodles do that? I thought only boston terriors and pugs do.

  • Toy breeds and squish-face breeds get it pretty commonly.

  • My beagle does they same thing, im glad its not something really bad. thanks!!
